The way Shogun won this fight was not allowing Machida to reset his offense. Usually guys will throw two or three shots at Machida, miss, the back off. This allows Machida to reset and counter using his speed. Shogun just kept coming at him and hit him on the fourth, fifth, maybe even sixth strike. That was the difference. That and Machida didn't enjoy his usual massive advantage in speed. That's ignoring any mental aspect. Watching them walk out again, it's obvious who wants it more.
Let's just hope Shogun is back to him prime and will dominate like his PRIDE days... However, his injuries and lay-offs mean that I don't it'll happen.

What was so shocking guy, Shogun and his camp all those guys go hard in crazy heat..Machdia drinks piss and lets father time pass for a counter..Shogun has always pushed a really fast pace, when he fought Forrest he was dehydrated from the weight cut but still went until he was choked..with 7-9 seconds left in the final round...What was so surprising? I thought it would have been either shogun by sub, or machida by knockout. Machida didn't look comfortable and I think this time Shoguns plan was to throw his hands, and back off his kicks. Every karate masters falls doing atleast one of their films. When they come back, they are twice as dangerous and Shogan will have a much tougher fight next time. Unlike Fedor, you need to lose to improve against a fighter that has the perfect recipe against a fighter like Lyoto.

It's not that Machida made a mistake. Shogun faced Machida once already, Machida likes to leap in and strike quickly with his superior speed. Shogun got the timing down from the first fight. When you leap in, with a fighter almost as fast as you, but far superior in strength, you take chances. Not to mention Shogun was out for blood after his loss. This kid was considered the best 205er in the world in his day, there's no luck against him.
I knew he would be on top since he first stepped in the ufc...even after the forrest lose....ive been a shogun fan since 04, the KO didn't surprise me one bit......machida is a good fighter but he was hyped up way to much, shogun had a long list of wins over people with big names before stepping into the ufc.....i don't see anyone beating him for a while....we are now in the shogun era.......not the machida era.

He did get 2 takedowns in this fight and did land a couple good knees with a head punch. But Machida is too much a striker and couldn't capitalize on the ground. Right now, I think Silva's the only one with a chance against Rua, if he bumps up a weight class.

100% karate vs. 100% muoy thai. When I was growing up karate was the martial art that was everywhere. It hasn't withstood time because it's a rigid system (there-for nothing like Bruce Lee). The fighters of this generation weren't used to seeing karate so it was mysterious. I believe now that it was figured out how to beat it, it's once again an outdated and rigid, easily beaten system. Machida didn't miss that punch. Machida just fucked up. When Machida was dumb enough to decide to actually lead with that reverse punch instead of keep using it as his counter, Shogun took advantage with a boxing cross (counter) of his own. The cross in itself gives the head movement to dodge the straight and well you saw the rest. I'm a fan of Machida but that was a bad move.
Great analysis! I think both fighters had very positive high risk gameplans, and were seeking savage knockouts. Machida knew Rua would step up the aggression this time, as he may have been lucky last time in a high stakes chess match! Funny how once again, the fight game proves anyone can get beat! If u have a chin, you can get beat! Rua has the blueprint, others will follow. Rua may have the answer to the Anderson Silva riddle too based on this!
It's not about game plan. Shogun has proven in the second fight again that he is simply the better fighter. It was obviously that Machida didn't knew what to do against the pressure of Shogun.

@Xytos I wouldn't say it was lucky at all and it wasn't a clip either, it was a solid right to the side of Machida's head and knocked him down. Machida initialized an attack with that straight left of his and Shogun countered it with an overhand right, and as said Rua immideately got the mount and Lyoto attempted to stop the onslaught but was unable to and was put away. Machida just played into Shogun's hands and was too aggressive and he payed for it.
@Locklear1989 it was a clip, a full-on shot to the side would have easily KO'ed him (especially since shogun's punches were pretty vicious in that fight). if you look at the beginning of the fight lyoto landed a much better punch against shogun causing him to throw his hands up and almost fall over. but lyoto decided not to continue.

The way Shogun won this fight was not allowing Machida to reset his offense. Usually guys will throw two or three shots at Machida, miss, the back off. This allows Machida to reset and counter using his speed. Shogun just kept coming at him and hit him on the fourth, fifth, maybe even sixth strike. That was the difference. That and Machida didn't enjoy his usual massive advantage in speed. That's ignoring any mental aspect. Watching them walk out again, it's obvious who wants it more.

What was so shocking guy, Shogun and his camp all those guys go hard in crazy heat..Machdia drinks piss and lets father time pass for a counter..Shogun has always pushed a really fast pace, when he fought Forrest he was dehydrated from the weight cut but still went until he was choked..with 7-9 seconds left in the final round...What was so surprising? Other than you know nothing about MMA.

I thought it would have been either shogun by sub, or machida by knockout. Machida didn't look comfortable and I think this time Shoguns plan was to throw his hands, and back off his kicks. Last time Machida got lucky with shogun throwing hand and then not finishing with hands but instead going back to his kicks. I love them both good job guys can't wait to see the 3rd one.

Every karate masters falls doing atleast one of their films. When they come back, they are twice as dangerous and Shogan will have a much tougher fight next time. Unlike Fedor, you need to lose to improve against a fighter that has the perfect recipe against a fighter like Lyoto.

It's not that Machida made a mistake. Shogun faced Machida once already, Machida likes to leap in and strike quickly with his superior speed. Shogun got the timing down from the first fight. When you leap in, with a fighter almost as fast as you, but far superior in strength, you take chances. Not to mention Shogun was out for blood after his loss. This kid was considered the best 205er in the world in his day, there's no luck against him.

