In my humble opinion, the song was chosen to describe the bench mark achieved. Beyonce was chosen to reflect the changing of the guard to that affect. She reflects the current generation's interpretation of the intent of the song. I applaud both Etta and Beyonce. Etta can be proud that her song has been carried over to the new guard!

The original by Etta is one of my favorite songs EVER. Bey did a decent job (saw the full HQ version), far from great. 1 of the most soulful things she's ever done. Bey is missing a grit and rawness to her voice that made this song what it was for Etta. Nothing about Bey is "jazz" get some Etta, Nina, etc. LPs & see 4 urself. That isn't to say she isn't a great singer in her own right-but hardly jazz. She's missing an edge that ALL successful Jazz artists have INCLUDING Etta.

Sorry, but that casting was off strength of crossover appeal MOSTLY. Jill Scott (just to name one person) is much closer to Etta in stylings and soul than Bey will ever be. And, IMO, can act better. "He Loves Me" from 826+ CD she covers Jazz, Opera, R&B, and Pop in one song FLAWLESSLY. She's thick like Etta, raw like Etta, Jazzy like Etta, versatile like Etta... just not as popular as Bey.
If they were serious about casting, Bey wouldn't have gotten that role..

Well, I think she was trying to do it standard. Remember, she is doing this in the movie so it has to be as close to the standard version as possible. I want to hear the whole thing but so far, I like what I hear.
that's why I was critizing it. we all know she wants it to be as perfect as possible. but clearly, she has some errors(in the beginning of the clip most noticably) that deviate from the norm. and her tone was popping. other than that, I think it was great. if only she could resemble etta better.

BeeBsi, I'm not taking anything from your girl, but she should take note or two from Jamie Foxx. When he played Ray Charles in that movie. He tried very hard to come as close to Ray's vocals as possible.
My point is this...If she wants this role to be believible. She has to step outside of herself and channel the pure essence of Ms. James. That is one of Etta's signature songs and it MUST be sung with raw passion and emotion. NOT with a bunch of contemporary runs. THEN I'll be satisfied!

You calm down! LIKE I SAID BEFORE...If she wants to make this new movie BELIEVIBLE, then she needs to take a few pointers from Jamie Fox (who did an EXCELLENT job, btw) and commit to the essence of Etta James.
She looked ridiculous standing up there in a cheap ass Etta James Halloween costume, singing in FULL Beyonce voice. For her sake, she better hope theres not another Jennifer Hudson type actress in this film. Believe me, it doesn't take much to upstage Beyonce in the acting department.

no you calm down. FIRST OF ALL lol @ halloween costume (more specifically the wig). I know b hasnt proven herself to be much of an actress but comparing her to jamie fox is like saying all pop stars need to be like whitney. there is more than 1 way to skin a cat, more than 1 way to bring life to a script. jamie foxx is an immense talent, not evry1 can do near flawless impersonations, a long time will pass b4 there is sum1 else like jf in the mainstream.

If you re-read both of my posts. You'll notice that I NEVER compared her to Jamie Fox. Anyone with half a brain knows that her "talent" doesn't even begin to campare to his. I SAID she needs to take a few POINTERS (Lessons, advise) from Jamie if she wants to at least make it believable.
Don't get me wrong, I think Beyonce has talent. I just wish her father would stop forcing her down the publics throat.
I must admit, I had to laugh myself at the Etta James Halloween costume comment. lol

hopefully as an actor beyonce's interpretation will bring life to the scripted character and thereby make the character 1 that we can fall in love and empathyse with allowing us to better understand the story of the woman we know as etta james. BTW thats what acting is, impersonations are usually reserved for the comedy stage.
PS does SEFYH stand 4 sumthin? just curious.

Personally, I don't feel Beyonce's acting skills are strong enough to carry a project this size. I feel this is yet another attempt to win her a Golden Globe/Oscar nod. I think their still a little salty after the whole Jennifer Hudson/Dreamgirls upset, because that was suposed to have been Beyonce's big break thru role. (which is a whole other subject)
Now if Beyonce proves me wrong. I will be the FIRST to come back on here and admit it, and boybeyoncebitch you can hold me to it.

