  • Do you know what type of horn Joe is using for this piece? It looks to be a vintage medium bore horn.

  • @pablito162 it's an alto trombone but im not sure what brand

  • I played in high school honor band with Joe Alessi...

  • @milestoneman Hey there! Im a 2010 TL Graduate and currently studying music and playing the trombone as a Sophomore in college. Joe's by far my biggest idol and would love to play side by side with him at some point... or at least take some lessons... He replied to an email I sent to him about a year and a half ago about a mural my friends and I painted of him and other great musicians we love. Must have been great to play in high school with him.

  • @milestoneman u lucky sob

  • I played in high school honor band with Joe Alessi...

  • phil myers with hair....crazy

  • GREAT trombone section !

  • What a BOSS

  • I couldn't really hear the bass trombone solo. :/ New York Phil Bones=Epicness.

  • high E flat on the trombone. YEAH WHAT

  • Joe's putting the orchestra on his back.

  • Joe's putting the orchestra on his back.

  • You can almost hear the voice of the Almighty in the stentorian first tones of the trombones in this awe inspiring movement--His voice intoning with each change of the solumn tri-tone chords. One can truly picture the monumental Cologne cathedral with Schumann. The music is a tone picture of the highest order--but something even more than that--the canon brings one up the high gothic cathedral nave and the flashing last chords touch on a scene that can only be felt and no longer seen....

  • @windstorm1000 lol. Someone clearly feels music doesn't speak for itself well enough.

  • @GregTubaTownsend All music listeners are entitled to individual interpretations of compositions. And you must not know your musical history--Schumann specifically was inspired by the Cologne Cathedral while composing this movement. This sympohony is sub titled the "Rhenish"--So I'm rather close to the mark, wouldn't you say?

  • @windstorm1000 Yes, all listeners are entitled to interpretations, although I'm not sure what that has to do with what I said. I just think it's funny that you have so much to say on behalf of that which speaks without words. I also would like to add that the inspiration of art does not necessarily equate to its subject. As for your last words, if I were you I would reevaluate your idea of the existence of this mark. After all, it's all just individual interpretation, right?

  • @GregTubaTownsend Everything. As I said, but u didn't listen, my comments pretty much reflect what Schu. himself wrote in his writings of this mov. He was inspired by the instillation of the Arch. in Cologne cath. He says so in his writings. Whether they reflect what I wrote I cannot say, but I'm in the ball park. Music of course can speak for itself--but in certain cases know. the b-ground of a piece of music & its insp. add to the enjoyment of it, ie--the Past. Sym., Ride of the Valk.

  • Hey check out my website below! I am a promising young trombone player looking to get more opportunities and gigs to further my career as a musician.

    benlupinacci.webs.com

  • @benlupinacci Didn't I meet you at some PMEA festival?

  • Why is it that there is always a cretin who has to put down artists who are so far above them?

  • ...not to mention just crazy ensemble playing. finlayson the semi-unsung hero and harwood...well, it's hard to get better than harwood.

  • thanks joe! just awesome.

  • damn i love how alessi jumps to that high Eb.. damn lol

  • very good!

    FANTASTIC!

  • The technique, accuracy, and tone of this trombone section is astounding.

  • LOL i just got linked to this after listening to lmfao's shots

i think this makes me appreciate classical more x] <3

  • Joe Alessi.....

  • This is 100% why I love music!!!!!!!! THANK YOU GOD!!!! =-) I'm a Trombonist and Euphonium

  • Kurt Masur never more words

  • Isto sim é qualquer coisa de fantástico e este maestro Kurt Masur é qualquer coisa de especial... Fantástico mesmo!

  • LOL phil myers on horn has changed a bit..... although not much

  • Also keep in mind this is the first entry of the trombones after a half an hour or so. Makes those high notes even more difficult to hit during a concert...

  • @gvanwetten practice makes permanent

  • la parte iniziale fa paura!!grande alessi!!

  • Is he using an alto trombone? cause i can't tell.

  • Yes

  • the chord at 0:26 ist really awsome!

  • yeah, that's because of Phil Myers and horn section!

  • @FiraOrange2 true that. the high Eb in the alto trombone is awesome. especially the portamento to it... I don't know if it was intended... but then again it is Joseph Alessi, so I can't imagine that it was a mistake. Either way it sounds really cool.

