what does he understand of his parents? He understands the music: the tenderness that comes within the words is given by the way of singing the words. Music is not exclusive of professionals, anyone can do it, and it is the most direct means to be happy. When a person can sing, at least a little, and can share it with some friends, it is the most beautiful way of being happy in that moment.
these pieces of music that were truly especial and beautiful was a great motivation. Many of my friends and teachers, after 9 years learning the cello, told me I was a little crazy to start again, because it was like starting anew: there were no teachers who would come from old transmission for this instrument. Man cannot live without music. Music is so essencial for man because man is born with music: the baby that is born does not speak Spanish or French or any language,
Therefore, we began to play an instrument for which there was no certainty about how it should be played, we had to research, investigate, think, find out its secrets through an almost archeological research and almost mysterious. And this was an extra motivation for me. I remember the feeling of injustice when I saw these wonderful scores in the libraries of paris or london, and I saw this music that nobody played and were completely forgotten. So, this idea of giving life again to
because, symbolically, one could see in all the registers of the instrument the voice of a mature man, a young man, a girl, an infant; so we have all the tessituras of the different ages of man. It was these features that condemned the instrument to silence, at the end of the 18th century, when the orchestra grew bigger, with lots of violins and cellos. It has never permitted to be tamed, so to speak, there was never an orchestra with many viola de gamba playing the same voice.
that is to say, the instruments that were played on the arm, from which the violin derived. The secret of an instrument is in the music composed for it. Naturally, all the texts, treatises and sometimes the composers' letters also help, they are complementary. but the esencial thing that allows us to discover how to play an instrument [is in the music]. I am playing now at a very soft level. The viola de gamba was appreciated because of these features, and also
The viola de gamba appears arround the middle of 15th century. The first images that we have of this instrument are from 1430-1440. This instrument has some characteristics of his very own: *** has 5, 6 or 7 strings, depending on the time period; it has 7 frets (as are called the divisions that the guitar or the lute also have); it is to be played while resting between the legs, which makes it different from the family of what was called in the 15th century "viole de braccio"
Every music of great beauty, every music of genius is above time, it's true: it never dies, but it always has the mark of its time, and that is a very important thing. Every music has in itself the elements that associate it to an epoque or a country. The performer must go deeply enough into each of these epoques for forgeting it afterwards in order to let music speak by itself.
He says (I paraphrase and interpret) that man cannot live without music. That a child is inherently musical. That inherent musicality with which we are all born precedes and is needed in order to learn to speak! That playing or singing, even a little, and sharing that with friends or family is essential for happiness and fundamental to our being human. He discusses his passion for presenting beautiful music that has been forgotten. All in the most musical languages, Eth pano. Gracias Jordi!
Gracias
I'd like to know what he's saying as this is the only in depth footage of Savall describing his instrument. My Spanish is quite poor.. Any translators?
all music of great beauty, all genial music is timeless. it is the truth, it never dies. nevertheless, it always carries a mark from its time. And this is a very important issue, for every music contains in itself the elements that bring it close to or makes it belong to a country or a (historical) period. so, the performer must deepen himself in that period, to be able to assimilate its elements and then forget them...
