No matter how large the criminal/threat is, or whether or not he is wearing a vest, one center mass shot with any 230gr round and he is going to be incapacitated. 357 is a much faster moving round, and therefore does not deliver halfway near the kinetic energy of a 45 acp, as this video depicts with that watermelon. Cool vid dude
@olivjm If you're saying the .45 has twice the kinetic energy and therefore, more powerful than the .357magnum, then I'm sorry to tell you that you have no idea what you're talking about. Why don't you check for yourself and calculate muzzle energy between the two calibers? You will find out that the .357mag is ballistically superior. There are so many flaws in your statement I don't even know where to start.
Nice, finally an accurate video for the .45/.357 comparison! I'm sick of these cheesy anti .45ers that have a 158gr hollow point .357 and a FMJ for the .45, Great vid!
Interesting video but when shooting watermelons you might wanna try wrapping them in saran wrap to better simulate flesh. Without it the melons break apart easily and don't give you a hollow point wound cavity to take a close look at.
The .357 blew a nice hole thru, but more melon was still left behind as compared to the .45 melon. 357 magnum beat the 45 acp. that is fact. but the 45 acp magazines hold more bullet. If I had one shot I would take the 357 magnum. just look at its stats.
Anyone know where to get Rossi R971 wood replacement grips? A guy on u tube has some search for rossi 357. The title says "AGAIN!!!! GREAT!!!!!" But isnt respongin to me.
Uh, our government also switched to 9mm cuz alot of our allies use it, therefore if You run out of ammo theirs would fit in our sidearm...Just my two cents
Unless ur using specific ammo a .357 will penetrate straight through the target without transferring all its energy..a +p .45 round CAN penetrate obstacles (winter coat lol) with NO problem whatsoever and there are way more buying options..love my .45
.45 ACP doesnt even come close to .357 Magnum and who ever thinks or says the .45 is better is without a doubt a rookie at this game. Before you comment on this comment do yourself a favor and do some research. .357 is over kill in self defense senario. .45 ACP was developed for stopping power. But in a winter senario when some one has heavy clothing .45 has a problem penetrating. Thats why now you has most police officers carry the .40 cal or the 9mm +P.
@wilmerpola777 Your trying to say that the .45ACP has trouble going through winter clothes so the police switched to .40's and 9mm? Are you on crack? The 45 has more power and will go through any winter coat. The police switched to 9mm autoloaders for round capacity not because the .45 was lacking in the power catagory.
Lol no crack for me tnx. A criminal in Ohio was shot at by a police officer and was taken down by the shot, but the officer realized that the round never penetrated, cuz the offender was at a distance & was wearing heavy clothing, it only broke a rib. The 9 in the other hand will penetrate, but does not carry a heavy punch. Now the .40 cal has both. Im not knocking .45 acp in fact there's a very good ammo for 45. "Grizzly Extreme 175 grn. HP this ammo is sick.
@DTOMUSA74 Another reason I herd (for the military atleast) is that the 9mm is a lot easier to teach people how to control. The elite military groups still seem to lean towards the .45.
no point in having soldiers or cops shooting a bigger round if they can't hit anything.
@Halvorson Yeah I have read that too but the ability of the shooter to control a 9mm better than the .45acp proves if anything, that the .45 has more punch(which it does) and therefor is the better manstopper. The military and police switched from .45 to 9mm because you can carry more rounds with the 9 and the 9mm has less recoil for the increasingly more frail members of the law enforcement and military. More woman in both fields wanted a gun with less kick. Thats why they switched.
@DTOMUSA74 that's true but i really like the 45 in close range situation, for you can stop a man charging towards you with one shot to the body i prove it to myself i shot a man attacking me at 10 ft away with a very sharp machete i shoot em in the right ankle and broke into pieces and that stops him with just one shot, but in the law enforcements it's good if they have the 9mm for having greater capacity and enough power to harm and neutralized foe and cheap to practice easy master.
@DTOMUSA74 actually, they switched to the 9mm partly for those reasons, but also because, on paper at least, the 9mm has similar energy. what they're learning now is that life isn't paper. a bigger hole lets more blood out. there is no thing as a one-shot stop (consistently, anyways), but the .45acp takes less rounds to put them down.
