shit I practice 6 hours a day FOCUSED. Marty, Joe satriani, some other people too that are really great musicians and talk about only pacticing an hour a day... You know its total bullshit, they definitely spent WAY more time than that.. so why are they preaching it? I just dont get it.
My god, I swear he heard me say this same thing and then use it here!!! He is the man, I wish we could meet and chill over some good Japanese beer and discuss music.
what if what i want to hear is really really difficult? I'mnot gonna practice easy stuff cause thats not what i want to do.
Also, the reason Steve Vai practiced 5 hours a day is because by the time he was 18 he was already a professional stage performer with Whitesnake. It was his job to be good tt guitar; he didnt have to do anything else.
@MylesLouis Personally I think 6 hours is the limit. My average practice time is around 2 hours per day, and usually once a week doubling that. Occasionally it's good to practice a really long time, but it's better to work on things that both you want to work on (or hear) and things that will broaden your playing. Doing the Steve Vai thing is just overkill.
So true about listening and learning songs or tech within your capabilites. The first 2 or 3 yrs of learning the guitar i was constantly on a downer. All i listened and liked to listen to was stuff like Megadeth, Dream Theatre etc pieces that was so far beyond my skill level. Great advice Marty, i was i had seen this vid 20 yrs ago lol :)
let me rephrase 1:05 - 1:15 "concentrate on the music that you like, if it's Megadeth of course youre going to have to learn simpler things along the way"
This is fine... if guitar is your career not your hobby. I don't want guitar to be a chore, so I do what I like. Yes I work on repetitive exercises to build speed or technique, but most of the time i just want to noodle around and improv without any pressures or rules. If my practice was as strict as Marty's I'd have quit years ago. But as it is, friends in music compliment my playing while I'm busy relaxing from engineering, each to his/her own.
@TheSyuFan smoke on the water is more complicated than most poeple think if u want to learn the hole song but the intro riff is easy and the solo is frikken awesome but hard
In tip 55 he seems to repeat the point over and over using different words. He keeps saying the same thing but using different language in tip 55. I realised that Marty reiterates the same point throughout tip 55 but with different phrasings. Friedman tends to state tip number fifty-five several times but in various ways. The second tip of this video (55) seems to be repeated by the person saying it (Marty).
@SnollaSnax No but in a practice you should focus on improving your skills. not just noodling. which will in time strengthen your guitar skills but in the long run is the slower way.
@tylerzipperer i agree with that for sure, there is so much to be discovered on individualistic expressive level through noodling. when i used to teach i would encourage it :)
@MetallicXXX9 getting back to the point, its still irresponsible advice telling people to only practice what they want to. I understand what he is referencing to when he talks of ppl playing extreme scales for hours (ahh, uni) but for a 13yr old kid to see this and think "i dont have to play this scale shit, im just gonna play 'come as you are' for 25 mins and then solo on the top E string for 5 minutes and im done" that kid will regret not working harder later in life, if he wants to be a pro!
@danablett I think he tries to say things in general, of course if your aim is to become professional musician, you're gonna need more than just 1 hour a day, and I'm sure Marty knows it. That's why he never mentions anything about music in terms of career
@MetallicXXX9 yes, i am 25. yes i play in bands that play at weddings. also bars, nightclubs, outdoor festivals, stadiums... its called being a professional musician. (definition of professional musician = 100% of income derives from performance, session work, teaching, arranging, producing etc... earning at least the national average wage) i play original music, but i also play a TON of cover bands.
I never said that learning scales is necessary for creating good music
@danablett but i think it is incredibly important towards your development as a guitarist. If i could have my life over, i would have committed to heaps more serious scale and mod playing from a much younger age. jazz, country, shredding, spanish, classical.... all heavily rely on a guitarist having a great fret board knowledge to play successfully. learning scales develops a muscle memory so that you dont have to over-think when attempting to execute difficult passages, rather your fingers...
@danablett know instinctively where to go to create the sound you are thinking. Contrary to popular belief among hobbyist musicians, its not all about "feeling good". great music comes from great musicians. music is a live long learning experience and a discipline. but anyway... who cares. dont practice scales. let me know when you 'make it'.
The more I practice my instrument, the more I can't help but think this is such valuable price. 1 hour of practice time a day is plenty to get done. We can only focus on something for so long before our energy depletes so you will have to take breaks.
rubbish! this advice is a teacher's worst nightmare.... "just play the music you want to play" dont tell that to a teen... they will never practice scales or modes... then they are screwed when they are 20... his first and second pieces of advice contradict each other.
@danablett Yes, he's a retard when it comes to advice. I've heard him say that practicing etudes or doing exercises is worthless. Does he actually think everyone will believe that shit? Sure, some retards will but the rest of us know better. I would love for him to tell me he never practiced any exercises for techinique. Great guitar player but he has no business giving advice.
Think about it, if you don't listen to Marty and spend endless hours practicing the technical and theoretical aspects of music alone, you'll start sounding like Chris Broderick or Rusty Cooley, or God forbid those wankers that post videos on "world record guitar speeds".
@RebornGuitarLearner Wait, I don't get it. What's wrong with Chris Broderick's playing style? He plays very well. I've read that during the summer time in his teen years, he would practice something like 8 hours a day with guitar, piano, and violin.
@corndogers564 Well, fair enough. To each his/her own. But just compare how Marty plays to how Chris plays. Chris might be able to do some really really scary things across the neck, but Marty really has that personal touch on top of having some sick chops. It's that visceral feel that really matters, not so much how fast or technically you can play.
@corndogers564 If you really like what Chris and those other guys do, power to ya. Don't listen to a schmuck like me. Everybody's different. I'm just saying that you can get the same benefit, if not more, out of 1-1.5 hours of focused practice than 8 hours of it.
