Even tough I grew up watching the Funimation dub, I have to say that she the one and only definitive voice for Goku. I started watching DBZ in Japanese first before DB and it never seemed jarring or weird to me. Sean Schemmel has improved dramatically in Kai but he will never come close this goddess of a voice actress. Hats off Masako Nozawa. You are truly... Number One!

let's just say, that a country who saw Dragon Ball Z first (with a really bad BGM, cut out/modified every good part etc), did not see Dragon Ball Gt's first 30 episodes until it came out on DVD, just because they thought it's to borring and not relevant has no right to say crap about Nozawa Masako, who dubbed Son Goku. You saw Son Goku first when he was already an adult. we saw him first when he was a child and we got used to her for the time he grew up. and we loved Masako as Gokus voice.

Rather, it would be correct to say that different people prefer different dubs, and no version is "better" beyond personal speculation. You're just as much a "fanboy" in this situation.

In the Japanese version he does not give a fuck and has no problem killing anyone (this is where the English dub completely mistranslated the scene where he let Vegeta live). Both have different personalities.

What western producers saw was lot of muscularly drawn people beating each other and so stereo typically dubbed it as a steroidal yell fest which was over 9000.
@morisato54 Bruce Lee isn't a hero, he's had maybe a couple of spotlight episodes, other than that he is just another one of Naruto's friend. The Goku in the dubbed series is not even that deep sounding, he doesn't sound very goofy at all though. Only when in SSJ 2-3 form I can admittedly say he sounds deep.
Give her a break though. This is almost 30 years since Dragonball first aired when Goku met Bulma. She's aged a lot since then so her voice isn't as good as it once was ;D

That's what I thought too when I first saw the Japanese version but trust me it is really good once you get used to Goku's voice! If you start from Dragonball you'll understand why he sounds that way and why it fits for the Jap version. The dialogue is a lot different (the English dub changed a lot of the script) so its like watching the series all over again like its new. Doesn't mean you have to quit watching the English version but the Japanese version is worth watching too :D

Pretty much all animes ive ever seen (not alot) is 10 times better with the japanese voice, exept for the Dragonball series. I actually quite like the american voices in that show.

No it isn't. At all. This voice was HAND PICKED BY AKIRA TORIYAMA HIMSELF. I suggest you watch the REAL DBZ, the original Japanese DBZ, to understand the characters true personalities. Goku is a goofy Japanese hillbilly, not fucking Superman. The English dub turned DBZ into a cheesy childrens show with a 90% dumbed down edited child friendly script. The Japanese version of DBZ was made for teens and adults.

@DiamondCutterBang This is true, and I personally like Subbed anime better than Dub, but I can't say the same for DBZ, DBZ Dubbed did 10 times a better job than the Japanese VA's. For a show that was all muscle and strength related it's really hard to visualize a hero with a not so manly voice. Just because Akira Toriyama picked Masako as the original voice actor doesn't mean it's better, and thus if this is what drives your opinon to thinking it's better than your opinion is blind-sighted.

@a7xISyn A hero with not so manly voice? Tell that to Bruce Lee! You completely forget where DBZ came from which is the goofy action packed adventures of 10 year old Goku. He's practically a Peter Pan who refuses to grow up mentally but gets stronger with every adventure. His transition from kid to teen in the anime was only physical. What western producers saw was lot of muscularly drawn people beating each other and so stereo typically dubbed it as a steroidal yell fest which was over 9000.

@morisato54 Bruce Lee isn't a hero, he's had maybe a couple of spotlight episodes, other than that he is just another one of Naruto's friend. The Goku in the dubbed series is not even that deep sounding, he doesn't sound very goofy at all though. Only when in SSJ 2-3 form I can admittedly say he sounds deep.

Dude Japanese DBZ is extremely epic. Don't judge it on one 15 second video clip. Goku's not supposed to sound badass. Freeza, Cell, Vegeta, Piccolo, etc are all supposed to sound bad ass. Watch clips with them in Japanese and you'll be amazed at how awesome they sound. Go to sxdxdb1's channel to watch Japanese DBZ with translated English subtitles and reply what you think about it. The English dub is good but you have to experience Japanese DBZ to get the full effect.

Sean Schemmel and Masako Nozawa have met before and have great respect for each other. Sure to most English fans, you might think Nozawa sounds kinda weird as Goku, but if you watch enough Japanese DBZ it will make sense why she was picked by Toriyama to be Goku. I grew up on English dub DBZ but recently I watched all of Dragonball and Dragonball Z in Japanese with English subtitles (go to sxdxdb1's channel hes got all the episodes uploaded) and TRUST ME, its epic as fuck.

i seriously could not watch the show with a grown ass goku sounding like that. im sorry, and i don't want to be a hater, because i'm sure that she is an incredible voice actor. but to be honest, i much prefer sean schmell(or however the hell you spell his name) over this. no disrespect to anyone who prefers the japanese voice, though. its just my opinion.

That's what I thought too when I first saw the Japanese version but trust me it is really good once you get used to Goku's voice! If you start from Dragonball you'll understand why he sounds that way and why it fits for the Jap version. The dialogue is a lot different (the English dub changed a lot of the script) so its like watching the series all over again like its new. Doesn't mean you have to quit watching the English version but the Japanese version is worth watching too :D

I used to think the Japanese voices for Dragonball Z were crappy compared to other good animes till I saw a few episodes and realized its only Goku and Gohans voices that sound like high pitched chipmunks. Everyone else sounds good except them.