@RustySurfer23 nifty i dont own any guns but i will once i have a job and move out im still in high achool but ive fired a .40 but not a .45 i could really tell the differt bettew a .357 and a .38 special
@Gumbie2009 just stop callin people stupid wen u have no idea wat u r talkin about. 45 kicks 357s ass. And ur name truly is RETARDED. It still makes me and my friends laugh our asses off wen i say I got in to a fite w/ sum dumbass named gumbie LOfuckinL!!!!!!
@TheB3rTh3IS3n. Alright how bout I grab my 45 shoot you and see if it knocks u on your ass then u can tell me that there ain't no such thing as stopin power and if u insist I will even let u run at me at see if it STOPS YOU!!! Stopping power is a term used to verify that a gun will stop someone in there tracks and u can say wat u like but I know the 45 has more STOPPING POWER than the 357!!!!!!!!!!!
.357 has more range and power BUT the 45 has more stopin power. I would go with 45 partly because my favorite handguns are 45s but the .357 is one awsome round
@CarlsonsRaidersUSMC WROOOOOOOOOOOOOONG!!! 357 Magnum has more power AND more stopping power. By the way.... There´s no such thing as "stopping power".
@TheB3rTh3lS3n there is a such thing as stopping power and to prevent further argument both the 45 and 357 has alot of it but the 45 is a BIG hunk of lead and it will knock u down
@CarlsonsRaidersUSMC Dude.... You don´t know what you are talking about. "Stopping power" is a colloquial. You can´t prove "stopping power" with mathematics and psychics. It´s nothing but a fancy word. Don´t forget, that the 357 magnum has been proven to be the most effective one shot stopper of all handgun loads. This has been proven by statistics, and statistics never lie :)
@CarlsonsRaidersUSMC Wow that has to be one of the most ignorant comments on youtube. Just because you like a round doesn't make it better. Here are the statistics-.45 410 ft/pounds, 960 ft/sec at muzzle. -.357 610 ft/pounds, 1450 ft/sec both at the muzzle and mid range of capabillity. Better to keep your mouth closed then open it and let everyone know your a idiot.
@Gumbie2009 callin my comment stupid? your name is F***in gummie!!! u sound like a freakin queer and i dont know wat the heck ur comment said but all i know is u dont like the 45 so just suk my balls and think about ur retarded name b4 u go callin somethin stupid!!!!>:(
@CarlsonsRaidersUSMC LOL thats all you got dude really my name is stupid? I love .45 acp cock chugger I have two 1911 so get your pussy ass of youtube or start talking about something you know about, which by the sounds of it isn't much.
I didnt see what comparison you were making with a 45 against a 357 mag but I do know that a 357 magnum will shoot circles and circles and circles and circles around a 45 acp,,,no comparison at all as far as power and reach and hitting a long or close target,,,357 is probably twice as strong as a 45 acp and you only have to check the ballistics book to see,,oh well not sure what you were saying here but put your money on the 357 in any situtation and you will be the winner hands down, haha,,Rick
In response to problems encountered by American units fighting Moro guerrillas during the Philippine-American War, the then-standard Colt M1892 revolver, in .38 Long Colt, (similar to a .357 mag) in terms of stopping power, as the Moros had very high battle morale and frequently used drugs to inhibit the sensation of pain. The U.S. Army reverted to using the M1873 revolver in .45 Colt caliber, the heavier bullet was found to be more effective against charging tribesmen.
@ihotnow hmmm I think you should read up on this one. The .38 long colt is not comparable in ft/lbs of energy or muzzle velocity to a .357 Magnum. Your talking a black powder cartridge vs a smokeless powder cartridge that was developed several decades later. The .357 Magnum is over 3 times more powerful then a .38 Long Colt cartridge.
@hogger129 an smg or assult rifle would have a magazine except select rifles such as the M-1 Garands have clips if u c the rounds any which way except the top it's a clip if not it's a magazine also the 1911 sufers horrible accuracy aftr 20 ft or so it's hard 2 hit things like targets unless it's like a commando 1911
Everyone likes comparing a .45 to a .357 mag which I think is stupid. Two different animals. If you want to compare a .357 to something, campare it to other mags. Put it side by side with the 44. mag or the .45 winchester mag.