Even if you're disciplined, 8 hours is still way too much. The brain can only retain so much and stay alert. Check out articles about learning though and see for yourself. Maybe I'm wrong! But I just speak from experience.
@RebornGuitarLearner Oh ok! I just wanted you to clarify what you meant. I definitely get your point, especially when it comes to practice. After all, it's quality over quantity. No one can really focus on anything for 8 hours even if they had that leisure. I can also relate to your experience as well. The brain can only take in so much information at a time. I'd like to find these articles as well.
This is so TRUE. Some of you have lost track of what music is too. Music should be FUN. And the ultimate measure of an artist is to make people FEEL something, not how quickly you can do 16th note triplet runs or how many modes you can squeeze into an open harmonic environment.
Honestly, if I could go back to High School when I learned guitar, I would've heeded Marty's words for sure. I would've had so much more fun, and maybe would've been better at my favourite style.
That is some of the best advice I have ever heard for practising guitar. As straight forward as it sounds I have done the exact opposite and gone for the harder material first rather than start simple. Thankyou Marty ! :D
@maidenizeyou okay i don't wanna start a kirk vs marty argument here and theres no point in even arguing cause we all know who's better maybe except for you, you kinda seem like a Megadeth hater.
@Ghostman7777 Try a 14 year old who knows eruption. I love marty friedman and i am not trolling kirk hammett is my favorite guitar player and i was defending him so fuck you.
@maidenizeyou Eruption is hardcore newbish, anybody can jerk off a guitar, not very many people can play it. Try six string sweeps and eight finger tapping than brag.
I had a phase where i became convinced i had to learn jazz theory and fusion and sit with a metronome for hours to become a better player. Sure, maybe it helped. But I didn't have fun after a while. I will always love playing METAL.
@die did you fucking listen to a word he said you fucking bitch. If you are at a certain level, are you going to bypass all the fundamentals and start learning King Crimson, and Alan Holdworth, when you have no idea what the fuck you are doing and you can't play it? You need to learn songs that gradually get you to that level, you don't skip it all and start out at the highest difficulty. You are an idiot aren't you? Get a life. Marty is almost 50 years old, and know more then you ever will
He is so right about practicing the music that you like. A guy I know can rip on the chromatic scale, it's the only single note drill that he does; because he was told that it is the best thing to condition all of the fingers; but he cannot play a single solo. If he would have taken the Rhoads solo that he wanted to play twenty years ago; broke it down to small exercises and did that rather than noodle on the chromatic, he might be able to play the Rhoads thing by now.
He said that I should find something easier to play in the specific area of music that I want to play... But I want to play Speed Metal specifically... How the fuck do you find easy-to-play Speed Metal?!?! XD
Seriously though... What's the difference between training one hour every day and training eight hours straight once a week?
You must realize you are training your Brain and hand/arm Muscles (mental and physical) as well as trying to learn and play music (sound and emotion). The one hour a day is better because you are "training" your brain that the intricate movements you are trying to learn are so important because you intend on using it often. Start SLOW to teach your brain and muscles then, with a metronome, gradually speed up. Look up "muscle memory" and "brain training" topics.
@Shining4Dawn By playing an hour every day, your fingers, wrist, arm and brain are developing a pattern. If you practice for 8 hours in one day, this time spent isn't stored up for the rest of the week. The next day, you need to recondition yourself with more practice, otherwise, you regress slightly. Even a professional would not normally let his guitar sit for a couple of weeks and expect to be top notch without practicing a few hours to get back into form.
@Shining4Dawn A lot actually. It's been suggested that humans learn better and retain information more when managed in smaller chunks at a time with breaks in between.
come on Marty everyone knows you are amazing at what you do, but that does not mean that someone who does play his fingers to the bone while the t.v. is on or whatever other distractions are going on that they are wasting time. they are simply becoming closer to let out whatever they are feeling without thinking about anything in-particular....music theory is a map for the mind, not for the soul.
practicing for 30 minutes i could understand in hectic busy day.. but i usually have a couple hours to spare atleast so i use it all..not because i strictly believe you need to practice for hours a day but because i enjoy playing guitar so much that i could easily spend hours on it. thats how i always got good. not focusing on getting good, but focusing on making what i play sound how i want it to sound, soaking in all i can from learning songs and learning new things along the way
not everybody practice the same i warm up one hour and then i go for the things that i want to master, 30 min is extremely a short time, hi said that cause hi knows every thing that hi need to know
I have been playing guitar for about 3 years now. I have concentrated playing the music that I like, and I play about 30 mins a day. Playing Megadeth is the best finger excercise ever.
@andresoacuna She probably gave a lot of hand-jobs, also she only really seems to be very good at tapping so maybe she has had some "me-time" in the past as well... XD
Marty's right! Practicing 6hrs a day can make learning to play an instrument a labor intensive bore. When people do that, when they finally get proficient, they go out into the music world thinking everything is owed to them.
"What? You mean I'm not in the band? Do you realize how hard I worked at this?"
Marty's logic will have people learning and having fun. Good stuff will happen when they aren't looking.
I'd listen to him since he was in Cacophony and Megadeth! Thanks for the prime advice Marty, I'm gonna go grab my Jackson Kelly and learn the Painkiller solo
@uofm97 he's an adult and rock star making a funny adult joke about wankin off. you know even if you don't put a ton of effort/time in, its still better than spending all day jacking off..
i don't think you carnt play 6 hours a day if you wanted to, he's not saying practise less, he's saying be focused, ie a half hour focused learning something is better than 6 hours wanking around in front of your tv, true!
However 6 hours focused is better than a half hour focused! he's not saying practise less, he's saying you need to focus your practise time!
i don't think you carnt play 6 hours a day if you wanted to, he's not saying practise less, he's saying be focused, ie a half hour focused learning something is better than 6 hours wanking around in front of your tv, true!

