  • nice tut saved me a head ache.

  • Thanks

  • I'm having trouble with the IK with the legs when i move the left foot bone like you did with the IK leg it doesn't move the mesh, whilst the right foot moves both legs

  • Thanks from Germany for sharing your knowledge!

  • this was really helpful thank you

  • You've become my hero

  • can i have this file?

  • how do i get it out of the armiture again? I took the wrong parent mode...

  • one problem with your tutorial you can't move the feet forward wihtout the legs bending backwards

  • awesome helped alot many thanks :)

  • Hi Bugzilla,

I learned how to rig using vertex groups and it didn't work inside my game engine, so I tried using this tutorial (envelopes).

Everything went smooth for the first two videos until you connect the rig to the mesh itself - the bones don't move ALL the vertices.

For example when I move my characters hand, his finger stays in place but the rest of the mesh moves.

Obviously not all the vertices were assigned to a bone.

    My bone alignment is good

    How can I fix this?

    Thanks,

    Jon

  • Whenever i try to move the armature (bound to mesh) bits of the mesh stays behind and drags out.. any advice?

  • Help!!!!!

  • HUGE THANKS! help me alot ! :D

  • `hey buddy great tutorial it helps a lot can you please put the list of the commands that u used in the video and great video thats heads up keep doing tutorials this one is great.

  • can you provide the different parts of the tutorial in each video's description ? having trouble finding part 2

  • Awesome tutorial. Simple and straight forward the way to do it.

That's a nice tip with the IK controller bones and parenting. Easy to setup and gives a quick controllable structure.

  • THANKS IT WORKS WOOOHOOO

  • HOW DO YOU RIG 2 Bones TOGETHER SO ONE IS THE PARENT BUT WHEN CLiCK ON THE NONE PARENT IT BENDS THE MECH TO. HELP BLENDER 2.5beta version

  • @WOWYOUWILLSAY To parent bones you must be in Edit mode, then select the child, then parent, then "Ctrl+p"

  • Your tutorials are very helpful but every time I try to control my character the whole body deforms and I have to reset the whole thing... I can not make his limbs move...I've parented them 10 times and his bones still pop out of his skin!!!! Please help...

  • I've been reading all of your comments and I'm really sorry to have to ask you for help. So many people have been asking you and I feel bad if I'm Asking something someone already asked, but here's the problem: I did this tutorial a few months ago and everything was fine, but recently over the past 3 days I've done it 5 times and once the whole process is done and I've done Active IK for the shins, when I move the IK Solver the legs bend to the right and I can't rotate the legs on the X/Y axes

  • Plus, I can't seem to move other parts of the body either. Not to mention I already cleared the roll by hitting Ctrl + N in edit mode. I really need to know what I did wrong because I used this tutorial before (all three of them) and it seemed to work fine. Thanks :)

  • @Faofaura19 Make sure all the movement channels are unlocked for movement ("n" key to bring up options then check to see that all translation and rotation settings do not have the lock icon indented).

  • hey man i was wondering why you got two bones sticking out in the stomach area? should you not just have a spine?

  • nice tutorial overall. but when i did something similar with my own model, and something not right.... >>

when i go to bend the leg it bend fine! but it bends backwards... >>

how do i get it so it bends at the knee in the correct direction?

  • @wez201102 Make sure the bones are bent in the direction you wish them to bend and that the bone roll is set correcty by selecting all the bones and pressing Ctrl+n

  • AWEESOOOMEE THE FIRST TUTORIAL THAT IS BEING very nicely explained

  • btw the torso dancing was really funny :D tried it out on my own model. ^^

  • thank you so much for your tutorial series! i've watched about 6 tutorials and spent already 2 days with just rigging and skinning and it didn't work. but now my model finally moves so well, i'm really glad about that. thanks, and keep up the good work!

  • Thanks for the insight over these 3 tutorials. Ive not got a very nice comfy rig setup. Been struggling with the basics of rigging for a while, making some good progress now after viewing this and several other rigging tuts.

  • I've been trying to follow this in 2.55 and i've finally gotten some things to move, however parts of the mesh stick in place. Bone movement is stiff...I can't get him to do the squat using the IK Mover, it just moves the whole mesh sans the stuck parts. I've followed several tutorials and yours has gotten me the farthest so far but i still, in three years, have never been able to get a rigging to work correctly. Any ideas?

  • Thank you very much for this tut!~ ^^

I hadn't the slightest clue how to do any of this bone thing at all before watching and it was so easy im feeling way more confident in my future work with blender~ X3

    THANK YOU!~

  • uhhhhh *CLICK* OH NOW I GET IT!