Heard both arguements. Heard a trauma responder remark once that a through and through with hardball can be worse because he's got two bleeding wounds to deal with. Maybe he just meant for him, not necessarily the victim? Personally, if I'm taking a round, I'd prefer the ball. Internal carnage doesn't appeal to me, lol. I dunno. People live from multiple .45 wounds and people die from single .22 shots. Probably a lopsided mix of a little bit of the shooters skill and a whole pile of "chance"...
Why use hollowpoints at all in .45? The reason your shooting a piece of lead that is almost a half inch in diameter is so it doesn't have to expand. The GI .45 load in a good gun is almost foolproof.
@faffaflunkie Not true. Hardball rounds don't cause much bleeding and tend to shoot through flesh without causing much trauma. The edges and expansion of hollow points tend to cut better and cause more blood loss and the mushrooming effect helps dump the energy into the target much like a Mike Tyson punch. The ballistic evidence has proven this over and over again. Also less chance of bullet exiting and hitting an innocent bystander with hp's. Lastly hp's tend to be more accurate

@armedandready72 Please tell me that a 9mm Nato round does not cause bleeding and trauma. Most non military shooting deaths are caused by .22 and .25 caliber rounds which are rarely hollowpoints in those calibers. Of course round nose bullets should be avoided in high powered guns like .the 357 magnum where over penetration is a problem. The .45 acp is tried and true with the G.I. hardball load. Heavy and slow in handgun calibers is the way to go. The hardball load is consistent and effective.
@armedandready72 true, but accuracy isn't really a big deal since most self defense situations take place at very close ranges. you are indeed right about the over-penetration factor. if you are carrying, and have to use your pistol, I don't want to have to worry about whats behind the bad guy. that's why I just bought a .45. I also have a stub nose .357, but came to my sences, and realised it's simply too much. gonna load it with .38's so the wife can handle it.
Hollow tips? What are you some punk ass gangsta wannabe? It's called a hollow point. You most likely call a gun a gat and a magazine a clip and a grip a handle and a bullet a shell and a robbery a hold up. This comment is not completely serious so don't bitch at me unless you really want to in which case bitch away.
@tubevideoguy762 dude i know i say the same thing my brothers look at me like im stupid when i say its called a magazine and they be like no its a clip come on a mag doesnt even clip on it locks in place duh. im just learning about guns but i know some things
@tubevideoguy762 lol how the heck you owe a gun but yet you dont known the proper terms for each part and accessory that is funny.hey do you know any glocks that fire .45 rounds?
Actually it's quite easy to own a gun and not know a lot of the proper words. I didn't know very much at first. Yes there are glocks that fire the .45 acp. They are the glock 21, glock 30 and glock 36.
Not a fair comparison: Taurus 617 is a compact 2-inch barrel revolver compared to a full-sized 45 ACP Auto pistol. Use a full-sized 357 revolver with a 4-inch barrel and the 357 gains 200 fps from the extra 2 inches of barrel. Watch a 125 gr JHP full-power 357 impact from a 4-inch barrel and you'll quickly see why the 357 remains the #1 rated man-stopper to this day! It's even more devastating from a 6-inch revolver; the 125 gr JHP will approach 2400 fps from a 24-inch lever action barrel!
Before you ever buy a 'nice' gun. Get a hi-point .45 acp, and a mosin nagant 7.62x54 lock these two things up, and go buy the rest of ur fun guns. Total price ? LOL 300 dollars TOPS
@BALJIT147 - Hi Point is for people who don't want to break $200 on a firearm. In my opinion, you get what you pay for. Then again, I have heard people who have had very reliable Hi Points, and those who have had horrible ones. I imagine it is a decent gun if you clean it often. But nobody would honestly consider carrying it. Too big, too heavy. I don't know why people don't just save a little more and get a nice 1911 that isn't name brand. Or a used Ruger or Glock or something.
@BALJIT147 - yeah but when you buy a norinco, you don't always know what you're getting. i heard that a lot of the norinco 1911s are just as good as some others. while some are just total piles of junk. i like norinco's rifles more than their pistols. i have a friend with a norinco type 56 carbine (semi-auto only sks). reliable as hell. not quite as high quality or accurate as something american made, but you can fill it full of shit and it still fires.
@BALJIT147 - Norinco? I know one manufacturer that offers a lifetime warranty is Hi-Point. Their pistols are good for home defense and range time, but other than that they're useless. But they are a good value. $150 or so with a lifetime warranty. Idk though. I bought a quality firearm - a Springfield Loaded M1911A1. I almost spent another $300 and bought the TRP Operator, but I liked the Loaded just fine.
