The liquid they secrete contains enzymes which help to break down the silk proteins and the adult moths easily push their way through the cocoon. Silk farmers do kill nearly all of the pupa contained in the cocoons because the adult moths destroy the cocoons when hatching. Only a certain percent of cocoons are reserved for allowing the adults to hatch and breed.
also, the eggs are not all fertilized as the adults mate. The sperm is held in the abdomen of the female and the eggs are fertilizied as they are deposited.
well my silk worm eggs hatched not all of them i thing its because it was summer and was really hot but then they all died :( and i dident know we had to put them in the fridge so the other silk worms in the eggs died2 :|
@JuliusTheDragon hey julius can you please help me!!! im about to breed silkworms can you tell me everything i need and everything i need to do please! thank you :)
@JuliusTheDragon thats what i did i did all of my research but i wanna know everything that you do cuz you might do something different from everybody else you see what im saying it would be very helpful if you can tell me everything that you do and what forum are you talking bout? i dont know any that talks about silk worms if you do please give me the link
@curtbone100 its called repticzone they will give you silkworm info, just ask. im not going to tell you everything....that would take hours and if you did do research then you would have several diffrent teqniques and and advise sources. if you have a specific question please ask.
@JuliusTheDragon ok thanks i never been to that forum before so can you atleast tell me what to do on there? you know like how to ask questions and what do i go to to read stuff about silkworms?
@curtbone100 okay either you lied about research or you really are helpless. you create an account then make a new post asking a question....AFTER you have searched the forum for silkworm info. Go to any of the three bearded dragon sub forums. I will answer logical questions like at what temps and what kind of food...but how to ask a question...really?
@JuliusTheDragon yes im really helpless but you dont have to be like that i mean geesh you really act like you cant help nobody out all you have to do is explain it to me in simplest terms thats all its not like im telling you to tell me a story or something but anyway thanks alot i guess
Great vid but I thought their saliva to start dissolving the silk. That's why silk farmers kill the moths while they are inside the cocoon to save all the precious silk. overall very good info though
no, there salavias helpes guide the silk into the cocoon shape...its like a sticky cement to hold it all together...and if the farmers killed the moths then there would be no next generation....and no baby worms...so there would only be one harvest
Damn dude, you know your silkworm stuff, how many hours did you spend researching all this stuff? All I knew about these critters it's that they are moth caterpillars, and that they are originally from china that's it..Now I know a lot more good video guy.
ayyyy Naich! it's Brian aka colorcham427. sweet video dude. For future reference, simply sex the zebra larvae that you are planning on holding for breeding. put the female (black lined larvae) in one bin, and the solid white in another. theyll cocoon emerge, and then u can pair each in a cup with a piece of paper as the floor.
simple and works! hope that helped some!
ill lert you know when i have hornworms for sale! peace dude,
i loved the video but i couldn't help notice u saying "as u can c" like twenty times.
BTW, im raising my first batch of silkworms and this morning, when i fed them mulberry leaves, some of them threw up this yellowish liquid. Is this because the leaves were wet or perhaps oily from our skin? IDK i'd like a response and thanks a bunch!
id try it...if it orks out id stick to it...they take a while so you would need to have a supply at your house from online or pet stores...dont expect them to be feed anytime soon...cause it take them two weeks just to get to feeding size for the leo...and their whole life to be "BIG" enough for a full grown dragon and cham...good luck
yes it is on a large scale. they take over 3 months from your start of the project to the end...so if you are feeding a beardie and mabey a few frogs...i would say its not worth it...i just tried in for fun. But if you have multiple herps that take in alot of food daily then sure why not.
out of ten clutches of these eggs i would say about1800 eggs...but only 1000 would probably hatch....patients is key!
is it economical to breed them, and is it somewhat simple to do??? i use them to feed my herps, so how many would you get out of about 10 sets of eggs
i feed these to my lizards
