  • do they still have some that still run today?

  • Great Video 5*

  • 威猛!

  • Yes--finally!!! They finally put a proper horn on this engine--sounds like an S-3. It's what many of them had originally. Sounds great.

  • I love the sound of that horn!

  • They keep changing the horn on this!! What do they use this for?

  • UP uses the 6936 for their business trains and other specials.

  • An intereating note, they were numbered in the 6900 series because the golden spike centennial was going on, so they EMD russhed the building of the first DDA40X so it could attend the event, and in honor of the occasion it was numbered 6900.

  • Nice catch! I believe this is one of the last types of these engines in existance!

  • i thought UP put the dd40ax out of service

  • All but one!

  • nice, that DD40AX is amazing!

  • How often does UP take 6936 out on runs?

  • Wauw nice video

    Greetz from Holland

  • Nice. I have railfanned around that area before.

  • love the horn i work for the bnsf and i tell ya i seen the 6936 in action and i tell ya i LOVE IT!!!!

  • Yep, I Love it Too!

  • great video...and if u listen to the audio, u can hear quads or dirtbikes!

  • Awesome!!!!!

  • Thanks for the comment!

  • is that bigger than there 90s?

  • DD40AX= 98 feet, 5 inches long, 545,432 lbs

    SD90=80 feet 2 inches long, 415,000 lbs

  • DDA40X = 6,600 horsepower

    SD90 = 6,000 horsepower

  • No sir, you are incorrect, it is not a 6,000 horsepower unit. The DDA40X generates 6,600 horsepower through two turbocharged EMD 16-645E3A prime movers. Take it from a UP employee. Google "DDA40X", you'll get a ton of results that echo the same.

  • to dalanham.... first of all there is no such animal as a DD40X. It's DDA40X. If you would like to see the owner's manual, email me and I'll forward you a copy. Secondly, it has two 3,300 two stroke turbocharged diesels. That equals 6,600 horsepower. You can beg all you want, you're just wrong.

  • @UPTRAIN And remember the time they briefly used 20% injectors to give those beasts 7200 HP! That was quoted from "Giants of the West", a great book dedicated to these mega-diesels.

  • Excellent! Great video and sound quality. Is that a car chasing the 6936 on the first clip?

    You might want to add "DDA40X" and "DD40X" in the Tags to increase search hits, by the way.

  • Thanks! There were a several groups chasing the train that day. If you look closely, there is a group of railfans down by the signal bridge in the distance.

  • Thanks for the comment. If you want to sit in a DD40AX, go to the L.A. county fairgrounds in Pomona, CA.