@BALJIT147 - yeah i had a friend of a friend who said his hi point could outshoot my springer. needless to say i shot a 1 1/2" group at 40 yards and put his worthless pos hi point to shame. yeah norinco makes one that's a copy of a tokarev. not sure what it's called. i didn't know they made cz copies. i like .45s the best. i want to get more 1911s and i was looking at a usp. not really into the russian pattern pistols.
@hogger129 although i definitely like the originals the best norinco makes an affordable copy of just about everything, they even have a sig p226 clone for like 370! i dont no how good they could be but from what i have heard they function well, i can't be sure as i have never owned or fired one but people who own them say good things about them
.45 did more melon damage because more expanding lead is great for soft targets. .357 would be superior in penetration. Verdict? Use .45 unless the guy coming at you has body armor, and use what you're more accurate with.
@RRViper800TT The .45 did more damage because the .357 mag was shot thru a short barrel and it was a heavy 140 grain loading. Napoleon Dynamite is also a shitty shot. The .357 Magnum sports a 96% chance of a 1 shot stop. Heavy and slow doesn't beat light and fast, if you consider 125 grains light. Hydrostatic shock is something a .45 can not create without light loads, and it is what makes the target hit the floor shocked, and then bleed to death.
@Southern661 That's what I mean, the results from this video are so misleading, you'd never know that the .357 is so much more powerful. 125 grain is not at all light, but I know a .223 round is light. Is it true that .223 is to fast/lightweight for self defense?
@RRViper800TT I am not a very big fan of Heavy and slow, or light and fast. I believe 55 grain .223 is too light to be a reliable rifle round. It works sometimes, sometimes it does not. IMHO, it is an unperdictable round. It can easily chance course. What if you aim at the heart and hit a lung? I will always opt for 7.62x39mm rather than .223. contrary to popular belief, it is not slow at 2,400 FPS. IT carries the punch of a .357 magnum at ranges that the little .223 pokes little .22 holes.
@Southern661 - .223 is decent for its intended use. 6.8 SPC is better. And it's lighter than 7.62x51 NATO. In my hunting rifle, I use .300 Winchester Magnum (7.62x67) and it provides plenty of power. It's a little more than necessary. I mean I could honestly downgrade to .30-06 and be okay. .308 is a good round also. It has the power like a .30-06 but less recoil. Only difference is that the .30-06 and .300 Winchester Mag can be loaded with heavier weight bullets.
@RRViper800TT Nothing can be too fast, faster is always better. A bullet can be too light, however. 55 grains at 3200 FPS is too light, but fast. However, 75 grains at 2700 (16" barrel) has a great velocity to weight ratio. Shooting 75 grain Hornandy TAP from a 1:9 carbine will degrade accurcy past about 100 yards, but its sufficent within. IMO, if you want a .223, get a SIG 556 (they all have 1:7) and shoot hornandy TAP and reload your own ammo.
What was that, a 1&7/8 inch barrel J frame? Put the same round in a 4 inch barrel, to be comparable to the HK45C and you will see much different results.
heres the problem I see with this test. A watermelon is not a good indicator with hollow points because they really can't expand in a watermelon. The rounds go completely through.
It's a shame that so many shooters make a mess in the great outdoors and don't bother to clean up after themselves. I'm not saying these people didn't clean up, but the fact is that a lot of people don't and that's a shame.
This really doesn't prove anything. Back in the 90's there was a series of test that involved shooting goats w/ various handgun cal called the "Strasbourg Test". Their test placed the .357mag above the .45acp in stopping power. The .38spc was shown to be the worse performer coming in under a .22long. Obviously though, bullet placement has everything to do w/ stopping power. My primary CCW is a .357 and my side carry is a .45acp. I love both.
@SouthernKudzu most statisticians agree that the strasbourg tests were an elaborate hoax created to sell lightweight ammunition. The creators fell into the "too-good-to-be-true" trap in many instances. Example: of the 600 goats supposedly used for testing, which supposedly were in great shortage, all supposedly weight within 3 pounds of 160lbs.
Statistically, .357 Magnum JHP is a better one-shot stopper than .45ACP JHP. Honestly, I'd take the .45ACP JHP just because I'd rather carry a 1911 than a revolver.
