  • My favorite version of my favorite song... I just love the extra powell and rossington fills that they dropped for the album...

  • thanks for the video. Remember hearing the news of the crash on the radio late at night and could not believe it. Had purchased the album with the flames and then after the crash that cover was replaced with one without the flames.

  • Does anyone remember the first time they heard this song? Subject matter aside, it sent shivers thru my very core. No one knew what was to come. Those shivers were a premonition. Let's sufice it to say, LaRue was justifibly upset. She did the right thing. Need I say more?

  • @nynyrocks....thanks for sharing....

  • I heard a story on Howard Sterns. Artimus Pyle revealed on that fatal flight, that pilots said we're going down and everybody buckle up. Ronny refused, I guess he had a death wish or something. Anyway Artimus survived, broke his shoulder or something, but went looking for help. They landed in a swamp way down south. When he finally found a house(it took over an hour) this crazy redneck guy shoots him.Talk about a bad day.

  • @joekoool102 There is an interview with one of the survivors(Gene Odum) on youtube ,and he said Ronnie was sleeping on the floor. just type in Lynyrd Skynyrd Plane crash on you tube .It wouldnt let me post the link . He seems to be honest ,but who knows.........................

  • The pinnacle in Rock was reached in '77' for everyone else...but not for LS. They would have been jammin' today to throngs of old and new. Think... if..just if...LS would have put on a tour today with Duane Allman steppin in for a set. Todays Rock Bands would have lined the roads just to get a 'smell' of true greatness....and would have left thinking........WTF were we thinking?

  • 3 of the best gituar players in the same band and you can always tell who is doing the lead. I think Gaines was the best though, then Collins, then Rossington but they are all fucking great

  • @CerpinTaxt1983 I was thinking the exact same thing, except I say Gaines was best, then Rossington.

  • @Exilemainstreet they complement each other perfectly they are

    amazing

  • hahaha got some coke

  • Hell yeah !

  • South Baby!

  • great song...but it refers to the smell of nigas:/

  • @MsNemesis7 what an ignorant comment

  • @wozjj Yes, your comment certainly is "ignorant"-- as in not experienced with "nigas"--like yours truly is, you deracinated twat.

  • does anyone know why artimus pyle isn't in a band? Why did he left?

  • @overdriven77 He had a blue with Rossington....

  • this is one of the best of their original early on days when they were really clikin together...just an opinion

  • Wow. This sounds great. This is one of the better concert vids on YT from a sonic perspective. Impressive. Thanks for the upload.

  • im with you this is one of the best bands out there you im only twelv i love anythig 80s and lower its skill not beat

  • I love this song. But I don't get how people will rip on Hip Hop and then name drop Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga. I like Hip hop, most hip hop fans hate Justin Beiber. In fact most Hip Hop fans are all about the lyrics. Southern Rock like Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers were all about hard hitting lyrics that told the stories of the poor and working class. Hip hop is no different. I'm not talking about Rap or RnB or that Bling hop stuff either. I'm talking Hip Hop, hard hitting stuff.

  • Everytime i watch this i get shivers when Steve gaines and allen collins are playing facing each other near the end. Allen Collins had such a hard life after the plane crash , RIP allen you were amazing and will never be forgotten.

  • @FloridasSon He was just taking a hit off of his cigarette. It wasn't uncommon for Gary to smoke and play simultaneously.

  • this has to be one of van zants last live video, if i was there in thoes stands i would yell not to get on that plane in 3 months.... RIP Ronnie Vant Zant, October 1977

  • I saw them in Houston in early -76 with The Outlaws opening. Great show!

  • Had chance to see them on their last tour in Philly 1977. The were on the bill with Fleetwood Mac at JFK Stadium. The weather forecast was for rain all day, so I didn't go. Damn, it didn't rain until after the concert!

  • @FloridasSon I'm pretty sure Gary was just taking a hit off his cigarette. If he had shot the bird at Ronnie, he probably would have gotten his ass whupped.

  • Is that the crowd cheering and clapping when Steve Gains does his solo? Him and Gary are great picking off each other!

  • These guys SIMPLY put every other band in history to shame. Sorry, they are just sooo good. I cannot believe how few hits they have.

  • Always been my favorite Skynyrd song

  • Charisma! Ronnie Was loaded with it!! He was the heart and Soul of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Maybe they should have retired the name. Not for me to judge. I guess.

  • Charisma! Ronnie Was loaded with it!!

