My dad always tried to get me to model my swing of off Els' and there's no better swing out there to emulate. Even if you make a mistake, you have such a better chance of correcting by swinging nice and easy and focusing on the mechanics. I love his swing

7th all time winningest player on euro tour 28 wins, 18 pga wins and a lot of seconds and thirds to a bloke named woods. yeah he sucks alriight.....i wish i sucked too
@icthruu4evr modern golfers keep their lower body quiet and swing mostly with shoulders. older golfers like nicklaus watson and bobby jones had big hip action and lifted their left foot off the ground, which is an unnecessary move in the golf swing, so no you dont need to lift your left heel on the back swing.
Actually a very good vid to see that habit he developed since the injury--opening the angle between arms and shaft a little right at the outset of the downswing, jut a little cast move (seen better in face-on, but you can tell here too). Kind of a smaller version of what Jay Sigel used to do. It really screws up his timing. Once in a while you'll see him at an event where he's making a lot of swings _without_ doing that, and invariably he hits it really well when that happens.
Yeah, I think you're right--this is what happens with that slight casting move sometimes (actually you can miss it right OR left). Clearly he's not happy--flamed it a bit right. Still, as you say (I think), you can see here (and in other slo-mo vids of him, Tiger, and other people who are killing it) just how there's no "hold-off" move at all--the face rotates aggressively, a natural consequence of rotating the forearms and releasing the hands the way they're made to.
When he misses one like this, you'll see him get just a shade ahead of it, and just a little more shoulder-dominant, than he is on his good swings; the angle opens a touch (which means the hands are working ahead of the arms slightly) as the downswing starts, then they have to hold on while the arms are swinging down, which appears to me to give him an extra bit of tension that wasn't there in his swing when he was in his 20s and early 30s (before the knee problem).
eeeww!!!! that has got to be the most horrid looking swing i have ever seen! who swings with such rhythmic effortless tempo that propels the golf ball distances unknown to the avg golfer? please take this video clip down u-tube. its worthless to watch.
That isnt even close to a slice, he just starts it out to the right, but if you look at his clubface after impact, it closes down, so this ball will come back - its called a draw.
Innocent question. Why does almost every pro hit a draw on their drivers, woods, and long irons? Does the ball carry farther? Is it a"safer" shot when you can pull it off?
@dhkk1987 Depends on the pro. Niklaus, Trevino, Couples, Norman, Cabrera and tons more pros hit a fade. Draws (generally) go further, but a cut is a 'safer' shot as it's more controllable. To quote Trevino: "You can talk to a fade, but a hook won't listen".
His pivot moves closer to the ball at impact, which means his spine angle gets a bit taller through impact. A bad spine angle can cause many swing flaws.
@cjcollas that's why it's called a PRACTICE range you fkn knob jockey. Easy just to sit there and criticise, I'd like to see your golf swing or for you to show me your life's achievements. Fkn asshole.
the only blood getting around will be out of your asshole when i pull my cock out of it. i know how much you like that sort of thing. and 'stfu'...please...you're such a lame fkn dickbrain. enjoy shooting your normal 120+ off the stick next time you play. wanker.
Think of all the Tourneys he would have won if Tiger didn't play golf. Ernie has one of the best swing tips I've ever heard...type in Ernie Els swing tip. Keeping the Box, great advice
ok dude. ur talking about in the past. he WAS good. my point is that he still has such a great swing but cant score. whens the last time he won a tournament, or even a top 10. 2 years ago? STFU
I agree with you. He was good, and his swing still is great, but yet cant score. The reason: his putting. Its almost painful to watch him putt. Most people react negatively to ur comment because they only think about the past.
Ernie hasn't been the same Golfer/person since he learned that his only son has autism. Add that to him being out of the game while recovering from ACL reconstruction and you might be able to comprehend why right now he isn't the golfer he once was. Still a legend though.
I've been wondering for quite a while about Ernie's "bounce" move at the top that has developed over the years, sort of a mild version of the Jay Sigel bounce--an opening of the angle between arms and shaft right at the change of direction, starting down. It's weird. But looking at this ultra-clear vid, does anybody else see him moving the butt end of the club fractionally (and that's all it takes, with the butt end) to the outside right at the top? Check at :27-:28.
re: bonar - its cause and effect. i had/have a classic over the top swing and bonars wristy release had me thinking that all my troubles were fixed. you cant force it with the hands. release is everything, but guaranteed these guys arent thinking just flip the hands through impact and everythings great. its similar to the swing the clubhead / ernest jones and manuel de la torre. and tour tempo. the sneak in lots of standard golf teaching, but the credit for improvement goes to their magic moves
Yeah, that's a good point--I mostly agree. You couldn't start from scratch with the Bonar move (and he probably doesn't with beginners); it's more a reminder to release fully, but a lot of other elements have to be there.
You look at how quickly guys like him and Goosen get the toe of the club closed (or, if you prefer, the face of the club on the plane) after impact--Tiger does this too, and so do a lot of pros--you think there might be something to Bonar's whole "release is everything" theory.
Beautiful finish