@hogger129 where are you getting these statistics? One shot stop is a myth, no study has every been conducted with a broad enough coverage of subjects to be statistically viable. There are simply too many variables in actual shootings to make "street results" valid. The fact is, you should never rely on one shot, I say empty the magazine no matter what you are shooting.
@hogger129 Statistically it's only a couple of points difference. Any round that does better than 90% in the one shot stop category in actual shootings by law enforcement will get my vote. I carry both at different times and also feel very comfortable carrying a small 15 shot .40S&W. Most reasonable self defense calibers will reliably stop most assailants with less than their full capacity of ammo being expended. Shot placement is more critical than caliber. Practice, practice, practice !!!!!!!!
@gunslinger5854 - True. Actually I heard .40 S&W is a fairly good one-shot stopper statistically. Also, the difference could just be in that .357 Magnum has been in use by law enforcement longer than any round except maybe 9mm Luger. Again, "one-shot stops" stuff is just a lot of numbers. It all depends on the firearm and how well a shooter can shoot the firearm that makes all the difference. .357 SIG is a pretty good round that's come out too. I think it's based on the .40 S&W.
@hogger129 I believe the .45ACP has been around longer in law enforcement than any round other than the .38 Special. The stats I was referring to were all shootings by law officers recorded and reported to the FBI. The coroners involved took extra care to examine all the wound cavities and determine which shot if more than one was the specific cause of death. This was a rather long involved study with new ammo being introduced all the time, the numbers still favor the .357Mag but just barely.
both good bullets, still 45 acp is king

@wilmerpola777 Your trying to say that the .45ACP has trouble going through winter clothes so the police switched to .40's and 9mm? Are you on crack? The 45 has more power and will go through any winter coat. The police switched to 9mm autoloaders for round capacity not because the .45 was lacking in the power catagory.
DTOMUSA74 9 months ago 9
Lol no crack for me tnx. A criminal in Ohio was shot at by a police officer and was taken down by the shot, but the officer realized that the round never penetrated, cuz the offender was at a distance & was wearing heavy clothing, it only broke a rib. The 9 in the other hand will penetrate, but does not carry a heavy punch. Now the .40 cal has both. Im not knocking .45 acp in fact there's a very good ammo for 45. "Grizzly Extreme 175 grn. HP this ammo is sick.
wilmerpola777 9 months ago
@DTOMUSA74 Another reason I herd (for the military atleast) is that the 9mm is a lot easier to teach people how to control. The elite military groups still seem to lean towards the .45.
no point in having soldiers or cops shooting a bigger round if they can't hit anything.
Halvorson 8 months ago
@Halvorson Yeah I have read that too but the ability of the shooter to control a 9mm better than the .45acp proves if anything, that the .45 has more punch(which it does) and therefor is the better manstopper. The military and police switched from .45 to 9mm because you can carry more rounds with the 9 and the 9mm has less recoil for the increasingly more frail members of the law enforcement and military. More woman in both fields wanted a gun with less kick. Thats why they switched.
DTOMUSA74 8 months ago
@DTOMUSA74 that's true but i really like the 45 in close range situation, for you can stop a man charging towards you with one shot to the body i prove it to myself i shot a man attacking me at 10 ft away with a very sharp machete i shoot em in the right ankle and broke into pieces and that stops him with just one shot, but in the law enforcements it's good if they have the 9mm for having greater capacity and enough power to harm and neutralized foe and cheap to practice easy master.
kentawagi 8 months ago
@DTOMUSA74 actually, they switched to the 9mm partly for those reasons, but also because, on paper at least, the 9mm has similar energy. what they're learning now is that life isn't paper. a bigger hole lets more blood out. there is no thing as a one-shot stop (consistently, anyways), but the .45acp takes less rounds to put them down.

@CarlsonsRaidersUSMC Dude.... You don´t know what you are talking about. "Stopping power" is a colloquial. You can´t prove "stopping power" with mathematics and psychics. This has been proven by statistics, and statistics never lie :)

The U.S. Army reverted to using the M1873 revolver in .45 Colt caliber, the heavier bullet was found to be more effective against charging tribesmen.
ihotnow 1 year ago
@ihotnow hmmm I think you should read up on this one. The .38 long colt is not comparable in ft/lbs of energy or muzzle velocity to a .357 Magnum. Your talking a black powder cartridge vs a smokeless powder cartridge that was developed several decades later. The .357 Magnum is over 3 times more powerful then a .38 Long Colt cartridge.

