It's sad that so many people only know this from the Mystery Science Theater 3000 movie. It's a really good science fiction movie, unlike many of the "B" pictures the show made fun of.
This movie is beautifully nostalgic for me for reasons no one would care about. But I've always wondered if a bunch of albino aliens with overgrown foreheads that nobody seemed to notice wasn't the inspiration for Ackroyd's coneheads.
Cal, our hero, goes on a mind-binding journey across the universe–and returns utterly unchanged in any way. Cal’s most heroic act is to yell “Run, Ruth, run!” at one point. It’s fairly clear that both Rex Reason and Jeff Morrow thought THEY were the hero of the movie, the chemistry between Faith Domergue and Rex Reason was tepid at best
I still love to watch this film. Great special effects for it's time. And since it's by Universal, I've always felt the Metaluna Mutant should be classed as one of the "Universal Classic Monsters'. But alas, he is not!
what people fail to realize is that we are visited daily,we are the Garbage Pale of the universe all the others dump their unwanted trash here hoping they will become world leaders Washington DC is the biggest dumping ground on the planet followed by Wall street
I saw this today and I enjoyed it. It had an intelligent plot for it's time and the special effects were pretty good. That and a man can only marvel at the beauty of Faith Domergue! Such a beautiful and talented actress, sad she didn't have as much success as she deserved.
It looks great, but even by the standards of 50's sci-fi movies---"War Of The Worlds","Forbidden Planet","The Time Machine",and so on---it's hardly a classic. The whole Zagon-Metaluna war was badly in need of some backstory. In fact, the film's entire third act feels like something cobbled together by screenwriters who weren't quite sure how to end it beyond the inclusion of an alien monster, the destruction of a planet, and our heroes returning home.
This may be a movie I saw when I was about five years old. I think I remember that car exploding and that man talking to the couple at 0:36, I could never remember the title.
A great movie, even if the ending is a little downbeat. Gorgeous to look at, and what it lacks in CGI it makes up for with today's rarest special effect - a literate script.
I remember watching this on TV when I was a kid... it was pretty scary to watch then...I still will watch it..it's a favorite guilty pleasure of mine.. I love these old sci-fi movies...some of the were not only good but downright classic...others I recommend are "The War Of The Worlds", "The Time Machine", "When Worlds Collide" and "The Day The Earth Stood Still"
The interocitor was the prototype for the Personal computers of the late 1970s and 80s, and flat-screen TVs. Images on the interocitor don't register on film.
The brother of the guy who plays nuclear scientist Drl Cal Meacham (Resx Reason), Rhohdes Reason, was in the 1967 TOHO studios production: KING KONG ESCAPES. Love that Mecha-Kong!
A very good film of its time. Young people today will laugh at it, but that's because they live in the age of the computer where most any special effect is made possible, and budgets are routinely hitting 200 million dollars. Don't mock your parent's sci-fi films. They might take away your allowance.
@Hypsan I resent that. Im 17 and i love these movies prefer them to the newones anyway. Special effects dont bother me i dont concentrate on them i concentrate on story. Many people ask me what do i find better King Kong 1933 or 2005 and i always say 1933 and they dont get it. Just because the effects are better doesn't mean the film is. And anyway the new king kong effects look dated already. But back to 50s sci fi movies they are the best apart from star wars originals, 50s sci fi is the best.
@Hypsan indeed a good movie, and i do not laugh at this kind of movie, i just want to see more of them. you know why? cause every scifi movie now is so bloody serious. this and other movies like it are not so f....... serious. and those movies are from the 60s & 70s & 80s so it's more fun.
@Hypsan Hey though I am young I still appreciate the classics: The day the earth stood still, war of the worlds, forbidden planet, Citizen Kane and other classics though Citizen Kane isn't action. I do get kind of mad when people my age criticize the classics. They are cool.
@Hypsan I agree, don't mock our parent's sci-fi films. This kind of movies is far more charming just because of all the energy that has been put in to it. It is like comparing jazz to dubstep, Tarkovsky to Michael Bay and Roland Emmerich. It is this one, "Journey to the seventh Planet" and "The Beast From 20.000 Fathoms". They all score a perfect ten at some of today's youngsters.
@Hypsan Yes I understand, but I'm a 15 year old "kid" and I hate the computer age. It looks unrealistic and people in the movie business focus on that more than the plot and acting. I honestly enjoy the sci fi movies of the 50's and 60's. I love the non cgi. With their spaceship models and painted backrounds. My favorite show is Lost in Space. they made a movie out of it. its a cool though but they changed everything to the robot to cgi. kids will laugh at it but theres a few who appreciate it
Rex Reason is the brother of Rhodes Reason. Both had very successful Hollywood careers, but Rex got tired of show business and retired from acting in the early 60's.
Its very interesting that you said that because the same guy that restored rocket ship xm also restored ed wood movies wade williams [starlog magazine also issued a rocket ship xm sountrack album]
Love these 1950's sci-fi flicks...and actually this one rates high in my book. Good story line and special effects makes it in my collection. Agree Faye Domergue is VERY sexy to watch in her heels. Love that woodie wagon too...
And what exactly is an "interocitor," or however you spell it? Apparently it's a TV set the size of a sofa-bed with a triangular screen and lots of extra knobs that don't do anything. But at least it comes with a handy self-destruct mechanism in case all the programs suck.

When I was a kid, they played movie's like this on Sat. afternoon on TV and I, for one, KNEW a lot of it looked fake.
But, for the makers to just come-up with such cool, far-out stuff was the reward for watching.
It was all bizarre, funny and yet, extremely inventive .
You were asked to sort-of "go with it and believe".
CGI is great, but once the director let's it take-over it begins to look like a moving paintinng..
You're going to be a "Creator" not an "Observer".
Be proud...

Hmm... Metaluna under bombardment reminds me of Baghdad in either Gulf War.
The guy who plays the serious big-cheese "Monitor" was the goofy news photographer in the original "The Thing."
I like this for the "cool" scientist having his own jet plane and them driving an old "woody."
