Why is it that all of us mezzos (I'm a lyric mezzo) get trouser roles? I've already done 3..it's like UGH after while...I'd like for the audience to see me as girl once in a while too! lol
That is part of the irony of pants roles of this time. A beautiful woman dressed as a man...singing about things a "lady" would never actually get to sing. The more effeminate, the less threatening the character is.
OperaBohemian, I see you have 2 minuses, but I have to say I agree with you, and "hormonally challenged" boy is a good way to put it. The quality of her singing is excellent, but as I was listening I almost wished they had painted a bit of a fuzz on her lip to help the image of the adolescent boy getting in trouble with every new girl he sees.
Did you guys look at the year? It was 1966and obviously a totally different style in naturalism of acting. She sings it very well, has a fantastic voice, good technique - and unfortunately is so underrrated.
she is a lyric soprano, although she sang some soubrette parts in her early years (she was rather petite and pretty, so it was also a type question). in figaro she started as cherubino, then sang susanna for many years, and eventually changed to the countess.
And two years later, she would play Susanna (I have the recording)! She is delightful here, with perhaps the only drawback being that her face is too pretty for her to be a boy.

She sings it beautifully, but it's too feminate... she's supposed to be a horomonally challened young boy, not a girl in men's clothing...

This is real quality. I think it is even better than Frederica von Stade's very. (Sorry Flicka fans). I love them both.

She is outstanding.I recommend "Neun deutsche Arien" of Händel

She is a wonderful singer. She recorded a terrific version of "Die Lustigen Weiber von Windsor" with Hannah Schwartz (if I remember rightly).

Is Edith Mathis a Soubrette or a light lyrical soprano? Does anyone know?