I knew he would be on top since he first stepped in the ufc...even after the forrest lose....ive been a shogun fan since 04, the KO didn't surprise me one bit......machida is a good fighter but he was hyped up way to much, shogun had a long list of wins over people with big names before stepping into the ufc.....i don't see anyone beating him for a while....we are now in the shogun era.......not the machida era.

I believe Machida said that there's no way his karate could overcome. Shogun's muay thai. So he decided to try to make it a BJJ match. Wrong decision, Shogun has black belt level BJJ. @404Trucho Machida has beat a few strong fighters, but not nearly as many as Shogun. So you're right, Machida's not been tested quite yet. But I also think Machida still stands a chance. He did get 2 takedowns in this fight and did land a couple good knees with a head punch. But Machida is too much a striker and couldn't capitalize on the ground. Right now, I think Silva's the only one with a chance against Rua, if he bumps up a weight class.

If you take Shogun down there is a serious chance he will either:
a) Get it back to the feet
b) Sweep you
c) Submit you
A fighter would need to have a VERY good groundgame to beat Shogun on the mat. Arona and lil'nog couldn't do it.

Anyway I hope Machida will come back,but of course hopefully he will back to his roots of the over defensive 'adapted karate'', which has bring him so far. His game is counter strikes, if the fight was all like the first left hook he connected it would be perfect. Shogun has an awesome chin, but sooner or later he would drop. I don't think he should trains wrestling he's take defense is very good and that is all he needs actually. Anyway the credit for Shogun he is a great fighter, respect f him

@vls174 Yeah I was really shocked by this Fight, No MMA fan in their Right mind would of predicted that Machida would be Finished Instantly in 2 Fuckin Minutes, Wow that's pretty much like if someone Back in the 80's Fought Tyson and Deafeted him in two minutes, when I saw the fight Machida did not look like his Stylized Technical fighter we were used to seeing, He Did take him down 2 times but that was about it then afterwards shogun Just Layed him out. congrats to shogun

As you and a lot of people said Machida gone so aggressive, he just did it very wrong, you know. He totally underestimated Shogun KO power, he perfectly walked in Shogun area, that exchanges with Shogun was crazy and the shit was predicted. I think he was kinda nervous, insecure, probably by taking this imbecile strategy on the ring, He probably got in the shit because of the pressure over him, kinda pressure of people saying he wasn't Champ and he had to do more than that. well dont forget that back in the pride days shogun was thought to be the best light heavyweight at the time until he got injured then having 2 knees surgery which is why he was gassing.

100% karate vs. 100% muoy thai. When I was growing up karate was the martial art that was everywhere. It hasn't withstood time because it's a rigid system (there-for nothing like Bruce Lee). The fighters of this generation weren't used to seeing karate so it was mysterious. I believe now that it was figured out how to beat it, it's once again an outdated and rigid, easily beaten system. shogun rua is the better fighter out of these two... almost everyone thought shogun rua won the first time too. Not the bad fans thou... Machida went out of the octagon with broken ribs and a bloody face. You couldnt even see the damage afflicted on shogun .Not that it was much.. Good shogun didnt leave it to the judges this time and just knocked him the fuck out in the first... go shogun rua the new LHW champion. and fuck you machida fans that say otherwise...

Machida didn't miss that punch. Machida just fucked up. When Machida was dumb enough to decide to actually lead with that reverse punch instead of keep using it as his counter, Shogun took advantage with a boxing cross (counter) of his own. The cross in itself gives the head movement to dodge the straight and well you saw the rest. I'm a fan of Machida but that was a bad move.

Great analysis! I think both fighters had very positive high risk gameplans, and were seeking savage knockouts. Machida knew Rua would step up the aggression this time, as he may have been lucky last time in a high stakes chess match! Funny how once again, the fight game proves anyone can get beat! If u have a chin, you can get beat! Rua has the blueprint, others will follow. Rua may have the answer to the Anderson Silva riddle too based on this!

It's not about game plan. Shogun has proven in the second fight again that he is simply the better fighter. It was obviously that Machida didn't knew what to do against the pressure of Shogun.
P.S.: Even karate champions say that karate is not good choice for fighting in MMA.

I has very disappointed with machida performance. He had the wrong game plan, why has machida so aggressive? Its very ironic that machida got KO by a counter punch, unbelievable. Old machida would never be in a position to get hit like that....

i was really disappointed. machida was doing really well and landed several punches (definitely one) that would have won the fight, but his style is always to come in quick and leave so he lost his opportunity. rua on the other hand managed to clip machida and capitalized on it with everything he had. i would say it was a very lucky KO.
with that sad, machida has never lost, and he obviously didn't take his previous match seriously. he needs to learn from itn patch up the weakness in his style.

@Xytos I wouldn't say it was lucky at all and it wasn't a clip either, it was a solid right to the side of Machida's head and knocked him down. Machida initialized an attack with that straight left of his and Shogun countered it with an overhand right, and as said Rua immideately got the mount and Lyoto attempted to stop the onslaught but was unable to and was put away. Machida just played into Shogun's hands and was too aggressive and he payed for it.

@Locklear1989 it was a clip, a full-on shot to the side would have easily KO'ed him (especially since shogun's punches were pretty vicious in that fight). if you look at the beginning of the fight lyoto landed a much better punch against shogun causing him to throw his hands up and almost fall over. but lyoto decided not to continue.

I just noticed something after watching the fight again, watch when they are up against the cage, Shogun threw an elbow and it hit Machida clean, then when they seperate you can clearly see Machida trips as he is possibly dazed, and after that point Machida just doesn't look right, comes in with a knee and then tries a lucky punch.
Shogun knew he was dazed, and what a KO. :)

Shoguns BJJ is the best in LHW and probally all of MMA , and u seem to forget shogun was coming off of knee surgerys when he fought coleman, forrest etc..