No, I know she can go into lower registers with her voice - but she makes it husky, like Etta's. It's phenomenal how she completely changed her vibrato and added that wholesome and deep soul into it. She reverberates more.

Well people would have 'listened' to her talents all along if she/her managment hand put emphasis on her talents as much as they did her sexuality from the beginning of her career. She may end up like Marilyn Monroe, who spent her whole life trying to be taken seriously after she used her sex appeal to become famous.

Sorry, but that casting was off strength of crossover appeal MOSTLY. Jill Scott (just to name one person) is much closer to Etta in stylings and soul than Bey will ever be. And, IMO, can act better. "He Loves Me" from 826+ CD she covers Jazz, Opera, R&B, and Pop in one song FLAWLESSLY. She's thick like Etta, raw like Etta, Jazzy like Etta, versatile like Etta... just not as popular as Bey.
If they were serious about casting, Bey wouldn't have gotten that role..

I thought this was a horrible version...Beyonce does not have a voice like Etta therefore trying to sing like her is futile. She ends up sounding mediocre. The outfit and presence were otherwise very well done

This chick right here gives me butterflies when she sings. She tore this song up. And this is the best rendition I've heard so far.
People need to stop looking at her looks so much and recognize her talent because people don't seem to pay attention to that and they don't seem to realize how much talent she has. And yes beyonce is gorgeous but she also has LotS OF TALENT. By the way her dress is gorgeous.

ok christina aguilera is not that great of a singer, singing is an extension of talking.when christia aguilera speaks her voice is light, but when she sings she tries hard to sound strong and you can tell its forced.Christina was a little girl who like whitney houston and tryed to mimic that big sound and its really annoying.

you've seen better? I haven't. Never. She did A LOT better than any other rendition I've heard so far. But it was predictable...since her voice is perfect for the song. Do you think Bee is so dumb to think she can mimic or imitate the voice of Etta? And sound exactly like her? That would be insane. I didn't like this at all. I'm a huge beyonce fan. I love her, but this was not good. Beyonce makes it sound country. It was almost like she couldn't hold the note still. People will like it because its Beyonce. Good but not great.

Beyonce hasn't been in the public eye in months. She privately got married which made news, then her sister came out with an album which made news for Beyonce. She hasnt been out doing anything, so I think we make it seem like she always on TV doing stuff. She hasnt put out an album since 2006...I think its a good time to put something new out and for her to get back into music...

Well, I actually had to think about it. Hmmm. Jill Scott comes to mind. Chante Moore, I think is better. Shanice, I think is better. Patti LaBelle is even now. Chaka Khan at her best is better. (I am naming people in the industry now because Rachelle is not right now).
But even they are only a little better and the only thing that they have her beat is more timbre maturity IMO. As I always say, Bey is the best of her age group and not even in her prime yet so....

I hate when people say she's everywhere! How long has it been since Beyonce has been on the cover of a magazine and if you do see her its because of paparazzi not because she wants to be seen. If you have a problem with seein her 'everywhere' than don't buy the magazine don't look at the tabloid photos. this is her 1st movie n 2 years! U people act like she puts out a movie every 3 months! I think she tried a little too hard to sound just like etta. like it was alright. but knowing how she was imitating etta, this could have been better especially in the beginning. the ending was better. she also used a little too much vibrato.

Well, I think she was trying to do it standard. Remember, she is doing this in the movie so it has to be as close to the standard version as possible. I want to hear the whole thing but so far, I like what I hear.

that's why I was critizing it. we all know she wants it to be as perfect as possible. but clearly, she has some errors(in the beginning of the clip most noticably) that deviate from the norm. and her tone was popping. other than that, I think it was great. if only she could resemble etta better.

I don't think she's imitating Etta, she's just keeping it classic and trying not to get too far from the original version. It's obvious she's singing it with Beyoncé's voice and Beyoncé features: you don't put all that vibrato if you don't want to sound like Beyoncé. To me what I heard for now is great. Elegant, soulful, smooth. She was very nevous, but you know..Etta was there and this was her very first "At last" performance so...