  • Good tutorial, but I wouldn't say it's for beginners, probably for people who have some blender experience but you're gonna need it before you can get close to starting to add armatures anyway. Can you explain to me IK movers? I really don't understand.

  • @I8DEAN8I I don't know what you mean by IK movers. Do you mean the IK constraint or the actual objects being used as the IK targets?

  • @bugzilla2001 I think I'm getting it now. IK constraints connect to IK targets and depend on them for movement?

  • @I8DEAN8I

  • oh dude .. thanks very much... This tutorial is brilliant!!! :)

  • at 1:52 i did that but my legs move inwards instead of out and up.what am i doing wrong?

  • You can do a whole lot of animation with this guy

*does thrusting motion with the hips*

  • Since I created my character using mirror, moving one side with bones in pose mode moves the other, and adding IK constraints just totally messes it up. how would I fix this without deleting one half of my character?

  • @CrateProductions turn off the mirror effect

  • @sodium44 that deletes half of the structure.

  • Thanks, I found these thee tutorials really useful. I am a complete beginner to blender (and 3d modelling as a whole) and was able to rig my character by following this.

  • my characters legs go backwards when i moe them. help D:

  • thats so weird! i select pose mode on my leg but it selects the other leg too! why is this doing that?? :S and when i take weight paint mode on one of the new leg i created it selects the other one and i can't do anything about it :S what should i do?? :(

  • @XxKinoWolfxX Hmmm.sounds like you might have a constraint placed on that bone? Look in the constraint panel and see if there are any constraints pointing to the other bone. Also, make sure the bone is parented to the bone you expect it to be parented to.

  • @bugzilla2001 i'm alittle new in that, can you explane what to do exactly? ><''

  • when i move my arm my leg moves too! how do i fix this!? help . It all went messed up when i move my bones it doesnt even mov the right direction. help! my charcter is deformed help!

  • @teamvideosquad2 Did you see my video on weight painting? It sounds like the bone weights are not set correctly so go into weight paint mode and check to see if everything is working correctly.

  • when i move my arm my leg moves too! how do i fix this!? help . It all went messed up when i move my bones it doesnt even mov the right direction. help!

  • when i move my arm my leg moves too! how do i fix this!? help

  • where do I get bodies that I put the bones into?

  • Hi ! very good tutorial ! I have a question ...if i copy and paste the mirrored pose of the buffer kay ...dont work ! do u know way ?(i wanna make a walk cycle). 10x

  • i am having trouble! i parented the armatures to the mesh but when i move it in pose mode, it would only move the vertices near the ends of the bones

  • does it matter if the armatures are sticking out of the model?

  • @liidan15 You can put the armature anywhere you want, but when you parent the mesh to the armature, the automatic weighting will take into account where the bones are so it's best to have the bones match the mesh as best as possible.

  • @bugzilla2001 ahhh ok i understand...because i was going to try to rig a character from world of warcraft. but i thought..."theres no way to import the character for me to rig it up" lol..so i kinda gave up.

  • @bugzilla2001 Can I replace the old mesh body with a new one keeping the same armature ? If I can, how do I do this ?

  • Man, it really messed my character up the first time, when you had to go back to make the hips wiggable, but this time i watched this part & part 2 at the same time so i wouldn't mess up like you did(no offense) & this rig is the best rig yet !

  • very good set of tutorials i keep it up youre great

  • i tried and tired but this stuff is making me mad i had it soo close and bam everything went wrong. :-(

  • Having a strange problem here. I'm new to animation so bare with me.

I followed up to parenting the object with the bones. After this, when you demonstrated the rotating of the bones, I noticed that when I tried to rotate my bone, the bones would flatten the mesh and stretch other parts. For example, If I was to select the wrist bone and rotate this in pose mode, it would stretch the area around this bone (such as the legs and hips). Any Idea what I'm doing wrong?

  • at 6:36 reparenting IKs or bones in 3DSMax is a NIGHTMARE!!! and as you mentioned it twice, I believe 'lightwave' must be the same hell too.

I'm addicted to set everything I want, and let IK to the end of the process, and keeping a copy of the document BEFORE the IK linking process.

  • This is a really good tutorial, thanks a lot man! Big thumbs up!

  • hi

when i do control p to parent, blender tell me "Needs an active bone" . . . why?

  • The video is recently Missing ?

Anyway Part 1 and 2 are great

    thx

  • I got a Problem, when i click the shift+I everything messes up even when i take out the deform(it gets worse when i take out the deform. When i do shift i the small bone moves out of shape which rotates the character and when i put the deform out it gets worse, any ideas?

