I like this interpretation a lot; Gavrilov shows great restraint without sacrificing any drama. I like this etude to be phrased with a little more 'space', and Gavrilov does just this imo.
I really prefer this humble artistic rendition with great subtlety in rubato and inflections, as opposed to the overly exaggerated version. I mean, Gavrilov clearly has transcendental technique, so there's absolutely nothing he needs to prove to anyone in that sense unlike almost all others.
I agree, Gavrilov's sound is absolutely exquisite! So much turbulence and calamity, yet delivered with such poise - how does he do it? He is truly the heir to the great Richter, and this playing is an example of it.
I totally agree with you,Gavrilov expecially in very important records didn't show his transcendental technic but concentrated himself in the best performance he could make.
This is really one of the best. I heared Gavrilov many times and i really love him but this is one of his best recordings. As it was told before... very clever and everything is clear. very very good. Gavrilov dont want to show anything here... just play Rachmaninoff ... thats all .. and thats the best way!
@miliona1re Listen to Horowitz Live (awesome), Van Cliburn, Gilels, Ashkenazy, Lugansky. All of them are very interesting and beautiful perfomances. I prefer Horowitz Live and Van Cliburn, very strong and dramatic.... :)
I heard this etude yesterday with Askenazy and Horowith but i still prefer this version.Gavrilov is an excellent player of Russian composers. He made a very good job.

Since we talking about this level of pianists then i would agree that Horowitz performance excell Gavrilov's which ofcourse is a solid one

Very tame playing. Hard to listen to and appreciate after hearing the turbulence in Horowitz's recordings.

In my opinion it is too organised. The middle part is played great though.
