Wonderful song, based on a theme from Act 2 of the "greatest opera nobody ever heard." Nobody that is, except Jerome Kern who wrote the song. Presumably Kern attended the Berlin performance in 1922. Lucky guy! Plus visitors to the fredigundis website There was a "concert" performance of the opera by the orchestra of the Austrain Radio back in 1979, released on "bootleg" vinyl. .Not well recorded. But what the recording engineer (somebody the audience?) did capture will blow you away.
Oh Fred you are the best when it comes to all the classic's you could sing them so lovely. You could dance them even better with such style and grace! My heart always goes to you the best dancer that ever lived!
I had a record of Fred's songs that was released back in the 80s -- "Starring Fred Astaire" -- he had some of the greatest song writers of the era writing for him and this was one gem among many.
@kasbersky I hear whole orcestra so what? In modern movies there are zombies, laser weapons, flying cars, magic rings, huge blue people etc. etc.... I think you get my point.
The song was written by Jerome Kern with lyrics by Dorothy Fields, and has become a standard. Fields later remarked, "The first time Jerry played that melody for me I went out and started to cry. The release absolutely killed me. I couldn't stop, it was so beautiful." (wiki)
So many people associate this song with Sinatra (and I love his version too!), but Fred's is still my favorite. I love the tenderness in his delivery, and how he conveys the lyrics. Years later, when Fred appeared as a MG on "What's My Line," he dismissed his singing talent a bit. As you can tell, he was being quite humble - his voice was every bit as smooth as his dance steps!
@EpicJewelsify That,s the reason why he wa the favorite singer of Cole Porter and the Gershwins, they admit they wrote songs with Astaire,s voice in mind. Because he was so natural, When he sings it you believe him;-) That,s something else then singing a song. He,s telling a story

@C0mput3r That's awesome, I had to make a new playlist category for this video and named it 'Classic' then looked down at the comments... it's definitely true though.

If you really like this song, check out the great Art Tatum's solo piano version. About 6-7 minutes of happy jazz while repeating this great melody.
