I was just on this train. But top speed is 313 km/hr...not miles. BIG difference! It was built to go much faster but had 2 terrible collisions with undisclosed casualties so they slowed it down to this speed. But yes the 819 mile ride from Beijing to Shanghai was just about 5 hours. And that includes about a dozen stops on the way...in cities with populations larger than LA that you have never even heard of!

A highspeed line, in any country, will not only release the pressure over other means of transportation, but creat new possibilities for people by making the act of moving between cities easier and faster. Well, you say Japan has developed by Shinkansen connecting each city tightly, don't you? I agree with you in a half. The first Tokaido Shinkansen was built between Tokyo and Osaka, and both cities have developed. After that, Sanyo (Osaka-Hakata) and something like that to connect other rural areas were opened. But those rural areas have not changed so much.

I was just on this train. But top speed is 313 km/hr...not miles. BIG difference! It was built to go much faster but had 2 terrible collisions with undisclosed casualties so they slowed it down to this speed. But yes the 819 mile ride from Beijing to Shanghai was just about 5 hours. And that includes about a dozen stops on the way...in cities with populations larger than LA that you have never even heard of!

I think railway should be used for reducing environmental load instead of only aiming speed.
Nowadays, cities have grown so big, and doughnut phenomenon has occurred. People commute to work long distance by cars, and the cars run at low speed in the city. Fuel consumption has been highly, so the environmental destruction goes worse, and life cost is up.
Change to compact cities, and use train instead of cars.

I think the advantage of high speed train is less energy consumption than car and airplane. It means good for environmental load.
But I have also a question. Shinkansen runs between Tokyo and Osaka sooooo many times. So Tokyo man comes to Osaka to work here, and Osaka man goes to Tokyo to work there. I think it's the same story that Tokyo man works at Tokyo, and Osaka man works at Osaka. Is Shinkansen actually need?

A highspeed line, in any country, will not only release the pressure over other means of transportation, but creat new possibilities for people by making the act of moving between cities easier and faster. You may not understand that once you were born in that reality, but Japanese cities were not as integrated in the past as they are now.

Well, you say Japan has developed by Shinkansen connecting each city tightly, don't you? I agree with you in a half. The first Tokaido Shinkansen was built between Tokyo and Osaka, and both cities have developed. After that, Sanyo (Osaka-Hakata) and something like that to connect other rural areas were opened. But those rural areas have not changed so much.
