Generally the first stitch is slipped to create a chain look on the edge of the work otherwise you get that little bump/knot. A better chain look edge though you slip the first stitch of every row as if to knit then purl the last stitch of every row.
dont know anything about it but my mum who is 88 years old ,came round xmas eve with her balls of wool, and many needles,"been doin it since i was 7 "she said, made a xmas cardigan whilst watching eastenders,an orgy of needles and wool, the result=PERFECTION
Very clear, it's a shame that you twisted at least 3 stitches on the first row (if you randomly knit into the back of a stitch every so often, you won't have even tension and twisted stitches can be more difficult to knit into)
I noticed that too, and I was going to ask if that was intentional for the first row. I thought maybe it locked in the first color change sections a little tighter? She does it at the stitches just before the color change. I've never done intarsia before so I'm truly just guessing.
couldnt help it :(

Um, I understand the twisting of the stitches inbetween the blocks, but why are we slipping the first stitch of the row?

Good though, nice and slow, and well explained.
