OK first off that looks nothin like calvin or hobbes and the trees look bad i mean, i love how you are trying to become an animater but this was not the best ive seen. but good luck on better ones!
I disagree. If you wanna see the real voices thats should be for Calvin & Hobbes Look up this : Mars is amazing or something like Robot chicken - Calvin and hobbes
The face of calvin is not moving an inch! No emotion. I would be terribly shocked if a fish would bite me! But I liked hobbes- the birtish accent is only inspired by artist. So youre free for that but work on the emotions... and the voices.
judging by the description, this animation was maybe made for a tech class in school. Its not like the animator had their entire life to make this, it was probably made under a time limit. And this isnt a copyright violation. It would be a copyright violation if the animator was actually taking credit for the strip or making money off of it. since they had to pick a comic strip, some author is going to get their comic strip animated, or else they would have make their own strips
Ok for all those who are upset, angry or disappointed at this video I would like you all to try and do this
and as for the voices HE'S BRITISH FOR FUCKS SAKE just calm down with your comments
this could be his first ever 3D animation he's ever done so give him a little credit for actually bringing your cartoon heroes to life rather than putting him down because of some fucks ups in the video.
I think at the end I would have had hobbes come yelling out of the woods and scare the crap out of him and push him into the river had calvin treading looking pissed and then say something smart to hobbes. This would have been perfect after the scare that he had with the fish and mybe even change the fish to something more scary like a shark. Then had Calvin must have been taking Steroids because his freaking huge. Hobbes look ok over all nothing like the comics
I thought it was great! Keep Animating this stuff! But Try and change Clavins Face a bit and if possible use the same fuzzy effect that you have on Calvins hair for Hobbes! :-P
Yeah this sucks. First of all, Calvin and Hobbes are NOT brittish, their american. And the models used for this are just ugly. Calvin and Hobbes deserve way better than this.
wow...this is horrifying. I guess I can kind of appreciate the work you put into this, but I'm just appalled at your character models and the shere boredom you created here.
Two things wrong with this video 1: calvin's hair is WAY off. 2: What's up with their voices? A british accent? I thought Hobbes would have more of a teenager like voice. And calvin, he sounds like he's 10 years old. HE'S ONLY SIX!!!!!!!!
I don't know why people are leaving such nasty comments. Whoever made this obviously put a lot of effort into it, and I admit it's not one of my favourite videos, I still think it's job well done.
The problem is that he took an exceptional comic from a great strip in general and put it into 3D - and sub-sub-par 3D at that - and added horrendous British voices to Calvin and Hobbes
It's like turning Shakespeare plays into graphic novels or rapping out Mozart; it's a travesty of nature and a smack in the face of the original artist.
What specifically is a matter of taste? Because Watterson said multiple times that he ddn't want Calvin and Hobbes stuffed animals or a TV show, etc... b/c it would detract from who they were and what they were meant to be (e.g., look in the tenth anniversary book)
None of that is true. Watterson did indeed consider animating Calvin and Hobbes. He only said it would be scary to hear Calvin's voice. But he openly expressed admiration for the art form. That is well documented.
The 10th anniversary book only says that Watterson liked the idea that his strip was a one-man operation, not that hating animation and didn't want it.
Your comments on rapping Mozart (people have done it with Handel's Messiah), or graphic noveling Shakespeare is the matter of taste.
First, with regard to voices, he said, and I quote (10th anniversary, page 11) "I don't want some animation studio giving Hobbes an actor's voice..." So it wasn't just Calvin's voice.
Second, he also said "I have several problems with licensing...commercial products rarelly respect how a comic strip works...the subtleties of a multi-dimensional strip are sacrificied for the one-dimensional needs."
Third, this animation absolutely sucks! Look at those trees, for cryin' out loud!
Fourth, yeah, you can say that rapping Mozart is a matter of taste, but the problem is that it's a corruption of the artist's integrity and what it was meant to be, and rapping out something meant to be played calmly, intelligently, melodically, etc... is ruining it!
"Ruining it" et al: THAT is STILL a matter of taste. Like I said, stuff like that has been done already with works like Handel's Messiah. Doesn't the group Bond perform modern renditions of classic pieces? That's taste, dude. Okay, you don't like it. But that's still taste.
I also gotta completely disagree with your take on Watterson's comments. His statements are true. But I think you're interpreting to mean something they're not saying.
He did say Calvin's voice would be scary. Yes, he had issues with Hobbes' voice. I didn't say he didn't.
But look at what he's really saying. Problems with licensing, commercial studios rarely respecting how a comic strip works. None of that means he hated animation and didn't want his work in that form. He expressed a wonderful awe for the art form in a 1989 The Comics Journal interview.
Finally, you really need to chill out in relation to this animation. The designer is likely an amateur, yes. Did everything turn out right? Maybe not. But in order to learn, it must be that way. I guarantee you, he's learning more with each day. He doesn't need us telling him his work sucks. He needs constructive criticism. Saying we don't like it would be fine. Saying it sucks is a bit harsh. Just go watch something else if it bothers you THAT much.
I get it, you think I'm one of those internet trolls who wastes his time flaming people, but I wasn't looking for people to annoy when I posted this, and I still think my arguments are valid.
Calvin and Hobbes were created a certain way with depth, personality, etc... in a medium where they were "at home."
Changing their medium means custom tailoring themt o fir your aspecific needs, which is what corrupts them.
And even if I were to say that you could change their medium and maintain in

tegrity, then you'd still have to get around the point that this was very poorly executed.
Also, about her animation, 1-she hasn't logged on in nine months, so no matter how helpful my criticism is, she's not likely gonna see it, 2-the designer is most likely an amateur, and as such she simply shouldn't undertake a task like this, especially one from a comic strip that was meaningful and cherished like Clavin and Hobbes, and 3-yeah, I've tried stuf before that didn't turn out too well. But I
I gotta disagree there, too. If amateurs do NOT attempt such feats, they will NOT learn. No, she needs to keep trying, no matter how bad they might turn out. I'll tell you from my own experience, my own 3d works are that way. Some times, it comes together so great. Other times, it sucks big time. That's just the learning process. No, give her space. State your voice if you must. Free speech and all that. But she's been faithful to the inspiration she had. An artist must do that. It's who we are.
I would like to say from experience that 3-d animation is very difficult and time consuming. I believe this is an excellent film, especially for a student.
