We rode this from Chicago to Portland and back this past August. It was 15 hours late getting back into Chicago. I hope you got a voucher for yours. I was told by the sleeping car attendant to contact customer service and tell them what happened. I did and we got a cash voucher for $1,500, good for a year. The late arrival was due to the slow order in ND due to the flooding and then a suicide on the tracks in MN. Hey, excellent video BTW!
@andow21 I rode this back when I was a young kid and then it was no. The front half goes to Seattle so if that is you destination you would ride there the whole trip some goes for the back end that goes to Portland.
The only Amtrak I been on that was on time was Los Angeles to San Diego...5 minutes ahead...But the ones going across country..NEVER ON TIME...13 hours is pretty long...but Los Angeles to Arkansas...usually 3 or 6 hours...late.

Amtraks trains are never on time. Dont you people understand that yet? Even on their own tracks Amtrak is never on time!!! they pride on being late everywhere!!!
I went on the Empire Builder in May 2009. It left Chicago on time and arrived in Seattle exactly on time. Maybe even a few minutes early. Someone told me that in the USA, trains are limited to 70 mph which is quite slow for trains (in England)..
79mph. 95% of the rails Amtrak uses are Freight companies. but i do agree 79 is really slow. although the Acela on the northeast corridor (which is electrified) can go a maxium of 150mph for a short distance.
Amtrak has been late a few times for me but has also got me places 5-8 hours early so yeah, and blame BNSF and UP amtrak doesn't own their tracks so their trains always go first or is taking up track....
This is the Seatlle leg of the Empire Builder. In Spokane the train is broken in to two sections. One goes to Portland and the other goes to Seattle. The seattle secion is almost a full train. I would say 65% goes to seattle and 35% goes to Portland.
These engines are made by GE and they're I wanna say a Genesis P-42 (aka AMD-103 ). These are geared for highspeed and designed for passenger service.
The power output to the traction motors is 2,928 hp (2,183 kW). The P40DC is geared for a top speed of 103 miles per hour (166 km/h). You will find freight service power is rated @ 4000 (2,942 kW) and above now days.
I think this was with my Panosonic 3CCD cam. I need to upgrade this to HD soon, youtube is not rendering my old uploads and now they don't fill the screen.
No I wasn't upset, I ride trains all the time so I consider it part of the adventure. As the for the other passengers many of them were rather annoyed.
You are right, looks like they didn't turn anything around because the car behind the baggage is the crew car. Any idea why the conductor climbed in the engine?.
It was the Empire builder, the Cascade tunnel is closed during the middle of the day. Amcrash on the Seattle side didn't make the deadline because of the heavy traffic going east.
This train is coming of the old NP Main after going around the balloon track at Yardly.

What are these Amtrack engines?
They look mean and awesome but still are not used for freight trains.
I am wondering why is this?

Sorry this took so long. Yes they did, were you upset they did that to you? I went down to see if Chad was the engineer but he wasn't so I left.

No they turned the train. It was heading east but it was turned so it was heading west. It went back to Seattle that night.
rdw283 4 years ago
What happened to the passengers? Did they get put on a bus, or did they get crowded into the Portland section?
decline2state 4 years ago
So did they turn the train around or did it continue on to Chicago?
kanjo007 4 years ago
Did the Portland section arrive on time that day of filming? Also, what's that clicking noise I hear when your video is playing?

The clicking would be his still camera. :)