  • wow from wales, these guys were without doubt the best musicians this century. zepelin, sabbath, purle ,,i all love, but could not hold a candle to these guys,, thanks for all the notes that make my head happy, kipper

  • Damn sure nobody can do it like they done it....simply the BEST...

  • Steves strat is da best !

  • This is in the top ten R&R songs evAAAAAAAAAA !

  • I lived with Leon in 1987 for about a year. He use to talk about the crash and how he sat between Steve and Ronnie. He said he remembered a light and then seeing Duane Allman who told him its not his time and to go back brother Leon. Ok Leon was on allot of drugs then, but the sincerity in which he told it was amazing. A good -hearted guy who never really shook off the tragedy.

  • @nynyrocks My friend that started with them in 64 and Left them in 76 said he was on the Plane once and that was enough for him. He still hates flying on tour! Can you blame him?Don't Forget all our Florida bands were and are a family. Good Story NyRocks I've heard it before so I can vouch for it being consistent and what he said btw ;-) Our Bands all like each other and like I said their Family, I miss Hughie from the Outlaws and btw their playing again!

  • @nynyrocks if I would have seen Duane Allman and new that Ronnie was going to be with him I would have shot myself as soon as I got out of the hospital.lol

  • @nynyrocks... if you lived with Leon in 1987, you would be senior in high school...how does that happen....

  • @nynyrocks Who is Leon?

  • @nynyrocks Who is Leon?

  • @MrBbme99 Skynyrd bassist Leon Wilkerson!

  • Ronnie was the music that he did more than any other performer

  • To this day, seeing these videos hurts. I still remember the tragedy of the crash like it was yesterday, and then losing one by one till, of the original folks, all that is left is Gary. I've seen many artists who I liked leave us ..But for some reason when I see this I just miss them so very much.

  • This the shit right here. All band members are involved not like the bastard country artists today that are concerned about themselves only. Thats the problem with music today: selfishness. Nobody cares about making good music just about making money and "wooing" ladies. Skynyrd knew that it took a BAND to make good music. I guess Im done with my rant for today lol.

  • ROBIN WILLIAMS CAR TYPHOON XM.?/GABBY LOGAN AMY WILLIAMS SAFECRACKER WATCH

  • one of my all time favorites . . . love the triple guitar attack

  • Gary Rossington is truly a Legend in his own time.

  • It's few an far that bands sound this good live- only ROCK and ROCK.

  • Too bad that people these days decide to listen to this "stylistic" bullcrap that people call good music. yes, i am talking about hip-hop and other auto tuned stuff. i'm 15 and find that this is skill and talent. TAKE THAT JUSTIN BIEBER AND REBECCA BLACK!

  • @Motorbreath82 HEY WE DONT so calm down dude. lets start a movement, of real music

  • @Motorbreath82 you must be a koon from the trees that know we comin back to get ye..hehehe.

  • @cpett017 lol whats that from?

  • @Motorbreath82 once again, kids trying to be cool. no one gives a shit ur 15! lol

  • @Motorbreath82 You are wise for your age ,kid. There is no possible comparison to incredible musical talent Like the classic Rock bands had ,to the corporate ,artificial garbage ,that Disney ,and Nickalodeon try to market to kids .our parents ,or at least your Dad must be cool ,to have pointed you to his old collection, or maybe you discovered it on your own . Gangsta Rap & Hip hop is total Garbage, not even music. It is theft of someone else's art ,and talentless Bullshit.

  • This is about Gary Rossington's wreck in that Gran Torino when he almost died and the band fined him I think

  • This is about Gary Rossington's wreck in that Gran Torino when he almost died and the band fined him I think and maybe he almost died

  • 3 out of 545 people don't know what music is.

  • i just seen the band that is playing under the name "Lynyrd Skynyrd" a couple days ago, they opened for ZZ Top.I think its awesome that their music is still touring today.Even tho Gary Rossington is the only original left from the band.I will never forget the concert, and i will see them again if they come back through Illinois.....definetly one of the best concerts i will ever go to

  • i came.

  • Thank you so very much buddy for seing my favorite band.

  • 3 months and 1 week to the day

  • how close is this to the last day?

  • HAPPY EASTER ALL

  • start at 2:52 when the girls are twigging like tree branches

  • I love the way Allens keys shine when he jumps into a dual lead with Steve.

  • dam i love the old skynyrd!!!

  • magic

  • i was at a yard sale and found an old cowbow hat, it looked just like Ronnie's. I put i on and said to my Dad "what song is it you wanna hear"!!?? An old man walked by and I saw a tear in his eye, he just turned and smiled and gave me a thumbs up and walked away. That shows you that music is the best medicine. And if music is medicine then Skynyrd is the Aspirine, it cures everything

  • Hats off for skynyrd

  • always love the guitar solos in this song the best.