  • The conductor kinda looks like Jack nickleson lol

  • This conductor is the great Kurt Masur, who was the music director of the NYPhil for some time.

  • @phrenqdog has steven reineke permanently taken his spot?

  • lol the composer looks like the ones in cartoons.. but, the orchestra sound cool though

  • I would sell my soul to be this good.

  • Perfection. Thanks for posting this.

  • How is his mouthpieces?

  • @trombonedemon For alto, I can't tell, but his tenor mouthpiece is huge for a tenor player, he's a Greg Black guy, playing on something around a Bach 1 1/2 sized piece.

  • This bass trombone, the sound is perfect, is brilliant.

    =).

  • Those trumpets are rotary-valve trumpets. German orchestras use them exclusively. I'm not sure why New York phil would be using them though.... must've been a style choice. They have a much darker sound in general than piston valve trumpets.

  • and its not phil smith

  • there are a lot of american orchestras that use rotary trumpets for heavy german rep because of the sound quality

  • excuse my noobyness, but what are those trumpets?! is it too late and i'm tired, or am i seeing 6 valves!?

  • I little fast for my taste. Joe Alessi is God!

  • its alto trombone... thats why he can get it so clearly. he could ptobably do it on tenor like nothing

    i can hit a high D on my tenor =D <--- is a D

  • haha, try a triple Bb, then talk.

  • im only in 11th grade man.... and i just got my braces off like a week ago.. so...

    i can talk if i want =P

  • age means nothing. there is no sense in bragging about high range because there are plenty of people out there both older and younger than you that can play much higher. more importantly, they play with musicality and finesse

  • i got to F. but i still have to get used to play that high considering i play bass bone most of the time lol

  • Man . . . a high 'Eb' from the get go! That's awesome!!

  • ...remember he's on an alto, think of it as a fourth down.

  • if you're talking about at 25 seconds in, thats only a double c.

  • It's written in alto clef...it's an Eb.

  • there must be more than one version of it then, because i have this excerpt and its written in tenor clef.

  • This is when the NY Phil was good after the post Bernstein era. Kurt Masur is a good conductor.

  • This concert is from 1995. The concert master that is in the video is still the concert master today.

  • Is alessi playing alto or 2nd trombone i can't tell which one is he. He looks so diffrent now.

  • He's playing principal on the alto trombone.

  • derp.

  • Phil Myers is God

  • my orchestra played this week ago !

  • Liquid Gold

  • The dream team of trombone players Alessi, Lindberg, and Yeo. I want to see it/ hear its gloriosity

  • Not Lindberg, he's not a good orchestral trombone player. His sound wouldn't match Alessi and Yeo at all.

  • thats becuz lindberg is a soloist and does a better job than joe to me...joe is good but i just think lindberg is better...lindberg has a darker, warmer, rounder sound even in middle register is the roundest ever

  • Holy crap, Joe Alessi.

  • what happened to this orchestra? listen to that string sound the legato the full sound the power. I heard them on HDTV they do not sound the same today.I think Delay would approve ov this sound bow speed bow pressure. The Brass always sound fatastic even now. the conductor does make a difference. They had a great one.

  • This has a very misleading title- I thought it was just going to be the section or something. This should be NY Phil plays Schumann 3.

  • yeah lol

  • No.... the bone section is really what it's all about.

  • wow i wouldn't want to mess up in front of that conductor

  • what a beast. its ironic that the best conductor ever looks like a hobo in a tux

  • I know, right? Sorry, accidentally gave you a thumbs down- I was trying to click the thumbs up but like, I didn't realize which one I was hitting until... yeah. Oops. :)

  • @uganickb32 100% with you on that.

  • Kurt sucks. He frequently loses musicians due to his lack of clarity, and members of orchestras he has conducted as a resident conductor have been glad to see him leave. For example, the first ictus of this video.Though enthusiastic about interpretation, he is hardly one of the greatest conductors ever. Orchestra members frequently rank him as one worst conductors to work with on a personal level. But I agree with the comments about trombone- absolutely first rate!

  • Joe alessi is one hell of a player! does any1 know what alto he's playin on?

