Yes, a wonderful song, though am I the only fan out there willing to 'observe' that despite not being dead, his output of compilations over the years rehashing old material time and time and time again risks this lyric becoming ( unintentionally ) - erm - ironic ?? Anyone bought them all and felt deceived ???
i just love this song, it just seems to unfold progesively and keeps adding new sides of a story, barely at the end u realise what it's all about. i agree, it's one of the most underrated songs ever, and , in my opinion, definately worth a place in the top 5 of the best songs ever written.
It is absolutely one of the best songs I have ever heard. Simply brilliant. I agree with the other comments here. Most people I know who have hear this song are as blown away as I am with the lyrics.
@Slapbass13 you're approaching this from the wrong direction. keep in mind moz was a fan club president before he was a superstar. it's not about the record industry but about the relationships between celebrities and their fans--whining about industry suits is the only thing the narrator can do for a person who they never knew but genuinely cared about.
I think this was probably one of the Smiths most powerful and lyrically poignant songs -- and there's alot of competition for that accolade. Still gives me goosebumps 20 years later. There's not a single throw away line -- pure poetry from start to finish.
"What makes most people feel happy, leads us headlong into harm". Someone said "I dont know if moz saved my life or ruined it". Both statements, I think are true.
"I walked a pace behind you at the soundcheck, you're just the same as I am..." - along with the tone of his voice, the longing captured there is almost too much.
Absolutely love this tune one of their greatest, incredible to think the smiths never played it live :(. What i would give to see a reunion, just to see johnny and morrissey nail this!
a truly accurate portrayl of the money driven motives of so much of our media be it record companies or cynical tv production companies or the popular press

Least fave Smiths song.
Unsubtle, too long, petty.
Sorry Mozza!
Slapbass13 2 years ago
Are you serious? It's my fav song!!! The lyrics, the music...so perfect.
sidandmoi 2 years ago 3
Lyrics- unsubtle, petty. He sounds like he's having such a petty whine at the industry.
The music is seriously cool, and the guitar solo is lean and economical.
But its the length and the fact that in theis vid, Moz can't really hit the high note.
Slapbass13 2 years ago
Well the album version is by far better. The song is really long, took me days to learn it by heart.
But the lyrics are so beautiful. And the best part is from 3:45

"Harm" suggests that the fan murders his idol who's become a disgrace.
"Walked a pace behind you" stalking after being rejected.
"They cannot touch you now." Says enough.

fantastic song. my absolute favorite smiths song.

Doesnt get much better than that - for me anyway.

Not done much of that yourself have you Moz?
Hypocrite much? How's the bank balance?
Still, great song and that.