@TarbleSauce - idk man sweeps are a good techneque to learn man. but yea i know what u mean, look and herman lee from faggotforce, hes a prime example of a show off, people who dont know any better really think hes a real shredder. HE SUX!!!! but look at jeff loomis, listen to miles of machines or this godless endeavor, theres some intense sweeps in that.
I think this is why Marty's playing degenerated so badly technique-wise. Granted, if you dont like playing technical stuff theres no point in learning it or practicing to get it. But if you wanna learn some Cacophony stuff cuz you like it, I dont think an hour a day is helping... Besides Jason Becker practiced all day anyways. Thats why 17 yr old Jason could keep up and eventually outplay a 25 yr old Marty.
Eh... The more you know the more you can apply. You can't diss any jazz musicians who take their time knowing a fuck load of chords. It only helps and gives you a better advantage.
For example, if you ever join a jazz band in school or college, they pretty much label a shit load of chords, one after another, and expect you to know shapes across the neck so if you don't know more chords than the average guitarist, you are fucked.
@Oceano3333 what he is saying pretty much is : if you wanna get better at guitar.. dont learn useless stuff you will never use.. learn what you need to. when practicing dont multi-task (i.e playing guitar and watching T.V.) just focus on doing what youre doing. focus on your practicing, shut everything else in the room Off and everything else in your life out of your head and just put your mind to the guitar and techniques or chords or whatever it is you are learning or teaching yourself.