  • Actually Hawk, Artimus is far from an original member. But you are right Ed King was hugh in the bands success. He is the most techinically proficient player the band ever had.But Steve was the spark that the band really needed at that point. It was scary to see how good they could have been.

  • 3 people od'd before they could figure out the meaning of this song...

  • Ronnie Van Zant's t-shirt: "Who the fuck are the rolling stones?" ... Big Balls!!

  • I lived this song, glad I got through it all alive, oak trees do not move.

  • for D. Allman...everybody RIP!

  • too much coke and too much smoke... can't you smell what's going on around you ? ????

  • There is only one..You can add another to the band that plays on in another place - Billy Joe Powell......he passed sometime ago..there are only two left - Gary Rossington , and the "outcast" Artymus Pyle. He has asked the continuing question about Roniie - IF I LEAVE HERE TOMORROW ?the rock-n-roll world has said YES, we will remember you, Ronnie ...and Stevie, and the Honk-ettes, Leon, Allen, and Billy...They must have a great band in the afterlife...they're all there

  • @hawk1866 One more, Ed King, who was a huge part of the band's development and sound on so many of their great ealier hits, He is and will always be an original Lynyrd Skynyrd member, everybody seems to forget him when they mention Gary and Artimus, dont get me wrong , I am a big fan of them too.

  • Bad ass!!! this song is very cool!!!

  • I was a senior in high school when this one broke and this is exactly what it was like. My parents moved me to Mississippi in the late 70s and this was for real our way of life and I adapted well. I later moved to Jacksonville, Florida and ran with the fast and cool there. It is amazing that I made it out and am now the parent of an 11 year-old son who loves this music. I am vicariously reliving it all thru him! He is a third generation rocker! He'd say "forget Beiber, rock on Ronnie!

  • I WAS AT ALL WINTERLAND CONCERTS FROM 1972 TO 1980 WAITING IN LINE FROM NOON TO THE VENUE OPENING DOIN AND TRYING ANYTHING PEOPLE WOULD OFFER US. REMEMBERBER 2 DOLLAR TUESDAYS. I SAW KISS THERE FOR 2 DOLLARS.PEACE KEVIN MR. PARTY ANIMAL STILL RAISED IN FOSTER CITY CA. MILLS GRAD 74

  • @KEVDOG718 shame we'll never see those prices again. Now people are paying a hundred to see Charlie Sheen mumble incoherently!

  • hey this song helped me thru my drug crazed years....really...my friend and i made a pact not to shoot drugs...and not to wrap ourselves around a tree of death with wiskey! These guys saved my life in a sense.

  • Artimus Pyle was the perfect drummer for that band. No one before him or after could hold a pair of sticks to him. He always had a plan!

  • @12groney

artimus pyle is a us marine, that is why he was perfect, because he was supposed to be their, at the time of the crash.

and what ever marines do they attack it, he attacked the drums

  • we see them at Hilton collisium in Ames Iowa just a few short weeks before there plane crash...we waited at the doors was one of the first 50 or people through the door and got a spot down front right up to stage.....best concert we ever seen......i still blame my loss of hearing on that concert my ears rang for a week.........awesome as hell

  • I also love the fact that all three were playing different guitars that carry there own unique sound.. Its just a great sound.

  • I love the way Gary, Allan, and Steve split up the guitar parts.. They never seem to crowd each other . Its very obvious that they were a hard working band to have that kind of sound live in the 70s. Lot of practice went into that sound.

  • Ronnie always liked to watch his guitar players play.....He loved it !!

  • 3 people obiously stink!

  • Great song, love it! I never seen them, but from what I've listened to, their songs were even better live, very polished live band. They achieved a lot in a short amount of time & I have the utmost respect & admiration for them. May their music live on forever.

  • yehhhhhhhhhh

  • yep sure do miss them

  • At 0.48 "too much coke and too much smoke..look whats goin on inside you"...it seems to me that he is looking at Rossington when he is singing it.

  • This is about the SMELL OF DEATH Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington, who bought a new car, got drunk, and crashed it into a tree, then a house ("whiskey bottles, brand new car, oak tree you're in my way"). The band was supposed to start a tour in a few days, but had to postpone it because of Rossington.

  • a very polished live band!

  • I like how they double the "oak tree you're in my way" part with backing vocals. They didn't do that on the studio version.

  • to bad they died....

  • nuff said....