RugerMan73 1 year ago
Why use hollowpoints at all in .45? The reason your shooting a piece of lead that is almost a half inch in diameter is so it doesn't have to expand. The GI .45 load in a good gun is almost foolproof.
faffaflunkie 1 year ago
@faffaflunkie Not true. Hardball rounds don't cause much bleeding and tend to shoot through flesh without causing much trauma. The edges and expansion of hollow points tend to cut better and cause more blood loss and the mushrooming effect helps dump the energy into the target much like a Mike Tyson punch. The ballistic evidence has proven this over and over again. Also less chance of bullet exiting and hitting an innocent bystander with hp's. Lastly hp's tend to be more accurate

armedandready72 1 year ago
@armedandready72 Please tell me that a 9mm Nato round does not cause bleeding and trauma. Most non military shooting deaths are caused by .22 and .25 caliber rounds which are rarely hollowpoints in those calibers. Of course round nose bullets should be avoided in high powered guns like .the 357 magnum where over penetration is a problem. The .45 acp is tried and true with the G.I. hardball load. Heavy and slow in handgun calibers is the way to go. The hardball load is consistent and effective.
faffaflunkie 1 year ago
@armedandready72 true, but accuracy isn't really a big deal since most self defense situations take place at very close ranges. you are indeed right about the over-penetration factor. if you are carrying, and have to use your pistol, I don't want to have to worry about whats behind the bad guy. that's why I just bought a .45. I also have a stub nose .357, but came to my sences, and realised it's simply too much. gonna load it with .38's so the wife can handle it.

BALJIT147 1 year ago
@BALJIT147 - Hi Point is for people who don't want to break $200 on a firearm. In my opinion, you get what you pay for. Then again, I have heard people who have had very reliable Hi Points, and those who have had horrible ones. I imagine it is a decent gun if you clean it often. But nobody would honestly consider carrying it. Too big, too heavy. I don't know why people don't just save a little more and get a nice 1911 that isn't name brand. Or a used Ruger or Glock or something.
hogger129 1 year ago
@hogger129 you can get a norinco (chinese brand) 1911 for under 400, it's got all the fancy bells and whistles
BALJIT147 1 year ago
@BALJIT147 - yeah but when you buy a norinco, you don't always know what you're getting. i heard that a lot of the norinco 1911s are just as good as some others. while some are just total piles of junk. i like norinco's rifles more than their pistols. i have a friend with a norinco type 56 carbine (semi-auto only sks). reliable as hell. not quite as high quality or accurate as something american made, but you can fill it full of shit and it still fires.
hogger129 1 year ago
@hogger129 well if you do get a piece of junk just send it back they have a life time warranty
BALJIT147 1 year ago
@BALJIT147 - Norinco? I know one manufacturer that offers a lifetime warranty is Hi-Point. Their pistols are good for home defense and range time, but other than that they're useless. But they are a good value. $150 or so with a lifetime warranty. Idk though. I bought a quality firearm - a Springfield Loaded M1911A1. I almost spent another $300 and bought the TRP Operator, but I liked the Loaded just fine.
hogger129 1 year ago
@hogger129 you can also get a norinco for 150, its a tokarev or cz model i think, and high points are very aesthetically unappealing
BALJIT147 1 year ago
@BALJIT147 - yeah i had a friend of a friend who said his hi point could outshoot my springer. needless to say i shot a 1 1/2" group at 40 yards and put his worthless pos hi point to shame. yeah norinco makes one that's a copy of a tokarev. not sure what it's called. i didn't know they made cz copies. i like .45s the best. i want to get more 1911s and i was looking at a usp. not really into the russian pattern pistols.

.45 did more melon damage because more expanding lead is great for soft targets. .357 would be superior in penetration. Verdict? Use .45 unless the guy coming at you has body armor, and use what you're more accurate with.
RRViper800TT 1 year ago
@RRViper800TT The .45 did more damage because the .357 mag was shot thru a short barrel and it was a heavy 140 grain loading. Napoleon Dynamite is also a shitty shot. The .357 Magnum sports a 96% chance of a 1 shot stop. Heavy and slow doesn't beat light and fast, if you consider 125 grains light. Hydrostatic shock is something a .45 can not create without light loads, and it is what makes the target hit the floor shocked, and then bleed to death.
