The bit about being confused with a "special" person... that actually happened. I was trying to get a spot in a show. The host talked with the owners of the place and they felt while I was funny, they didn't think their AUDIENCE would like it. They also asked the host if I was "special". When the host told me this, THAT'S what fueled me to rewrite the routine.
Thanks! This is a bit that took about a year to perfect. I did at least 10-15 revisions before I came up with something that was funny from start to finish. I wanted to avoid doing "a lecture on aspergers with jokes thrown in". I tried doing a bit about explaining what aspergers is and the characteristics. It didn't work. Later it hit me that I should joke about the MISCONCEPTIONS of aspergers and people's ignorance. That worked well.