  • Looks like a Bach 39, but I could (and probably am) wrong.

  • it could also be an edwards, because he plays an edwards tenor.

  • 100% right, but back then, he used to play Bach instruments. Slide lock and diamond solders are also very Bach-like.

    (I know what I say... I'm a Bach player:P)

  • i hear ya....i dont know very much about bach. i play holtons.

  • Diamond solder points aren't solely Bach, My Elkhart conn 88h has them, my kind 3b has them, my Edwards has them, and so does my 100 year old holton. It is kind of a typical thing for most all trombones

  • Yep, my Yamaha has 'em and so does my Holton bass.

    And so does my tuba.

  • im going to say Bach 39 because Harwood is still there. Pretty sure Alessi was a 42K guy before Edwards

  • What an exceptional trombone section!

Othewise, the sound of the orchestra - or what remains of it uploade here - and the way of phrasing and articulation seems quite old-fashioned to me. It has a nice natural flow though...

My favourite Schumann symphonies are those played by the Chamber Orchestra of Europe with Nikolaus Harnoncourt (Teldec) and the Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique with John Eliot Gardiner (Archiv).

  • Great video! Allesi is amazing...no words

  • this solo is so hard on trombone.bravo Alessi.awesome solo

  • omfg lol at 1:37 that trombone player looks like he's gonna explode!

  • "that trombone player"??

  • yes that trombone player

  • wow...im with you on this one rosegoldsonata....

  • That's Big Daddy Harwood, loudest bass tbone for awhile in the country.

  • Don Harwood did not need the Don Harwood Signature mouthpiece. That thing is frickin huge.

  • Is he playing on an alto? I cant tell.

  • Yeah, Alessi's on an alto right there. Man, he is one great player.

  • Was Phil Myers using a Conn 8D?

  • Yes, horn section from new York Philharmonic used Conn 8D for a while (long time by the way), now they are using Schimd

  • There is a guy who uses a Conn 8D in the N.Y. horn section. I forgot his name, but he is the ONLY guy in the N.Y. horn section currently using a Conn 8D. The rest are using Schmids like you said

  • Allen Spanger is the 2nd horn player and he uses an 8D. He also switched to the Schmid but once a prominent player said that he sounded the same playing on the Schmid, he immediately switched back to the 8D. 2 things that I miss about the Phil's old sound: the glorious and unbeatable sound of the 8D and the sweetest oboe tone in Joseph Robinson....

  • thank you knotae ;-)

  • Mazur is great

  • Also, the third trombone looks a lot like Jay Friedman.

  • Yep, could be, but it is 100% Harwood

  • dude def Harwood

  • Back when Alessi still had his hair. :D

  • some hair

  • when Alessi used a Bach O.o

  • Ahh the Bach.

  • simplemente excelente

  • Thank you jojo music, because I'm so dumb i need to be told to listen to this.

You think I haven't carefully listened to over a dozen recordings of this movement alone?

I'll try and remember to never be mildly curious again.

  • tro for com ki fait alessi le contre mib

  • Gorgeous luscious sound, made me melt.

  • WOW big thank you for this! :D

  • does anyone know whether Don Harwood is using a Large Bore Tenor or a Single Valve bass here?

Or perhaps an odd-size in between instrument of some sort...

  • to me it appears he is using a large bore tenor. :) if you look at 1:32 the tubing doesn't look wide enough for a bass..alas i could be wrong. lol

  • that makes sense; alto-small/medium tenor-large bore tenor

Hell, not much of a size difference anyway.

  • well in comparison to my bass trombone i would say it is smaller. im mainly reffering to the tubing nearer the tuning slides.

  • Look at Don's bell, it looks larger than the others. I heard that the symphony had some German trombones donated by a benefactor and the section used them when the trumpets switched to rotary trumpets.

  • i think that was more recently, not to mention the bell would be bigger if finlayson and alessi had downsized.

Alessi's alto can't have a bell any bigger than 7.5"

  • I'm pretty sure those German horns didn't have Thayers. That is probably a 42T, maybe a 50T with a 9in bell.

  • who cares you guys, people like you spend too much time thinking about that kind of crap when you should be focusing more on what comes out of the horn.

  • well said!! i just like talking crap on here.

  • Thanks for that !
