My teacher Don O'Bell made a distinction between "relax" which might be understood as passive, versus "release" which is more of a pro-active letting go of tension while allowing the body to be filled with ki that extends outward. I believe that is what Osensei was demonstrating.
Even more, I love Osensei's advice to practice Aikido in a joyful manner, as joy produces the state of being that invites aiki to manifest!