Can't emphasize this lesson enough.
I practiced on a strict 4-6 hour regimen almost daily. Chromatics to a metronome, strict economy exercises.
Talk about join pain, inflammation and an unpleasant experience, with 2 days of downtime as a result.
Much better to have a really focused 1 hour session. Pulling a "Vai"(which i find his claim to be complete horseshit) will only injure yourself.

I had a phase where i became convinced i had to learn jazz theory and fusion and sit with a metronome for hours to become a better player. Sure, maybe it helped. But I didn't have fun after a while. I will always love playing METAL.

Yeah, Marty, Forming New Synaptic-Connections within the Brain, means Nothing.. @_@, rolls eyes...
diekikedie99 1 year ago
@die did you fucking listen to a word he said you fucking bitch. If you are at a certain level, are you going to bypass all the fundamentals and start learning King Crimson, and Alan Holdworth, when you have no idea what the fuck you are doing and you can't play it? You need to learn songs that gradually get you to that level, you don't skip it all and start out at the highest difficulty. You are an idiot aren't you? Get a life. Marty is almost 50 years old, and know more then you ever will

i sit down wank off 6 hours a day
FatKidCookie 1 year ago 3
He is so right about practicing the music that you like. A guy I know can rip on the chromatic scale, it's the only single note drill that he does; because he was told that it is the best thing to condition all of the fingers; but he cannot play a single solo. If he would have taken the Rhoads solo that he wanted to play twenty years ago; broke it down to small exercises and did that rather than noodle on the chromatic, he might be able to play the Rhoads thing by now.

i fucking lmao'd when he said sitting around wanking off
MolesMalone 1 year ago 2
He said that I should find something easier to play in the specific area of music that I want to play... But I want to play Speed Metal specifically... How the fuck do you find easy-to-play Speed Metal?!?! XD
Seriously though... What's the difference between training one hour every day and training eight hours straight once a week?
Shining4Dawn 1 year ago
@Shining4Dawn:
Look up "muscle memory" and "brain training" topics.
catmansdream 1 year ago 2
@Shining4Dawn By playing an hour every day, your fingers, wrist, arm and brain are developing a pattern. If you practice for 8 hours in one day, this time spent isn't stored up for the rest of the week. The next day, you need to recondition yourself with more practice, otherwise, you regress slightly. Even a professional would not normally let his guitar sit for a couple of weeks and expect to be top notch without practicing a few hours to get back into form.
1badsteed 1 year ago
@Shining4Dawn A lot actually. It's been suggested that humans learn better and retain information more when managed in smaller chunks at a time with breaks in between.
MrVoiceofreason123 1 year ago
come on Marty everyone knows you are amazing at what you do, but that does not mean that someone who does play his fingers to the bone while the t.v. is on or whatever other distractions are going on that they are wasting time. they are simply becoming closer to let out whatever they are feeling without thinking about anything in-particular....music theory is a map for the mind, not for the soul.

