  • I remember this video being played all the time on tv back in 1981. I was 10 and liked the song and still do. Also was upset the day i heard Lennon had died. I was a big fan of the Beatles.

  • I was shivering inside......I was shivering inside......

  • make that 32!

  • Hard to say as beatle and lennon fan but this version is better!1

  • One of the best cover's ever (dare I say better than the original) but not as good as "This Mortal Coil's" version of Tim Buckley's "Song Of The Siren", both of which are pure stunning.

  • @TheRockingtam Couldn't agree more. Lennon's original was very mediocre but Ferry has transformed it into a gem. Isn't it ironic, considering Roxy's terrific originality and innovation, that this was the only song they ever released, either single or album track, that wasn't written by Ferry or other band members - and their only no.1 hit! You're dead right about "Song to the Siren" too.a fabulous version by Liz and Robin. I bought the vinyl album with this on in the early 80's and would never sell.

  • ferry is gurning :0

  • 31 people are just jealous guys.

  • This song delights me...

  • Sax in the front, party in the back!

  • 3:51 : keyborgasm

  • Brian Ferry's and Roxy musics tribute to John Lennon and they made it there own, loved Roxy music

  • so FUCKING GREAT NO MATTER WHO SINGS THE SONG,JUST AWESOME.

  • stop doin' that, this is john lennon's song...

  • im looking for a live version then vevo pops up like an old granny pissing on my shoes....fuck you vevo you money grabbing bastards........

  • Georgous song.

  • pure class , tribute to john lennon.

  • Bryan is not a yupppie, he was true class from the start. Such a beautiful man, Roxy Music 4ever. My teenage dream guy. I love these fine british guys. I don't do carbons in life but I always am drawn to guys that look like or speak with the lovely accents. Often they turn out to be an egotistical arsehole, but I've been called worse, of course I never to my knowledge met this man so I can't say. I have seen him on stage. He was pure intensity with Roxy Music.

  • Not all of us in the 80's were yuppies! Some of us had real jobs........ Anyway, without a doubt the 80's produced probaby the best music and artists the world is ever likely to see and hear! And I for one, will still be listening to the 'Beastie Boys' in another 20 or 30 years, probably getting complaints from the kids down the street saying 'Oi, Gramps you gonna turn that music down or what??? 'I've got day care in the morning.........' :) - Grown old is compulsory - growing up isn't!!!!!

  • @ThreeDeeRider with u there my brother !! think of all the other great music in the 80s the mighty clash / new order /pscedelic furs the list goes on !! thank god i was there in the day ! give me the 80s anytime !! not like the shit today !!! wear a baseball cap and your jeans round your ass you get a record deal !! fucking sad !! give me my tunes any day even though my boy thinks im a old bastard !! i probably am !! but it was better in our day bro !!

  • He sounds like David Bowie on this song

  • Yuppie generation.... But is a beauty song...

  • @8188ify

John Lennon was not a Yuppie......

    Wrote this song.

  • @voderick Brian Ferry is a yuppie...

  • @8188ify You need to catch up idiot. Ferry did the hard yards with Roxy music and made some of the most amazing music in the seventies. Okay his solo stuff mainly stank but it still doesn't make him a poseur.

  • @8188ify It's Bryan not Brian you idiot.

  • @voderick Let's see singing "Imagine no possessions" when he was a billionaire, no that doesn't make him a yuppie at all. A hypocrite maybe?

  • Is he drunk?

  • @Lindachica513

    No just cool :)

  • A beautiful tribute cover to the memory of John Lennon. Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music ruled the 80's!!

  • OK... I play this song after breaking up with my girl...I was a teenager.. don't ask me names now.. BUT This was a very nice depro song.. still Love it.. reminds me of my teen years and the 80"s.. was great !!!!!!

  • the best cover of the song of john lennon, insuperable

  • semplicemente bellissima......

  • Comment removed

  • wow, that little prophet solo at the end is really good

  • super!!!!!N ++++++ super!!!!!!!

  • I remember when this came out after John Lennon died. Amazing then and still now. Some things are just right and this version of this song is one of them.

  • Emotional !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! timeless

  • good song xxxxxxx

  • Only Bryan Ferry is cool enough to combine a baby blue suit with a pink tie AND white shoe's

  • @duvel60 Or even SHOES. Jesus how do idiots get out of primary school when they don't even know how to use an apostrophe???? FFS!

  • @zapkvr You got a point xD VERY stupid mistake indeed xD! But english isn't my first language.

  • @zapkvr - You my friend are a nob. That is all.

  • @stofstg I'm NOT your friend. Oh and I am not a KNOB.

  • @duvel60 lol ... i carried off that look to great success in the eighties to ;)

  • @segafantasia Then you can consider yourself as cool as Bryan Ferry :D.

  • AND white socks AND blues eyes !

  • @duvel60 True

  • this clip was made in sydney... my dad did the lighting

  • @MrRickSpence Cool

  • brian is god. end of!

  • pure class x

  • John Lennon is better.