  • I think this is their best version of this song (my fav LS song). There are some Rossington fills which they dropped for the album at 3.07, 3.15, 5.30 and 5.37 and Billys piano fill at 2.03 was also dropped. I love em. RIP

  • One of my favs Skynyrd was a badd ass band R.I.P.

  • Wow - to have seen this live would have been amazing !!

  • JoJo is still alive and well.

  • @MrSkynyrdfan Sadly, JoJo passed away in June of cancer.

  • steve was my 3rd cousin my grandpa grew up with him to bad i never got to meet him RIP cousin

  • steve was my 3rd cousin my grandpa grew up with him to bad i never got to meet him RIP cousin

  • I got chills when allen comes in at about 2:49 He was playin heavey metal licks before there was anything called metal. I sure miss him.

  • No passengers in this band...a double kick drummer, a lead bass player, best honky tonk/rock piano player ever, 3 super yet different guitarists and then there is Ronnie captivating presence, great lyricist etc... RIP

  • @wozjj not to mention the female vocalists. This band was perfect for the music they played

  • My favorite from them. How the hell did three of the most incredible guitarists end up in the same band. The chances of this seem astonomical...yet it did happen.

  • can't get enough of it...seen it 100's of times and am still mezmerised..wow...the best version of the best song ever from the best album ever, by the best band ever. from Australia

  • I had the honor and privelage of seeing this very same line-up of Skynyrd in April, 1977 in Nashville, Tn. with the Atlanta Rhythm Section as their opening act. I never dreamed when I was watching them play one of the greatest live sets I've ever seen performed that night, that the heart and soul of the band would be ripped away and killed a very few months later in Gillsbug, Mississippi. Fly on Freebirds!! For you truly were nothing but pure talent!!

  • Favorited this, as I watched & listened....Ronnie, "Tomorrow might not be here for you", Steve, Cassie, Allen, Leon , Billy. Was it just me or did the only two left alive, Gary & Artemus(from Band) seem to be seen less....than the others? Probably one of those weird coincidences, if anything at all. Considering the date, song, hindsight...ect., Great yet sobering vid, definitely NEEDED, that's for sure. R.I.P. All & continued support for Families & Band......Thanks for posting....great vid.

  • Absolutely LOVE this song!!! Skynyrd Nation!

  • Just thinking...7 people in this video are dead and gone...JoJo...Cassie...Steve...Ronnie...Leon...Billy...Allen...It's our job to keep their memories alive by playing their music and passing it on to the next generation!

Rest in peace my brothers and sisters...

  • @SteveGLS Agreed...I miss Billy's beautiful piano ~as well~just recently

  • @SteveGLS Steve Gaines Lynyrd Skynyrd? Is that what that stands for? I have a tattoo of Steve on my right calf done by world renown tattooist Tom Renshaw.

  • @Freebird10201977...You guessed it...Steve Gaines Lynyrd Skynyrd!

  • @SteveGLS JoJo is still alive and living in Alabama. She's a gospel music singer...yep!

  • @SteveGLS Ooops, sorry, I was wrong. She did indeed pass of cancer. Very sad, indeed. What a legacy of tragdey.

  • @SteveGLS hey, it's okay. jax city. they are in a better place, for sure!

  • @SteveGLS They all went too soon didn't they? I don't think there was a Skynyrd curse or anything like that. I just think they all played hard right up to the end. R.I.P. to all of them. Skynyrd always was and always will be my favorite.

  • @SteveGLS Speaking as the next generation. Thanks.

  • @SteveGLS I was just thinking the same thing,,,,so sad,,,,,,,,

  • just a live kick ass song!

  • I saw Skynyrd at the San Diego Sports Arena in approx 74.hey opened for Dave Mason & Stevie Miller. Crowd rioted after in Tower Records prkng lot When they died I was working at a Pizza Inn in KC & cried . They were certainly just peaking as a band . Steve Gaines could have been a big star. It's fn amazing that "Free Bird" has jumped from generation to generation to today's kids who love that song !!! Lastly, their ability to include a anti drug/alcohol song on every album is a tribute : karma

  • This has been my favorite song (and still is) since I first heard it in 1977. I gotta say I prefer this version than the street survivors realease. This version has a couple of billy powell and gary rossington fills that they dropped for the album. RIP from Australia

  • @slobdogsophie: metal's got nothing to do with Skynyrd.

I was lucky enough to see this show - just 3 months before the band's fatal plane crash. Guitarist Steve Gaines & his sister Cassie (background singer in Honkettes) were old school friends from Miami, Oklahoma. Stevie was a magical addition to LS guitarists. Sadly, both he & Cassie died in the crash 33 years ago this month, as did lead singer Ronnie Van Zant. Goosebumps.

