i cant help but say to my self that the people who voted down for this movie where going so fast that they meant to click thumbs up but accidentally clicked thumbs down!!!
A movie with characters named Edward and Bela that is actually entertaining, well acted, well written, well directed and is an all around great movie?! Who would've thought?!
Anybody else agree that Sarah Jessica Parker looks like a man herself @ 6:35 ?
I mean, wow!!! I know they probably did it on purpose, but she doesn't look any more feminine than Johnny does in that angora sweater and blond wig. LMAO
It was weird to hear him call Karloff that limey shit, so I checked it. Sure enough Boris Karloff was really an Englishman called William Pratt. You live and learn
If you listen to the commentary on the DVD, Burton explains that the relationship between Ed and Bela was similar to the relationship that he shared with Vincent Price while working on Edward Scissorhands.
I'm sorry Bela but your wrong- Only Boris Karloff could have played Frankenstein's monster- You played the monster in Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman- it was the worse portrayal of the monster yet- even Glenn Strange did a much better job playing Frankenstein's monster in Abbott And Costello Meet Frankenstein, and he was Sam the bartender from Gunsmoke
@willeecoyotee, He played a sex-change narrator in Glen or Glenda, you don't seem to be bothered by that. Oh, and its Burton who's "Wrong", since he wrote it not Lugosi (if you consider that to be wrong). Was it even Lugosi's fault that he wasn't a great monster? I'm pretty sure he didn't think of himself as Frankestein material anyway.
that "two people" thing is really a good point to be made. we all let a part of ourselves be seen by the world and hide away the rest of our personality that we are ashamed of.
What I dont get is why should Bela Lagosi, a man who was born in Austria-Hungary and living some years in Berlin, pronounce "Franenstein" in a english way and not german?
@tekus89 imagine your Austrian/Hungarian and living in the U.S.A and you have to entertain the people in that country. You'd favor a pronunciation that they could understand. Sure it's not technically correct but thats what they understand. So, favor the mass populace that the film is made for rather than the technically correct few that might jump in and correct you.
Yeah, i guess its better in movies to take the english pronunciation but thats a movie about his personal life. I dont think he spoke like that out of movies.
Even Karloff said Lagosis biggest mistake was not to learn and understand the language correctly.
Special features on the Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein DVD. They had the footage of the prank they pulled but stopped rolling just as Bella began to look hot-tempered and started to storm off. They continued with the story by asking a couple people who were on the set, who had studied both his and Abbott and Costello's work, and Bella's son about the story, all of which had basically the same story. At the least, one person said he screamed "Vee should not be playing ven vee are vorking!"
Bela Lugosi said Fuck you and it made me smile because he was a great actor and I can picture him doing that transition from calm and collected person to a madman in a fraction of a second.
He flipped his shit on Abbott and Costello when they pulled a prank during shooting of Meet Frankenstein. When he learned acting in the Old Country, they only had so much film to shoot with, so he was accustomed to doing single takes. When they ruined his take, he fucking lost it.
I won't argue with you that his films are an acquired taste at best, but Ed Wood's film's are like an abstract piece of art, beautifully cheesy to some while stupid to others
is there a reason there are roaming bison behind bela lugosi at the end? in a transvestite film? come to think of it, what could the purpose of lugosi's character be in that movie?
The bison are behind Lugosi there because... well, that's how it is in the actual "Glen or Glenda". Lugosi's character exists in that movie because Ed Wood was able to hire Lugosi and needed to fit him into his transvestite movie, somehow. "Plan 9 from Outer Space" may be Ed Wood's most famous movie, but "Glen or Glenda" is ten times weirder, and possibly even more unintentionally hilarious.
so basically lugosi was crammed in because he was a big name that ed needed. and i get that the bison were in the original, but im asking why would the real wood have put the bison in for no reason?
Remember how Lugosi is supposed to be sort of a God-like figure who is overseeing things? Well, he says "Pull the string!" and the bison start stampeding, because, well, he's the Puppetmaster and he just pulled their string. Stupid, maybe, but that's the best I can figure it. Why bison? Because Wood had some stock footage of stampeding bison that he could use for free to pad out the run time. The answer to most questions involving Wood's choices is "It was cheap."
The great thing about Lugosi was that no matter how crappy the script was, he always acted it as though it was the best script in the world! The way his career ended was really quite sad considering how big of star he was in the early '30's! No disrespect to Ed Wood though, at least he recognized Bela's talent!
weird i wonder how ed's imagination worked i mean who could someone write the dialouge in the films or the stories of it. at least he got legosi on the screen again. rip wood & logosi. lol "pull the string.pull the string." best line in an ed wood film.
Ed Wood wasn't a terrible director and his movies weren't BAD. just low budget. With more money, he could have done more. Trust me, if you want to see cinematic CRAP, go see "The Spirit". Now THAT was an hour and a half I'm never getting back!
i personally think his movies were crap. its not an insult, its just an obvious statement: they were crap. HOWEVER, they do keep you entertained, albeit on a more comedic side. even though they suck, ed was treating every movie like citizen kane and had passion for cinema, which you have to respect in the man. he always looked on the bright side, unlike uwe boll, who'd rather bitch and fight his critics in boxing matches than be proud of his work.
i agree with you - his movies were crap! But we gotta respect him for his passion and, like you said, for treating every movie of his like citizen kane - he loved his work and always wanted to tell a story to the audiences... he didn't have the skills but he was a good filmmaker in my opinion and he earns my respect without a doubt!
Agree on the Spirit but the man barely took a second take that's not because he was low budget, but because he was lazy and focused on just finishing the script, and that dialogue...jesus. Thats bad entertaining but just bad.
Allthough the real Bela would never curse like that, it's hilarious to see Landau (he blooddy brilliant!) go bananas like that! I just love "Bullshit! I'm ready now, roll the camera!", and how he swings his arms around!
That line was weird, seeing the scene of the film itself would be just laughable.
But not only do you get Landau living the character of the real actor, it's Howard Shore's score. That music in the background is such an aid that you actually feel the chills of imtimidation of something that you could regularly laugh at.
It's like we're seeing the entire shoot take place from Ed Wood's view. "Perfect!" (under gasp of bewilderment)

But not only do you get Landau living the character of the real actor, it's Howard Shore's score. That music in the background is such an aid that you actually feel the chills of imtimidation of something that you could regularly laugh at.