Southern661 1 year ago
@Southern661 That's what I mean, the results from this video are so misleading, you'd never know that the .357 is so much more powerful. 125 grain is not at all light, but I know a .223 round is light. Is it true that .223 is to fast/lightweight for self defense?
RRViper800TT 1 year ago
@RRViper800TT I am not a very big fan of Heavy and slow, or light and fast. I believe 55 grain .223 is too light to be a reliable rifle round. It works sometimes, sometimes it does not. IMHO, it is an unperdictable round. It can easily chance course. What if you aim at the heart and hit a lung? I will always opt for 7.62x39mm rather than .223. contrary to popular belief, it is not slow at 2,400 FPS. IT carries the punch of a .357 magnum at ranges that the little .223 pokes little .22 holes.
Southern661 1 year ago
@Southern661 - .223 is decent for its intended use. 6.8 SPC is better. And it's lighter than 7.62x51 NATO. In my hunting rifle, I use .300 Winchester Magnum (7.62x67) and it provides plenty of power. It's a little more than necessary. I mean I could honestly downgrade to .30-06 and be okay. .308 is a good round also. It has the power like a .30-06 but less recoil. Only difference is that the .30-06 and .300 Winchester Mag can be loaded with heavier weight bullets.
hogger129 1 year ago
@RRViper800TT Nothing can be too fast, faster is always better. A bullet can be too light, however. 55 grains at 3200 FPS is too light, but fast. However, 75 grains at 2700 (16" barrel) has a great velocity to weight ratio. Shooting 75 grain Hornandy TAP from a 1:9 carbine will degrade accurcy past about 100 yards, but its sufficent within. IMO, if you want a .223, get a SIG 556 (they all have 1:7) and shoot hornandy TAP and reload your own ammo.

SouthernKudzu 1 year ago
@SouthernKudzu most statisticians agree that the strasbourg tests were an elaborate hoax created to sell lightweight ammunition. The creators fell into the "too-good-to-be-true" trap in many instances. Example: of the 600 goats supposedly used for testing, which supposedly were in great shortage, all supposedly weight within 3 pounds of 160lbs.
MrBallistics 1 year ago
@SouthernKudzu My primary CCW is also a 357 magnum and I love the 45acp but I'm revolver man.
Mr291229 1 year ago
Statistically, .357 Magnum JHP is a better one-shot stopper than .45ACP JHP. Honestly, I'd take the .45ACP JHP just because I'd rather carry a 1911 than a revolver.
hogger129 1 year ago 22
@hogger129 where are you getting these statistics? One shot stop is a myth, no study has every been conducted with a broad enough coverage of subjects to be statistically viable. There are simply too many variables in actual shootings to make "street results" valid. The fact is, you should never rely on one shot, I say empty the magazine no matter what you are shooting.

usmarinessince1775 1 year ago
@hogger129 Statistically it's only a couple of points difference. Any round that does better than 90% in the one shot stop category in actual shootings by law enforcement will get my vote. I carry both at different times and also feel very comfortable carrying a small 15 shot .40S&W. Most reasonable self defense calibers will reliably stop most assailants with less than their full capacity of ammo being expended. Shot placement is more critical than caliber. Practice, practice, practice !!!!!!!!
gunslinger5854 1 year ago
@gunslinger5854 - True. Actually I heard .40 S&W is a fairly good one-shot stopper statistically. Also, the difference could just be in that .357 Magnum has been in use by law enforcement longer than any round except maybe 9mm Luger. Again, "one-shot stops" stuff is just a lot of numbers. It all depends on the firearm and how well a shooter can shoot the firearm that makes all the difference. .357 SIG is a pretty good round that's come out too. I think it's based on the .40 S&W.
hogger129 1 year ago
@hogger129 I believe the .45ACP has been around longer in law enforcement than any round other than the .38 Special. The stats I was referring to were all shootings by law officers recorded and reported to the FBI. The coroners involved took extra care to examine all the wound cavities and determine which shot if more than one was the specific cause of death. This was a rather long involved study with new ammo being introduced all the time, the numbers still favor the .357Mag but just barely.