Forever young in our hearts, may each of you rest in peace.

  • @zimmiesgirl yes i know. it was just a reference

  • SWEET...

  • ludes? quaaludes?

  • Ronnie will always be miss as will steve cassie gaines allen kathy collins dean kilpatrick RIP 10/20/1977. I wish I coulda seen the full bad play in concert.

  • HELL YEAH !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Where did you get this video.

  • HELL YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • best skynyrd song ever.

  • I saw them at their last Chicago performance at Soldier Field 1977. Superbowl of rock. .38 Special, Journey, REO Speedwagon, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Ted Nugent. I was 13 and bought a guitar a week later and never put it down! Ronny Van Zandt had a cast on his leg that day and Billy Powell was playing a beautiful white piano, ah, such fond memories...R.I.P brothers!

    Dave the guitar guy

  • dam they were an awesome band! Theres no way they could ever go back to this! SHit sometimes i think id like to start a southern rock band, but man these boys and gals were raised in that, thats all they knew and it was beautiful!

  • +tell ya what you can't get anymore melodic than that. You can just feel the emotions. My all time favorite solo. Just beautiful period

  • This was really good Music ! ! I miss it

  • these dudes were fuckin' awesome.....I dare you to refute that statement

  • what a band!!i miss them so much!!

  • gary gary GARY ....wowzers

  • I especially enjoy how neither gaines, collins or rossington fuck up at all. They play it better than the studio version. Simply amazing.

  • Steve Gaines guitar brought so much to Skynyrd sound ! Love his strat twang along side rossington and collins gibsons :)

  • with billy gone now, only gary left i think. when he makes it up to heaven with the boys and girls GOD is gonna have him one smoking hot kick-ass southern rock band!!!

  • @guitarGUNFIGHTxxx you got great taste!!!my favorite song ever also. truly a pefect song!

  • The fact that this was released around the same time as the crash is "eerie"

  • The best song of all time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I LOVE that higher solo part at 3:06. sounds so ominous. what an amazing song.

  • I was there in these great times. I played with a band called "HIGHWAY" and in our show evernight was Simple Man_Tuesday Gone and Freebird and still do um today 35 years later. Thats the kind of music these guys done_TIMELESS_ fly on FREEBIRD.

  • whao ... memories might fail ... but the soul does not ...

  • ronnie was so hottttttttt....so sexy and a bad ass mother fucker....the whole band

  • Leeds, England, 1976, AWESOME. Manchester 2009 & 2010 AWESOME Lynyrd Skynyrd live forever.

  • This is my favorite song from my favorite albaum and band and it has been that way since I first heard it in 77.... RIP they were the best. I prefer this version better that the studio version as they deleted the piano fills at 2/04 and 2.08 and the guitar fills at 3.08 3.15 5.30 and 5.38. Thank God they reformed with Johnny and pumped out some great albums. The new band, however, never seem to be able to recapture the intensity and brooding of this song when they do it live. from Australia

  • @hairdoggy, you got that right!! @LynyrdSkynyrdLover~ Thanks for the clip. I love this video. At 2:16- 2:27 Ronnie dooesn't seem to take his eyes off Gary...Love the body language and the little bump at ~2:24, Can't seem to get enough of this these guys...

  • This is the best line up of the band EVER! R.I.P. My brothers! You will always be missed but, your music and memmories will live on forever!

  • At 56 years old I got to enjoy them. They are still number one with me! R.I.P. Boys. Your music plays on. But, we sure do miss ya'll!!

  • @huntingun1

Amen! i named my oldest child after Ronnie vanZant:)

  • What freaks me out is everyone on stage here (except Ronnie and Steve) were 25 years old. I mean 25 years old! And their owning the stage, and writing and creating music that will live forever! It's kinda scary how much talent these boys had.

Man why did that plane have to go down?

  • God i had paid a million to see this!!!!!!!!!!

    Lynyrd Skynyrd for life!!!

  • If it werent for the Southern wail and the pianos, Skynard would have been as heavy as Zeppelin, and maybe Sabbath! Either way this Original lineup was the ONLY Skynyrd to speak of!! Simply Legendary!

  • man this was there finest hour , they were never better , tighter or more creative than this period, steve gaines brought a whole new dimension love it!!

  • god i wish i could go back in time and stop them from getting on that plane i always wonder how much further they could have gone and how many more great skynyrd songs
