  • Leontyne Price's version is much better. Hands down. Renee Fleming has said that she looks up to Ms. Price. Thanks :)

  • Watch Dr. Maryann Kyle sing this. Type in University of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra Dr. Kyle and it should be the first result.

  • this is beautiful

  • I also think that as fine as Rene sounds - she cannot compete with Price. However, if we hearing only the best renditions would make listening somewhat boring?

  • NONE BETTER... sorry kids

  • just beautiful in every respect

Renee is so gifted and talented

  • This is fucking stupid. This is not the way this song was intended to be sung. Renee is a master in her own right, but this piece is definitely not for her. And I could care less about "artistic license". This song is a lullaby. Try playing it - sung by Renee - for YOUR child and see how well that works.

  • @briesman You nailed it.

  • SANG IT RENEE!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE HER!!!!! :o)

  • Gorgeous!

  • Love Renee, but....mmmm.....not the piece for her. It's beautifully sung, yes, but it's missing the color and warmth that is brought out by african-american voices....just my opinion.

  • Awesome!!!

  • Amazing!!!

  • total übertriebener ausdruck, sonst gutes stück!!! pauljaeg.

  • Actually, in the opera, Clara sings this aria as a lullaby to her baby. After Clara dies and Bess takes the baby in, Bess sings the aria to the baby

  • @jcatenor Thanks for the correction. I knew Bess takes on the piece (I think a step lower) latter on the opera, but could not remember the name of the character that sings it in the opening.

  • Bravo!!! Bravo!!!

  • @oblia25 Actually, you are wrong. This is from a complete opera (Porgy & Bess). Luis & Ella did marvelous jazz renditions of the piece, but Summertime was not born as a jazz song, but as an opera aria.

Anyone wanting to hear this piece sung to absolute perfection should look no further than Leontyne Price in the Porgy and Bess highlights album.

The piece has also received marvelous pop interpretations by the likes of Ella & Louis, Fantasia Guarino & Janis Joplin. All worthy of a listen.

  • @tenore23 Out of curiosity, what do you make of Gershwin's being influenced by jazz music and trying to compose an opera (like Carmen) of individual songs? Just wondering. I recall that there were some black performers (pianists, singers, and dancers) that Gershwin would sort of check in with... I guess I think in his case, the jazz/classical line is hard to draw.

  • @tenore23 PS: Fantasia Barrino

  • I love Renee's voice. This is not her song.

  • Is it alright if I just run around this room and scream a li'l bit?

  • @Grandtenore Knock yourself out bro. Just make sure you scream safely, i will not be held responsible for vocal nods.

  • she is blessed!!!

  • ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! this was OMG....phenominal! Her natural pitch is beautiful!

  • I think that her singing is very good.. the orchestra sounds weird for me.. maybe it's too slow, and has no passion at all.

  • There is no excuse for sliding and scooping...at such excess...even in Gershwin...

  • OK, I am not a fan of her work, but of her voice, yes. This is heavenly singing. Brava.

  • If this is "interpretation" than what is it with her O mio babbino caro of the same evening. Something is not right with her I can tell you. She does not seem to care, and the first "Summetime" utterence is such a boring and mat sound. I doubt it was rehearsed either. Of course my useless opinion.. :D

  • It's true something is not quite right in this one. She sings it a whole step lower than she usually does and has to insert a lot more breaths than she usually needs to. This was obviously an encore at the end of a concert so she was just tired I guess.

  • I heard Ms Fleming sing this piece in person at Benaroya Hall in Seattle during her tour promoting the CD "Night Songs," as part of an encore set.

It seems to me her performance in Seattle was more dynamic and energetic--something is off in this one.

But still--what a voice--her worst day is many singers' best day ever!

    Thanks for posting this!

  • absolutely gavanising. perfect.

  • PERFECT!!!! AMAIZING....

  • wasn't she a jazz singing before she became an opera singer? It's like she's fusing both styles.

Usually I'm iffy with Fleming because she scoops a lot, but in this style it's perfectly fine. Although she isn't my first preference for this role, it's still a very nice interpretation

  • Bravo! I believe that Ms. Fleming is perfect for Gershwin's "Summertime". She, like Gershwin, can fuse classical and jazz genres, as she brings artistry to each. I so respect her versatility.

  • Kiri Te Kanawa's version sounds far more vibrant and natural.

  • Leontyne Price sang this role ten times better than Renee Fleming. I give Renee Fleming a "E" for effort but the she does not bring out the character in this piece.

  • I don't think Price ever sanf Serena (I think that is her name) but Bess. She did record the aria and hers is the best I have ever heard.

  • Leontyne Price did sang "Summer Time" This was one of her signature songs. This is not a good song for Renee, I would rather hear Kathleen Battle sang it or Jesse Norman. They are ten times better than Renee in this song

  • @Royalorgans 2 different voices

  • @Royalorgans

True but Kathleen Battle wins the prize still.

  • @Royalorgans UMMM Price never sang the role of Clara who sings the role of Clara in the Opera. She sang Bess though many times. Renee Fleming has NEVER sang in any performance of the Opera..Porgy and Bess. NOt the right color dear......

  • @Royalorgans Amen my friend.

  • Merci!

  • viel zu viele portamenti.

    schreckliche interpretation.

  • well this is JAZZ STYLE! she is doing the absolute right thing! Wer schrecklich interpretiert ist das orchester! Das hat keinen Beat! Viel zu run gespielt! SHE´S AMAZING and actually did Jazz singing through her college years! She understands it! She´s american!

  • but thing song is not a jazz song...

  • Gershwin is no jazz???? please go on wikipedia and than we keep talking ;-)

  • i meant the vocal technic is not jazz you see??

  • It's actually down a whole step from the soprano version of this piece.

  • one of the best versions of this brilliant song ;)

  • Glad you like it. Have you listen to the Young Leontine price sing this? You should if you haven't.

  • from 3:20 till the end, my favourite part, it's like falling down and crushing into feathers

  • wow , i LOVE how jazzy she made this one!

  • superbe interprétation !!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is down a half-step. I wonder why?

  • She always sings jazz and pop in her lower tessitura to rid herself of to much

    technique.

  • A pleasure to listen to......thanks for letting us share.....Isn't You Tube a miracle?
