@hawkinsx33 indeed- but my guess is that the audience may have been expecting something more like the Yardbirds but got Zeppelin instead. The relatively lukewarm applause suggests that. Lucky for them they found more appreciative fans. I think this was recorded while they were fulfilling engagements originally booked for the Yardbirds which had just broken up- they had played their last show in July of '68. This was in March of '69.

I think they experimented a lot in the studio and, if i'm not mistaken, sometimes they edited the voice to sound different. Probably they considered that an innovation, but, sincerely, I think that they sometimes went too far and a lot of the passion you see in the live performances was lost in the studio.

@mojopin70 Whether Stairway was written before this song or not, it's very likely one influenced the other. If Stairway came first, then it was likely reused in a manner to suit this song or vice versa. Guitarists have certain patterns in which they play their guitars.

Love this! This had to be right before Led Zepelin II came out... they are only playing songs from the 1st album, and the 2nd one only came out months later.
For me it is truely a fulfillment of my dreams to see all these performances by Zeppelin. The band I have been fascinated by now for more than 20 years.

It's hard even to imagine Plant looking this young and healthy. His voice was so clean back then! I like his current stuff, but the voice in this one is just so pure.
