@TheAdamslol so much confusion on the web but, from everywhere i have looked, his forehand is 2.1 Tenergy 64 and his backhand is either 1.7 Curl P1r or 1.2 Grass D-Techs.
These guys are both spin masters and incredible, and I mean seriously, but personally I think a strong off player could handle either.-Primorac vs Ma Lin 2002, Boll vs Ma Lin Volkswagen cup 2010, and Joo vs Kreanga 2010.
As for Ma Lin, his loop drive is spectacular to say the least. But for someone who know how to dish it out, he can take precious little of his own medicine. Croaking in front of Joo's significantly less powerful 'surprise' drives; Meh. But the better man won. Yes.
@Jayakiran1 My experience of this is that the timing of the shots put you off. It is much harder to play against Joo's drives compared to say Wang Hao and the like. Lots of chops where you got time to prepare your own drive then suddenly the drives. That was also Chen Xinhua's game.
So intense the whole way through!! Ma Lins' paddle speed... if only he had played baseball instead of table tennis, I'm thinking the first 120 mph curveball? I've been playing for a few years now and I'm still young, and I can only play with half that much intensity for a couple points a week.
@PreppyPoser1 Wicked? Like what your hate-god thinks of you for the dirty feeling you get inside when you see hot sweaty asian men in the throws of athletic competition. Give in. Its OK. God loves you anyway, Admit what you are. Get help.
To everyone else: no disrespect, this is between me and Mr Deeply Repressed Self Loathing Homosexual here.
i really dont like ma lin, but i have to admit its a lotta fun to watch him play against defenders! hes just so fast and powerfull, its unbelivable... also, these two probably have the best footwork of all the top players in the world, its just sick how they are able to move this fast!
do u not see the korean guy is quiet when he wins most of the time.. its the chinese who exclaim.. and joo is the only defensive player in the world top 10 thats why his style is defensive
ma lin rulez, it's amazing the way that he rise up the ball being so close to the net, and with an amazing speed. And totally, he was very clever against Joo.
For the Chinese total domination in Yokohama 2009, Ma Lin was the key. It was he who defeated Kenta Matsudaira and Joo See Hyuk, the 2 greatest threat in the tournament.
in modern table tennis, defender is always weaker than offensive player. a great defender can be ranked among the best players but can't be the best player.
joo se hyuk is the example, he is the best defender player but he is ranked n°9 only.
that does not make sense..why should a denfense player should not be able to become the best player...ofc it is very hard for defense nowadays but only because the offense players are better..but why should it not be possible that a defense player gets better that all offense players??
I agree with you, asdhorst. Only 10 years ago almost nobody would have believed a defender would be in the top 20. Now more young players learn to play defense if it fits their style. Trainers are more open for defense today then 20 years ago. Thanks to Joo. He is a role model and he has a great impact to wipe out the taboo of teaching defense. The future will bring more defense players.
It is very well possible that we will see a modern defender (with strong attack) on rank 1 of the world.
It is difficult with softer recket/rubber, but Joo will be strongest if he has as strong backhand attack as forehand. I hope he'll get it as he gets older.
THere's not too many pro choppers out there, I'm not a fan of chopping, but i really enjoy Joo se hyuks skills. Very annoying for the other player and fun to watch.
I sure do, I practice it everyday, the very same traditional pen hold grip, and the modern grip used by Wang Hao, I'm also currently working on a switch method, from traditional forhand to mordern RPB style in the same loop.
Joo is great player. With good attitude and Sportmanship. I never meet player like that. even samsonov cannot compared with him. Samsonov still can angry and grumble. But I never see Joo do that. His Forehand is very good and Great Spin. But I think some time he should change paddle from pimple to inverted to shock his opponent when playing. because when inverted in backhand,he can execute Backhand TopSpin or Backhand Drive. If he can gain this technique,i think he'll be great threat for china
Yep, in this match there were 3 or 4 edgeballs, witch all ended up in points for ma because joo corrected the referee. Inverted rubbers on BH isnt possible on that level, in my oppinion. Plus theres no need for that. He can flip the blade and block with Pimples in if he needs to. Pimpled blocks and smashes are more unpreditable even on that level. (See Fukuoka Harunas BH)
Chen Weixing practised with Ma Lin before the match, that surely gave him a taste of what's coming next. But I expected Joo to use his backhand attack more.
great match, but i think kenta matsudaira had more chance of wining against ma lin than joo se hyuk, it would be great if you could upload that match man!
Ma lin looks like he trained specifically to play Joo after seeing his improvement. Ive never seen him play this well against Joo. And I've seen them play alot.
Yep, in the first 2 Sets he playes ridiculously good. Joo had no chance. But then, Joo managed to get into the game via attacking before ma lin could attack and switch to defence. He smashes a lot now with his pimples on his BH, i think thats very good for his game.
Sadly, Ma was to good in this match, but im pretty sure Joo will win again against him.
I agree with you, I also think ma lin watched more videos of Joo now to understand why he lost the last few times.
And like some others also said he is chopping now more with his forehand which is maybe not so good vs ma lin but its a good thing to have in the future than only counter attacking. Joo for rank 1 soon I hope !! :D
Yeah i know what you mean, but, sometimes you have no choice but to chop on the FH. Even for Joo its not possible to counterattack every loop. That wouldnt be good anyway, because modern defence depend on changin the speed during the point and doing things, your opponent doenst anticipate.
Rank 1 is far far away, but he definately deserves one major title in his career for revolutionizing to way players think about defensive styles.
exactly he needs to change from chopping to counter attacking sometimes its good to confuse the opponent. unfortunately rank 1 is indeed far away for him but he can definately say for himself when he quits tabletennis that he brought something new to this tabeltennis world which is amazing defencing and I really hope he will get some kind of award. Because he's a great player, plays every point at his best, great fairplay and alot of other things which can not be said for a lot of players.
Hm, i dont think there will be an award or something like that, unfortunately. WTTC '03 should have been his masterpice. The sad thing for him was that it was schlagers destiny to win the championchip (he had like 9 matchballs against him in the 3 matches before the final, got it from his book)
he uses pimples i think , they aren't made for looping i think ...
TheHeidi24 1 day ago
Joo needs to use his backhand block and loop a bit more, but that wouldnt make him a defender would it?

i want to buy the the "hard" dhs hurricane wl off + blade with "softy"-rubbers like the sriver g3 fx...
what do you think about that?
in my opinion there are two best combinations:
soft rubbers + hard blades or
hard rubbers + soft blades