  • @ramboinside If I had to chose either or, it would be lennon everytime, but this works well. Ferry's laaaazy long phrasing gives it a different perspective. He is, after all, very cool. ;)

  • Wat een zanger die Bryan Ferry en wat een nummer, prachtig.

  • Brill

  • I guess Bryan Ferry is fully underrated as vocalist. It´s a shame.

  • Did this come out in 1981? I remember when John Lennon passed very well. I was 10 yrs old. I loved the Beatles at that age in 1980. The day i heard about it,i went to school feeling depressed. Can you believe it,depressed at that age. I felt really down in the dumps for days, weeks. Of course Lennon had 3 singles released that year after his death as a tribute. Then 1981 this was released. I remember this was played over and over on tv. I loved it then, and still love it now. x

  • is that steve cougan

  • I'll rally to the cry "THIS IS GENIUS!"

  • Man, Cardiff city, December 2010, 01:00, there's snow in my shoes as I walk home from a late night in the library...and that sax solo fills me with absolute heartbreak, but it got me home.

  • @surfguy87 That Alto Is My Favorite part!!! it Reminds Me of My Boyfriend<3 hes An Alto sax player<3

  • I OFFICIALLY DECLARE THIS GENIUS!!!!!

  • video is just lol, song fucking rules

  • Gosh, it's so awesome **

  • I LOVE HIMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

  • bloody hell listening to this makes me realise what great music they made during the 80s

  • @ste123456754 to right ste better by far than most of the computer generated tosh we have had since the 90s with the od exception of course.

  • Happy ♥

  • il pedalino bianco no eh...

  • Absolute crap, leave it to Lennon.

  • sorry John but ive always prefered this version.

  • 28 people are beyond jealous guys.

  • I'm a big fan of Bryan Ferry... all I can say is he should not have sung the song.

  • @paradisewildchild Why coz it owns Lennon's version?

  • @cobrakai84 Unfortunately, he's not done a good job. The joie de vivre, that certain character, the indelible twinkle is missing.

  • I think it is somewhat comparable to the original.

  • I think it is somewhat comparable to the original.

  • this song has the best guitar & sax solo ever :)

  • God bless Bryan Ferry, lip-syncing wasn't really his forte.

  • A total classic. He re-defined "cool". Brings back memories.

  • @Fenner1976 aaaaa,memories

    you are a damn right,sir

  • @Fenner1976 i was born on 1986 and still love 80s music till the day i die

  • I still like this version of Lennon ( I found his one bland!)

  • This is absolute garbage compared to the original.

  • @epicishness

Rubbish. Lennon, vocally is possibly the most overrated musician of all time. Good song writer, yes. Ferry has him covered easily in every range... the music Roxy music matched to this song is just masterful.

  • @54FLEX45

Lennon's vocals are raw and powerful. It's the imperfections in it that make it so profound and so emotional. Paul McCartney was the better singer, yes, but John's raw vocal performances can't be reproduced. Especially not by whoever is singing in this video...It just sounds terrible. I also happen to prefer John's arrangement for this song. I hear your argument, but I disagree almost completely.

  • @54FLEX45

Perhaps what is lacking most from this cover is the emotion that is present in the original. John poured his emotions into his post-Beatles music. Whether you prefer the original or this cover, you can't deny that the emotion of the songwriter cannot be reproduced. Here it is not reproduced convincingly. After all, Lennon was writing about his own life. Bryan Ferry is not John Lennon.

  • @epicishness Emotion is a personal experience. I feel no emotion from Lennon's recording, just harsh, poorly performed vocals. I'm more so a fan of music, not the emotion behind the memory of a dead musician who left us too early. From a technical perspective, Ferry is the better performer... and Roxy music were just all sublime musicians. Most agree that Lennon is one of the most overrated musicians of all time, do the research for yourself.

  • @54FLEX45

I have done the research, my good sir. And although he may receive a bit too much praise than is due him because of his young death, he is certainly one of the greatest musicians of all time.

  • @epicishness I disagree, do you never listen to a song and feel like they are talking about you or your life? Do you never feel like someone has just ripped your insides out and poured them into a song? You because you dont write a song doesnt mean you cant absolutely relate to the lyrics and even feel the same emotions entirely. If your song doesnt conjour those emotions in at least one person then you have failed as a songwriter. I see this as a homage to lennon - and its a fantastic one

  • @deceptikat

Touche. You present a good argument. However, I still maintain my original statement that this homage to John Lennon does not surpass the original in any aspect.

  • @epicishness and you are entirely entitled to that opinion :)

  • Comment removed

  • @takaashi1 Haha, calm down there big guy. I just enjoy an educated discussion every now and then.

  • @epicishness ok man, i may have been a little rude, sry about that xD

  • @takaashi1 Haha, not a problem.

  • I don't understand how anyone could say this is better than the original. I don't think this even comes close and comparisons are therefore pretty ridiculous. It's like saying Fiona Apple's version of Across the Universe tops the original. To each his own, I guess.

