Oh, quit it! There is nothing wrong with Harriets' eyebrows! You are insulting the actress here! In my eyes, she is most pretty. ...However, I do agree on her hair though, but I belive it is supposed to look a bit silly, just as Emma's eyes are supposed to be overexpressive sometimes.
I love how, when Harriet is telling Emma about her feelings for Mr. Knightley, Emma sits in Mr Knightley's chair! And also Frank and Jane's little bit was so cute! I don't like Frank but that bit made me melt!
stupid frank. he's so stupid and silly being careless not thinking about the consequences of his actions..poor emma :/ but i'm happy to see mr knightley and emma reunited :)
i need an opportunity to say that to somene 'I think you should stop talking and goo; I need to think about this.' I feel like that all the time and I love that she actually said it and just like that too.
i need an opportunity to say to someone 'I think you should stop talking and go; I need to think about this.' I feel like that all the time but I love that she said it and just like that to.
@kwongi yes......it is only when Harriet reveals her feelings for Mr Knightley, and her hopes he may feel the same, that it suddenly dawns on Emma, "with the speed of an arrow, that Mr Knightley must marry no one but herself!"
What a cad that Frank Churchill was. I think if there had been a sequel, poor Jane would have been a miserable wife by then because there was no way Frank the flirt would have been faithful to her.
Love the simplicity of Romola's "I wish to god I had never met her" in comparison to the big dramatic display in the 1996 version. Romola is my favourite Emma.
In part one of this episode Jane walks away while Emma can see her and about 90 seconds later Frank Churchill arrives. I don't see how they can have time to argue, they could just have said hi
I have read this story numerous times, and I saw the movie Clueless the other day for the first time in a long time. I was so surprised how much that movie was just like this story. I decided to watch Emma to refresh my memory on both this story and Clueless. It is dead on. I am now certain that they used the story of Emma as inspiration for Clueless :)
@FullOfBleep It is "loosely" based on the novel, but you're right -- it is much more than "loosely" based. The stories parallel perfectly! And I love both of them.
I love it because he is only paying so much attention to harriet because he knows how important she is too Emma, and he is always nice to the underdog
@srunik : i love that line too :) She took it for granted that Mr.Knightley would never marry and she was fine with the arrangement till her insecurities began to creeping with the arrival of Jane Fairfax and when he talks about the future Mrs.Knightley. On the other hand, Mr.Knightely also realizes his love for Emma when he doubts her being in love with Frank Churchill. I guess, when you are good friends and love each other it does take a long time for that affection to evolve into love :)
@godatlast Love which is born from long-lasting friendship has great power....it is nice to watch as Emma and Mr. Knightley slowly appear their love to each other
@srunik: yep..from Emma's point of view but think about poor Harriot. She endured so much grief because of Emma. Emma should actually thank god for Harriot falling in love with Mr.Knightly otherwise she would never realize her love for him. I'm sure Emma can never stop match-making..she is such a romantic..I love her. I think she is one of the liveliest Austen characters..next would be sweet Catherine from Northanger Abbey...
@godatlast yes,if Emma did not speak with harriet , she'd maybe never felt the pain at the thought he would be able to love someone else...that horrible feeling that he could belong to someone else...Harriet for example...I love that moment when she discovered her love to him...:-)....
I thought they were going to reveal the fact that Frank saved Jane from falling off the cliff and not Dixon....they seemed to be building up to it. Or did I miss that part?
@LivingintheShire Yeah...I guess so. But darn it... the director went to so much trouble to hide Mr. Dixon's face when he was saving her; plus Jane made a fuss about not letting anyone write to Mr. Dixon to say thank you for it. I thought I'd be a fun twist anyway.
@alexandrabak The Gwyneth Paltrow version of Harriet had nicer hair, but I liked this Harriet's personality. The other Harriet was so plain and... oh what's the word.... robotish. Thumbs up if you agree w/ me as well.
@mw2108 I think she meant it as if " OMG that horrid guy he was about to let the woman he's engaged to sign a contract to go live somewhere else-- and their engaged!"
The way Emma says "contract herself out as a governess!" to her own governess, as if this is somehow the worst position in the world. Unbelievable. I don't see Emma as being any more grown up or sensitive than when we see her as a child. She remains completely clueless throughout the entire story. Mrs. Weston is devastated and about to cry when she sees Mr. Weston.
What a monster Emma has created! But to her defence Harriet Smith really is a fickle character to "fall in love" three times in one year before deciding the person who she truly loved was the man she wasn't sure about marrying in the first place! I never did like Harriet Smith at this point!
@xchaz66x you need to realize though that Harriet Smith was only 16 years old in the book. small wonder she would not know what was the best choice! especially with the influence of a 20 year old rich girl like Emma.
