I don't really have a bridge? I can sing a B2 to a G#5 and i never feel like i am switching voices... I don't try to over use my voice so i keep it all at the same volume. Maybe that's why.
I dont really get the head voice thing. Should you like begin using it from your very last chest voice tone (example: a middle A) on, or should you kinda introduce it some tones before your last chest tone?
I dont know if I should kinda strain for like hitting my top A in chest voice, or should I switch to head voice even though I can cover some of those tones with chest voice?
Out of all the videos out there this is the one that really helps me! Tho im doing everything ur saying and it still feels like when im using head voice it still feels like falsetto i dunno if im doing it right. maybe im just not used to it...
Yes, exactly, every time I see one of these videos I like to reminisce about taking a nice warm heavy shit. Practice this technique when you're pinching a loaf.
with the last part, keeping larynx low, and using fry to get higher, i get higher but it sounds like my cords dont close and have crackles , does it get cleaner with practice?
so far this one of the best instructional drills for male voice in you tube,If you want to sing high note but you have to practice every day,and Avoid cold liquids
Well if your speaking voice is raspy, you're probably fucked. But if not, most likely there's either tension in your larynx, or you're blowing too much air through your cords.
Try doing this: hum a comfortable note in your range, and make sure to feel it buzzing in your nose. Relax your throat around the hum. Then go from the hum to 'ee', eh', 'ah' oh', 'oo', keeping the sound sharp and focused. If you have trouble singing a clear 'ee', say 'ee' in your speaking voice, and get the feeling of that sharp focused sound, then sing on the same sensation.
This exercise should eliminate loose air, and bring a nice legato quality to your voice --a very 'commercial' sound!
what he is essentially saying (and didn't need to take 9min to do so) is if you feel tension in your voice as you reach your first bridge - narrow the vowel and add an "uh" vowel sound to it (which keeps the larynx low) or add some pharyngeal resonance (cat meows) to bring the tone up into the nose. Experiment with both and see which one works best for you.
What he doesn't say is that these are two different approaches designed for different types of vowels.
And what YOU'RE basically saying is that these are methods to align all vowels to have both space (that of ah, eh and oh) with ring (as of ee and oo) ;-)
One always ends up appealing to bel canto tenets in the end, lol
Vowels in their context will dictate the resonantor. Chest, pharyngeal or a combo of both.
vowel diction is mainly determined by the style of music - In Classical the vowels are more pure, rounder and darker. In Rock the vowels tend to splat more, be brighter and wider in sound.
Yeah, there's more of a 'whine' to rock singing, which gives it its hard metallic edge. It's a bit like operatic singing, but without the depth of sound; the 'roundness', as you put it.
One more thing - do you know CVT techniqe (Complete Vocal Technique)? They have a different point of view when talking about singing. They're using modes like Neutral,Curbing (these two are similar to SS terminology) and Overrdrive (which is some kind of pulling up chest...).
"Overdrive" in CVT is simply singing louder than normal.
"Curbing" is just that - curbing or holding back the sound with more compression, "Neutral" is singing in a normal "Neutral" state, and Edge is the term they use instead of "belting" .
In cvt that means: the false vocal cords get closer to each other but they do NOT approximate like in distortion. But like when you moan. Maybe also something is happening under the vocal cords but they are still investigating. I've asked 3 teachers and they all said that that's what happens. I'm not a fan of the mode-thinking but cvt has some new stuff like the hold recently.
That's it dude. I didn't find anyone who could explain it better that you did it! Basing on my experience I have to say that sometimes it's harder to teach someone how to support (breathe) correctly rather than crossing the bridges and finding the mix:). Singing is and should be easy but holding those high and powerefull notes requires stamina!:)
DUDE YOU ARE A WEAPON!! please keep these coming!!!!!!!!! I am getting all kinds of ridiculous advice from teachers but these are concise and in easily understandable methods. Any advice tip vids you can do, are highly wanted !! :D thanks again
dude...i have been trying to figure out compression from all my teachers and I FINALLY got it from you!!!!
My teachers kept saying that I kept loosing compression as I went up the scale. I felt it too but I couldn't do anything to change it coz I couldn't understand.
is this the kind of stuff that should help me discover a head voice? it seems like i pull up chest and chest can only turn into a light girls falsetto by way of cracking, and if i try to blend it sounds like i have tonsilitis like a bad fry
By the way, i'd rate this video 6 stars out of 5, if i could. You have a great future ahead of you. In no time, you'll be coaching the stars. But don't forget about us little people when you make it to the celebrity platform. The pro's could learn a thing or two from you. Brilliant, just brilliant!!! God bless your work and sacrifice. Please continue to post more of these videos, especially about that 2nd bridge you mentioned. Excellent stuff man!!
fuck Seth Riggs!! This guy's got it down better than any other vocal instructor I've ever seen or heard, and he's not even a certified instructor yet. Simple but effective! You are the first voice teacher out there who don't seem like the rip-offs and scams I've encountered over the years. & if I took lessons from you that did help me, I'm not gonna take it for FREE. I'd have paid you as if you were a Pro instructor. We all gotta live, eat and pay the bills, including you. Keep up the great work
really interesting. you really bring to life some concepts that can be very hard to graps, and dangerous if you do it wrong. thanks for making it more easy to figure out.

Hey, great video!
I wanted to ask you a question:
I dont really get the head voice thing. Should you like begin using it from your very last chest voice tone (example: a middle A) on, or should you kinda introduce it some tones before your last chest tone?
I dont know if I should kinda strain for like hitting my top A in chest voice, or should I switch to head voice even though I can cover some of those tones with chest voice?
Hope it is not too hard to understand.
Thx

Not to say your wrong just interested in a different point of view. Maybe the complete vocal technique has it wrong with the "hold".
But like I said im not a big fan of the mode-thinking. It just feels unnatural to me. An oversimplification which doesn't make it easier.
Like to know your point of view do they got it wrong?

So "pharyngeal resonance" is for which vowels and "uh sound" is for which vowels?
sheebshag 2 years ago
"uh" would generally be added to closed vowel sounds like "ee", "oo" and "you".
pharyngeal or mask resonance is best for open vowel sounds like "ahh", "eye-ee", "ayee" and "oh"

with curbing you also use the false vocal folds to hold back the sound
mark88bon 2 years ago
the false cords have NOTHING to do with curbing. Its a combo of twang, lowered larynx and a lifted soft palate.
picture a puppy whimpering and that's curbing.
The false cords come into play with distortion.
RocktheStageNYC 2 years ago
Sorry I got confused. I meant the "hold".

You can also use this hold on overdrive.