  • He does a great version of this song. a really good one. but well Lennon i think did it better

  • A good example how a great song can be spoiled.

  • Love the intro

  • it's very rare that a cover is better than the original, and it's john lennon a legend but roxy music is better. Fair play to brian ferry. Although he does look like he's trying to push one out on occasions.

  • @itsawinnerfereal bullshit Why people think it's better than original? I don't doubt that this is the best cover, but Lennon can NEVER be copied...

  • @Daniel0889 Its all down to personal preference, i dont even like John Lennon version.

  • @RiFFxxx You are maybe I got a different taste, but I think this version barely brings out emotions from a person, when the original version is like an ode to love and forgiveness

  • @itsawinnerfereal Class comment mate I always thought that too! :)

  • @itsawinnerfereal this cover sounds to much like Elvis Presley... sorry, this reaction is even objective as yours.

  • @itsawinnerfereal 100% agree !!!

  • @itsawinnerfereal

Looks like a chihuahua is trying to bite a hemorrhoid of him.

  • @mrhenryleopard What? Bryan Ferry Rules....he still cranks out the hits well into his 60's!!!

  • @simonspitfire16

I agree with that. I just feel like he's got an angry toy dog chewing on and hanging from one of his bumgrapes.

  • better, than the original one

  • Amazing!

  • Those teeth look a bit sharp! Seriously, this song is just lovely, so slinky.

  • Simply beautiful...

  • Lennon neva made it 2 heaven, non believers will not inherit "GOD'S" Kingdom sorry 2 say..........???/

  • lennons got nothing on ferry's version

  • makes me think of John Lennon........

  • i had a dream about this song the other night, i definately prefer this to the original lol

  • "The names Bryan, Bryan Ferry!"

  • i love this song christ sake, that mini solo followed by the sax is just priceless

  • The whistling and instrumental at the end is just brilliant, absolutely brilliant!

  • i love Bryan Ferry's version and i am an absolute Lennon fan. Music is music

  • Not sure if, from the comments below, people hadn't realised that Brain Ferry didn’t this song as a tribute to John Lennon, when he died. So to compare it makes no sense…or if you like nonsense.

  • Hard to believe this is 30 years ago? It seems like yesterday.

  • why do people come here to compare and give out about ferrys version!! if you want lennons version go to it........

  • I can understand if anyone prefers John Lennon's original version to this, but you can't say that this was a bad cover. Bryan Ferry did this as tribute and I personally feel that he did a great job, and I'm pretty sure Lennon would have said the same.

  • John byłby pod wrażeniem...

  • much better than lennon

  • THis wont load because of the shitty add linked before it. Thanks assholes.

  • A remake truly worth listening to!!!!

  • Thumbs down. This guy's voice is annoying imo. Lennon's version was, is and will always be the best one.

Not meaning to start a flamewar.

  • @Neechyou Have to agree with Neechyou, Everyone has their opinion of course, but in MHO, this does NOT do justice to Lennon, or his song Jealous Guy nor his previous song Child of Nature from which the melody was derived. As far as the performance, I thought the Guitar solo was nice, good job on that, and that is about where my positive reinforcement ends. if you don't like criticism, go ahead and stop reading now. The post following this one will be my reasons for disliking it.

  • ok, so on to the reasons I was not impressed, and this Is just my opinion.

    but in MHO,

Not sure what to think of the Mullet-haired Football player on the Sax, didn't quite nail it sorry.

The synthesizer had no business in there at all. The voice isn't bad, but the Twitchy guy singing had no feel /understanding of the song and did not convey the heart and soul into it that it deserves.

It was like watching an average Elvis impersonator sing Lennon, while having an epileptic fit to the camera.

  • @SirLordMortimer My friend the twitchy guy singing is one of the greatest singers of the 20th century! Of course your entitled to your opinion and I respect that, but to say that he has no feel/understanding of the song, well to me that says you have no idea who Bryan Ferry is, he has based his entire career on conveying the feeling of every single lyric he ever sang! I admit that he does look a little irksome while he sings but that's his style! He's always been like that!

  • Which is better, well it's apple & oranges, both taste amazing and different from each other. I love both.

  • This does make justice to John! Beautiful version! It comes from the heart.

  • Love this version!!

  • This is way better than the original song

  • @Nk366 No, it is absolutely not better than the original

  • @Tristansletter He is good, but not better:)

  • Wow, this song is melancholic, John made this song to Paul McCartney, what a beautiful couple!

  • thankyou very much "twin40worty" every time I hear this version I'll say to my pal's "This is better than the original" & end up on the thick ear side of a tongue bashing from my cohort's, but I'm RIGHT, about this anyway. CHEER'S.

  • @TheRockingtam then play both to your friends. you cant knock john lennon. but in this case bryan ferry does it better

  • No one can sing as good as lennon could sing his own songs he meant it ! , accept it.

  • this reminds me of 'look who's talking 2' haha, this is one of my favorite songs even though i'm only 15, i love it <3

  • @BeautyDork101 me too

  • brill.. prefer this version.