@thehillbill709 Yes but not all 16 year olds are that fickle, not even back then. Don't get me wrong Harriet Smith is a good character but at that point she is terrible. If Robert Martin had decided to not marry her I think both her and Emma would have regretted the first decision, but if she is so easily swayed it doesn't mean much for her won opinions does it? Don't get me wrong I see your point, and I'm actually quite happy to talk to somebody about something like this. :)
she was 17 and i didn't like her either cus she acted like she was 4 she listen to everything emma says!!! and i dont like emma euther cus she thinks she's sooo important!!!! like her opinion is the only one that matters! i think harriet should have married robert from the beginning and got it over with! and i think it would have been hilarious if mr knightly would have married harriet. but like mrs elton said emma needs a governess! but mr knightly does a good job @ maturing her.
@sdroy2008 Yes I think after all of this they will both, Emma and Harriet, start maturing now they are into married life and have seen the error of their ways. :)
@xchaz66x That's true you do make a good point. And to see Harriet act so indecisive is pretty turn-off-ish. I guess we both make good points and either could work. Definitely Harriet and Emma would regret the first refusal had Robert not proposed a second time.
@thehillbill709 Exactly! It's just lucky that it all turned out well in the end I suppose, and I do agree with your points up to a point. It's nice talking to somebody with strong opinions oppisite to my own, it just makes it all the more fun! :)
@ainnhana wow your nice; i know emma can be incredibley rude and selfish but i think mr knightley is teaching her to grow up. She isn't that bad and she does have moments of kindness, she does deserve happiness and personally i think harriet suits robert martin
@freakybrowneyes7 ,looks like u have one. most people just see the romance in jane's novel all the while forgetting the social stigmas those days. Emma is a classic example of how many elite women behaved back those days. They thought they are "Ms. Know it all" who can wave a magic wand and decide for the fate of women from lower class. Though Janes novel ends on a + note of emma's change in real life that is not what happens. Its just that blind folks dont look beyond the romance in her novels.
Poor Mr. Weston...thanks for posting! I love being able to watch this whenever I want!! The way Johnny Lee Miller acts kind of reminds me of Ciarin Hinds in Persuasion (my other favorite adaptation!) The two of them are quiet and they can convey their emotions so well with just a simple look or action. Jeremy Northam and Mark Strong were great as well but as of right now, Miller is my favorite!! :) Also, it's really creepy how Harriet is mimicking Emma's looks in dress and with her hair!
How very interesting, that as Emma becomes more alarmed over Harriet's belief in Mr. Knightly's interest in her, Emma sits in Mr. Knightly's chair. As if to guard it from Harriet. .....
Love how Emma shrinks away from Harriet like she has the plague, when she says, "I was thinking of Mr. Knightley" at 5:45. Her facial expressions in this scene are priceless.
i know harriet is really annoying in this version, but this is what she is meant to be...she is supposed to be portrayed as a kind of monster that Emma has created. She is really supposed to devastate Emma, so I think Harriet's charachter is alright..
It's nice that frank and Jane are together, but god churchill is a dick!!! He's so presumptous!! And arrogant! At least in this version he has decent hair; in the Paltrow one he looks weird.
I don't like this Harriett. Though pretty and adept in the right age, she's so unlikable in character. She comes across as almost snobbish in this scene. I liked Toni Collet better as Harriett. Despite my hatred for Gwyneth as Emma.
You are absolutely spot on there , I always felt Gwyneth was a terrible Emma too but then I was always left feeling a little disappointed at every other Emma until there was Gromola, who nailed it so completely , the expression and animation she gives the character is breath taking.
eugh I know! Gwyneth's accent was all over the place and just irritated me to no end with its almost whiny quality. I didn't like Kate Beckensale as Emma either, but as you said, Romola nailed it completely :) She sets Emma up as she should be :)
It is said that practice makes perfect and I look at all the other versions as practices all leading up to Jonny and Gromola's perfected final version! Isn't it funny how you can watch adaptation after adaptation and you kind of watched it but it really just passed you by without having any effect on you, then something comes along like this most recent Emma and BAM knocks you for six and reels you in! I'm like an addict I have to have my daily fix of at least a clip of it a day.
Yes, many thanks for posting. I love these last few scenes in the adaptation leading towards their confession of love for each other. I really like Johnny Lee Miller's subtle characterisation actually. He's very quiet and understated.
In the book, Knightly comes off as a lot stuffier so in comparison, although subtle, he brings quite a lot of animation to the character. I had my doubts when I first heard Jonny Lee Miller was going to play George Knightly as he looks nothing like the image in my head whilst reading the book but he was strangely 100% perfect! What an absolutely fantastic actor, the expression in his face speaks volumes without him even opening his mouth.
This third matchmaking meltdown is taking its toll on Emma. At about 6:02 you can see that she is developing a facial tic.

What an absolutely fantastic actor, the expression in his face speaks volumes without him even opening his mouth.

how I absolutely love Emma's speech to Mrs. Weston...she keeps sounding more and more like Mr. Knightly...oh, how perfect they would be
