  • THE SMITHS ARE THE BEST BAND EVER!

  • You're just the same as I am, what makes most people feel happy, leads us headlong into harm.

  • "I touched you at the soundcheck. You had no real way of knowing, in my heart I begged, 'take me with you'".

  • @padraic2001eire I know... i know... exactly. 10 Thumbs up.

  • Amy Winehouse, anyone?

  • still one of my fave Smiths' songs

  • Absolutely pure Smiths wonderfulyl melodic music, wonderfully majestic

  • I really feel depressed with this song. I just love it, especially the line "sadly, this was your life; and you could've said no if you'd wanted to"

  • FANTASTIC! This is my all time favourite :D:D:D

  • Yes, a wonderful song, though am I the only fan out there willing to 'observe' that despite not being dead, his output of compilations over the years rehashing old material time and time and time again risks this lyric becoming ( unintentionally ) - erm - ironic ?? Anyone bought them all and felt deceived ???

  • agreed and easily the best song the smiths ever recorded.

  • i just love this song, it just seems to unfold progesively and keeps adding new sides of a story, barely at the end u realise what it's all about. i agree, it's one of the most underrated songs ever, and , in my opinion, definately worth a place in the top 5 of the best songs ever written.

  • They cannot touch you now, but me and my true love, will never meet again.

  • this song is so effin' good.

  • It is absolutely one of the best songs I have ever heard. Simply brilliant. I agree with the other comments here. Most people I know who have hear this song are as blown away as I am with the lyrics.

  • @Razorhalo i don't mind i s'pose that friends don't appreciate his songs makes them more something i s'pose

i just don't know anyone that will pause for a breath

  • brilliant song, strangeways was the best album (in my opinion) sad though, as it gives us a taster of how good they could have gone on to be : (

  • Its just not Morrissey without the quiff.

  • An under-rated gem, one of my favourite Smiths songs, gets me everytime...

  • Love it.

  • Are you serious? It's my fav song!!! The lyrics, the music...so perfect.

  • Lyrics- unsubtle, petty. He sounds like he's having such a petty whine at the industry.

The music is seriously cool, and the guitar solo is lean and economical.

But its the length and the fact that in theis vid, Moz can't really hit the high note.

  • Well the album version is by far better. The song is really long, took me days to learn it by heart.

But the lyrics are so beautiful. And the best part is from 3:45

  • @Slapbass13 you're approaching this from the wrong direction. keep in mind moz was a fan club president before he was a superstar. it's not about the record industry but about the relationships between celebrities and their fans--whining about industry suits is the only thing the narrator can do for a person who they never knew but genuinely cared about.

  • @mechashiva2 what do you mean he was a fan club president?

  • I think this was probably one of the Smiths most powerful and lyrically poignant songs -- and there's alot of competition for that accolade. Still gives me goosebumps 20 years later. There's not a single throw away line -- pure poetry from start to finish.

  • totally.

  • One man (like his Celtic cousin, Sean Connery) who aged soooo well. Very handsome over 40.

  • only one man could ever do this

  • "mtv, mtv, mtv, kiss their arse!"

    pure morrissey.

  • "What makes most people feel happy, leads us headlong into harm". Someone said "I dont know if moz saved my life or ruined it". Both statements, I think are true.

  • "Harm" suggests that the fan murders his idol who's become a disgrace.

"Walked a pace behind you" stalking after being rejected.

"They cannot touch you now." Says enough.

  • fantastic song. my absolute favorite smiths song.

  • "I walked a pace behind you at the soundcheck, you're just the same as I am..." - along with the tone of his voice, the longing captured there is almost too much.

Doesnt get much better than that - for me anyway.

  • Holy f. Do they ever come back this way. This song alone, is bigger than christianity and islam, and then some.

  • One of my favourite Smiths songs. Really hope he does this on his tour this summer. Roll on May 13th.

  • Many many thanks to you for posting this!

  • Absolutely love this tune one of their greatest, incredible to think the smiths never played it live :(. What i would give to see a reunion, just to see johnny and morrissey nail this!

  • Agreed!

  • My favorite song...I'll die to hear this live...thank you Morrissey and Smiths =)

  • mtv mtv kiss there arse lol

  • this is the maladjusted tour, and wasmy first ever morrissey concert. i cried when he covered this. bless you for posting this.

  • i danced my legs down to the knees, and it freakin hurt.

  • Tienes razón RTL, seguramente una de las canciones más injustamente olvidades.

  • Most underrated song of all time? I never see it mentioned anywhere, it's personally my #1 favourite.

  • you think like me mate. i love this song and the lyrics. cheers for the smiths!!

  • @RTL Why "underated"? My rate for this song was aways at the top. Ever. And fuck the rest.

  • @RTL ,I love this one too mate,,,,,we used to play card at my mates for days and thiS LP was always on.

  • AWESOME!

  • Right, like he can stop the Best-of's.

  • Well, most of that was done by his record-labels like Rough Trade. Obviously he hated it(the reason he wrote this song).

  • NilsBuss meet paulbuss

  • heaven knows i'm made up now.

  • Best strangeways song !

  • I strongly agree.

  • TheMozzfather is a TRUE legend.

  • Quality, and the lyrics are truer every year since 87 - agree about the guitars comment below: every Smiths fan could hum that solo

  • omg this was sweet!

wish i could have been there..

  • best smiths song ever. yup.

  • I change my mind about the best Smiths'song ever everyday. Definitely in my top 10 though.

Rusholme Ruffians is my fave ATM :)

  • a truly accurate portrayl of the money driven motives of so much of our media be it record companies or cynical tv production companies or the popular press

  • "Sadly, this was your life. But you could've set no, if you wanted to. You could have walked away, couldn't you?"

Those lyrics make me feel SO lonely. I love this song though!

  • probably the most under-rated Smiths song ever....

  • Bless their hearts for trying but Alain and Boz must be killing poor Johnny by butchering his guitar parts! Great Smiths song though

  • the guitars sounded fine =o)

  • amazing song written by an amazing person beatiful person :)

  • Epic in scope - goes right through you, you know?

  • Best song off of Strangeways, if not ever

  • you said: Best song off of Strangeways, if not ever

    I say: Agreed

  • they will never taint you in my eyes...

  • er... did he attempt at being a skinhead for a while?

  • just a shorter 'do' at the time....hairlines do recede. Moz realized he wasn't 20 anymore.

  • Great rendition of the "In my bedroom" line.

  • thank you suparni, this is my fav song in strangeways here we come

  • Many many thanks to you for posting this!

  • This is awesome. The Smiths broke up before touring anything off "Strangeways." Cheers to you suparni for posting!

  • I've never seen a live clip of this tune before! Thank you Suparni!

  • I have never loved anyone more in my entire life than Morrissey. This song WILL make a comeback. KROQ - you listening????????
