You heard it correctly. At least part of this is a song about an area in east London called Canary Wharf. It is a business district built on unused wasteland by the docks of the Thames. In the 1990s a market downturn stalled it's construction. The Canary Wharf was landscaped with mostly artificial plants, which is where "Fake Plastic Trees" comes from.
