  • do F40PHs always run that high of RPMs when sitting still? i thought they had separate engines for HEP.

  • The original F40PH had the HEP on the prime mover. The later models (F40PH-2, F40PHM etc...) had a seperate engine for HEP.

  • Only 2 of the 4 traction motors control HEP. But technically depending on the load, all 4 traction motors can run HEP if needed. Depending on the load AKA how much cars.

  • what?

Last i checked, HEP and traction motors have nothing to do with each other. HEP powers the cars being pulled.....

Unless you're sayin while the train is in motion, the traction motors that isnt needed to maintain a certain speed can be used as generators (jus like dynamic braking) to power the cars out back.

  • Well it's sad that the only heritage cars running today are only baggage cars, diner cars, and one dome car. Even though eventually Amtrak is going to purchase new single leveled eqiptment in the future.

  • The process of obtaining new single-level equipment has already begun.

  • Way ahead of you on that one 130 new Viewliner IIs with an option to order 70 more cars configured in Baggage, Baggage-Dorm, Diner, Sleepers.

  • i love the heritage dining car eat in one on the cresent

  • man want a waste of gas

  • wow did the eastbound have a dome car?!

  • Yeah the eastbound (48) is on this video. It can be seen at 3:08 as well as other points later on.

  • I heard that the train was doing 75mph before it left the tracks.

  • How late was train 49/449? Plus did like have to make another Lake Shore Limited starting out at this station going to Chicago?

  • The train was about a half an hour late when it derailed. They bussed passengers at the remaining stations to Chicago or whatever westward station they were going to.

  • I don't know if they do, but I think Amtrak still has some Slumbercoaches and other heritage passenger cars around here in Hialeah, Florida for sale.I'm not sure if they are still around though.

  • Only Heritage still in service are the diners and baggage cars. Only a couple sleepers are still in Hialeah, most have been scrapped.

  • You've seen them there?

  • No, but my father, being an old railbuff, went and took a few pictures.

  • wow a train derailment brings out the worst in people, those people in the station looked really miserable and the train crew was pissy

  • that's not nearly the worst in people

  • yeah i guess so