practicing for 30 minutes i could understand in hectic busy day.. but i usually have a couple hours to spare atleast so i use it all..not because i strictly believe you need to practice for hours a day but because i enjoy playing guitar so much that i could easily spend hours on it. thats how i always got good. not focusing on getting good, but focusing on making what i play sound how i want it to sound, soaking in all i can from learning songs and learning new things along the way

I have been playing guitar for about 3 years now. I have concentrated playing the music that I like, and I play about 30 mins a day. Playing Megadeth is the best finger excercise ever.

I agree with the part about learning something simple at first that you like. There's nothing like black sabbath or judas priest to get you going :)

What do you exactly mean by wanking off when playing guitar ?
I'm serious .

@ragrytakr "Wanking" usually refers to mindlessly playing random crap, showing off with no purpose BUT to show off, that sort of thing.

@uofm97 he's an adult and rock star making a funny adult joke about wankin off. you know even if you don't put a ton of effort/time in, its still better than spending all day jacking off..
jaguarlord1994 1 year ago
@jaguarlord1994 Yeah, I get it. EIther way, 6 hours of slapping the salami would most likely result in rugburn on the palm of your hand. lol

i don't think you carnt play 6 hours a day if you wanted to, he's not saying practise less, he's saying be focused, ie a half hour focused learning something is better than 6 hours wanking around in front of your tv, true!
However 6 hours focused is better than a half hour focused! he's not saying practise less, he's saying you need to focus your practise time!

0:55 Completely useless, i.e. sweep picking. Its all for showing off and it sounds like shit.

@TarbleSauce
It doesn't sound like shit if it's nicely incorporated io the melody.
ragrytakr 1 year ago
@TarbleSauce - idk man sweeps are a good techneque to learn man. but yea i know what u mean, look and herman lee from faggotforce, hes a prime example of a show off, people who dont know any better really think hes a real shredder. HE SUX!!!! but look at jeff loomis, listen to miles of machines or this godless endeavor, theres some intense sweeps in that.
partynaked11 1 year ago
Man... I don't think it's humanly possible for me to wank off for 6 hours... I would be shooting dust by then.... Oh! We're talking about guitar?
simpleben09 1 year ago 4
I think this is why Marty's playing degenerated so badly technique-wise. Granted, if you dont like playing technical stuff theres no point in learning it or practicing to get it. But if you wanna learn some Cacophony stuff cuz you like it, I dont think an hour a day is helping... Besides Jason Becker practiced all day anyways. Thats why 17 yr old Jason could keep up and eventually outplay a 25 yr old Marty.

Watching TV is great when doing really boring stuff like going up and down on the "alternate picking training scale". :D
J0hannski 1 year ago
Eh... The more you know the more you can apply. You can't diss any jazz musicians who take their time knowing a fuck load of chords. It only helps and gives you a better advantage.
For example, if you ever join a jazz band in school or college, they pretty much label a shit load of chords, one after another, and expect you to know shapes across the neck so if you don't know more chords than the average guitarist, you are fucked.

can someone transcribe this.? because i'll only understand if I read it, my english is very poor :/
Oceano3333 1 year ago
@Oceano3333 what he is saying pretty much is : if you wanna get better at guitar.. dont learn useless stuff you will never use.. learn what you need to. when practicing dont multi-task (i.e playing guitar and watching T.V.) just focus on doing what youre doing. focus on your practicing, shut everything else in the room Off and everything else in your life out of your head and just put your mind to the guitar and techniques or chords or whatever it is you are learning or teaching yourself.
