@milestoneman Hey there! Im a 2010 TL Graduate and currently studying music and playing the trombone as a Sophomore in college. Joe's by far my biggest idol and would love to play side by side with him at some point... or at least take some lessons... He replied to an email I sent to him about a year and a half ago about a mural my friends and I painted of him and other great musicians we love. Must have been great to play in high school with him.
You can almost hear the voice of the Almighty in the stentorian first tones of the trombones in this awe inspiring movement--His voice intoning with each change of the solumn tri-tone chords. One can truly picture the monumental Cologne cathedral with Schumann. The music is a tone picture of the highest order--but something even more than that--the canon brings one up the high gothic cathedral nave and the flashing last chords touch on a scene that can only be felt and no longer seen....
@GregTubaTownsend All music listeners are entitled to individual interpretations of compositions. And you must not know your musical history--Schumann specifically was inspired by the Cologne Cathedral while composing this movement. This sympohony is sub titled the "Rhenish"--So I'm rather close to the mark, wouldn't you say?
@windstorm1000 Yes, all listeners are entitled to interpretations, although I'm not sure what that has to do with what I said. I just think it's funny that you have so much to say on behalf of that which speaks without words. I also would like to add that the inspiration of art does not necessarily equate to its subject. As for your last words, if I were you I would reevaluate your idea of the existence of this mark. After all, it's all just individual interpretation, right?
@GregTubaTownsend Everything. As I said, but u didn't listen, my comments pretty much reflect what Schu. himself wrote in his writings of this mov. He was inspired by the instillation of the Arch. in Cologne cath. He says so in his writings. Whether they reflect what I wrote I cannot say, but I'm in the ball park. Music of course can speak for itself--but in certain cases know. the b-ground of a piece of music & its insp. add to the enjoyment of it, ie--the Past. Sym., Ride of the Valk.
Hey check out my website below! I am a promising young trombone player looking to get more opportunities and gigs to further my career as a musician.
Also keep in mind this is the first entry of the trombones after a half an hour or so. Makes those high notes even more difficult to hit during a concert...
@FiraOrange2 true that. the high Eb in the alto trombone is awesome. especially the portamento to it... I don't know if it was intended... but then again it is Joseph Alessi, so I can't imagine that it was a mistake. Either way it sounds really cool.
@FiraOrange2 true that. the high Eb in the alto trombone is awesome. especially the portamento to it... I don't know if it was intended... but then again it is Joseph Alessi, so I can't imagine that it was a mistake. Either way it sounds really cool.
@trombonedemon For alto, I can't tell, but his tenor mouthpiece is huge for a tenor player, he's a Greg Black guy, playing on something around a Bach 1 1/2 sized piece.
Those trumpets are rotary-valve trumpets. German orchestras use them exclusively. I'm not sure why New York phil would be using them though.... must've been a style choice. They have a much darker sound in general than piston valve trumpets.
age means nothing. there is no sense in bragging about high range because there are plenty of people out there both older and younger than you that can play much higher. more importantly, they play with musicality and finesse
thats becuz lindberg is a soloist and does a better job than joe to me...joe is good but i just think lindberg is better...lindberg has a darker, warmer, rounder sound even in middle register is the roundest ever
what happened to this orchestra? listen to that string sound the legato the full sound the power. I heard them on HDTV they do not sound the same today.I think Delay would approve ov this sound bow speed bow pressure. The Brass always sound fatastic even now. the conductor does make a difference. They had a great one.
I know, right? Sorry, accidentally gave you a thumbs down- I was trying to click the thumbs up but like, I didn't realize which one I was hitting until... yeah. Oops. :)
Kurt sucks. He frequently loses musicians due to his lack of clarity, and members of orchestras he has conducted as a resident conductor have been glad to see him leave. For example, the first ictus of this video.Though enthusiastic about interpretation, he is hardly one of the greatest conductors ever. Orchestra members frequently rank him as one worst conductors to work with on a personal level. But I agree with the comments about trombone- absolutely first rate!
Diamond solder points aren't solely Bach, My Elkhart conn 88h has them, my kind 3b has them, my Edwards has them, and so does my 100 year old holton. It is kind of a typical thing for most all trombones
Othewise, the sound of the orchestra - or what remains of it uploade here - and the way of phrasing and articulation seems quite old-fashioned to me. It has a nice natural flow though...
My favourite Schumann symphonies are those played by the Chamber Orchestra of Europe with Nikolaus Harnoncourt (Teldec) and the Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique with John Eliot Gardiner (Archiv).

does anyone know whether Don Harwood is using a Large Bore Tenor or a Single Valve bass here?
Or perhaps an odd-size in between instrument of some sort...
crwv 3 years ago
to me it appears he is using a large bore tenor. :) if you look at 1:32 the tubing doesn't look wide enough for a bass..alas i could be wrong. lol
scottieTbone 3 years ago
that makes sense; alto-small/medium tenor-large bore tenor
Hell, not much of a size difference anyway.
crwv 3 years ago
well in comparison to my bass trombone i would say it is smaller. im mainly reffering to the tubing nearer the tuning slides.
scottieTbone 3 years ago
Look at Don's bell, it looks larger than the others. I heard that the symphony had some German trombones donated by a benefactor and the section used them when the trumpets switched to rotary trumpets.
GetzenBassPlayer 3 years ago
i think that was more recently, not to mention the bell would be bigger if finlayson and alessi had downsized.
Alessi's alto can't have a bell any bigger than 7.5"
crwv 3 years ago
I'm pretty sure those German horns didn't have Thayers. That is probably a 42T, maybe a 50T with a 9in bell.