  • hahaha that body odor joke was so lame :P but AWSOME tutorial series i loved and i love this rig, thanks man. this introduced me to bone contraints and a good parenting system and all that good stuff. you rock

  • error: bone heat wating: failed to find solution for one or more bones

what does this mean? and when i try to move parts of the mesh, parts of it stay behind and it looks strange?

  • I seem to be having the same problem as others - I built my model using a mirror modifier, and I can't find a way to collapse it. Also, some bits seem to be staying behind when I move them in pose mode. Any way to fix this?

  • @wilmacandfriends Nevermind, I figured it out, you gotta hit "Apply" before parenting the mesh to the armature. And the staying behind parts were extra vertices. But another question: How would I go about rigging fingers?

  • Nice, I got my character rigged quite fine, tho I´d love if you would make the weight paint and animation tutorial too, so I could use my character for my game :P

  • Thanks !!!

  • I followed this tutorial exactly (as far as I know) twice. I applied it to a model I made myself and whenever I pose any part of the arm or leg on the left side, it effects the right side like a mirror (I want them to pose individually, not effected by eachother..). I made the model with a mirror mod I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Can some one help me please? :<

  • @ecasraF Did you "collapse" the mirror modifier by clicking the "Make Real" button next to the modifier? Also, make sure that you have the right vertex map selected in the weight panel if you are editing manually. If you go into Weight Paint mode and select any of the bones you will see what parts of your mesh are affected by each bone.

  • @bugzilla2001 I'm just going to have to mess with it I don't see the make real button. I just started using blender maybe 5 days ago so I'm still very new and confused. Thanks for the help though.

  • Okay, so I've tried fixing this 3 times now, but what seems to happen is when I bind my mesh to the armature through parenting and i hit P to play, only half of my character shows. What should i do?

  • @Manifest222 Why are you hitting p to play? P starts the game engine. Also, if half of your mesh disappears, are you using the Mirror modifier? If so, you might want to hit the Make Real button to collapse that modifier. Save your work before doing so, ok?

  • @bugzilla2001 Exactly, the game engine is what I am using. You can't render a game, you can only really play the game in real-time, which is what I'm doing. How would I get the rig to show up in the bge?

  • I have been using blender for months now nd I have never come across something this helpful before. you go through and explain everything as you go. good jab and thanks.

  • 7:40 LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well, that was funny, but your tutorial... man, you should be a teacher idk.

Amazing tutorial, even I, who don't speak english daily, was able to catch everything right and stuff.

Congratulations that was really good. It'll help a lot of people! :D

  • @milordarkantos lol that bit was funny <D

  • @milordarkantos god that's hilarious

  • thx alot dude :)

  • thx for the tip i would do it but i deleted the model :_(

  • i have a problem parts of my character stays behind when i move it maybe its because my charecter is made from seperate objects but i joiend them together plz help

  • @OwenKolo Go into weight paint mode, select the bones individually and see if there is something not hilighted in red on the mesh that should be, then just weight paint that part.

  • Comment removed

  • nice tutorial. I have one problem though...when I try to move my character it becomes stretchy, like it's made of bubblegum. Do you maybe know what did I do wrong?

  • awesome vid thanks it was funny at 6:44 when you suddenly shout 'torso!' for some reason while you were talking normally :)

  • cool nicely done thanks

  • I can't get everything to stay in edit mode! How can I parent anything when I can't select more than ONE armature!?

  • try joining them all with ctrl+j and then you should be able to parent them in edit mode

  • Thanks, I need all the help I can get!

  • what if your mesh is separated into many pieces how can you apply them all to the bone?

  • Great tutorial! Very well done!!!

  • Very good, clear tutorial!

I'm familiar with rigging, but not in blender and this tut was all I needed :)

    Thank You!

  • Thank you.

  • My knees crosses each other when they bend and the body mesh goes right through the clothes. I have ran out of options on how to fix this and I can't figure out what I need to do to fix it...

  • Why not go and post on the blender forums.

  • OB for OBject. BO for BOne. A bone is not an object, it's just part of an armature object. Hope this helps.

  • @jow and andrea

disable the x-axis mirror in the edit panel of the armature

  • the answer to your question Jowyalbeljoe and andreatorres14

Is... Disable the X-mirror axis from the edit panel of the armature

  • I tried that but no luck thanks anyway

  • I'm having the same problem has andreatorres14 how to you fix it? cause when i move one hand the other moves too why? what have I done and how can I fix this sorry for asking so much questions.

  • Hi! Thanks for your tutorial!! But i have a question, when i move one foot, the other one tends to move too like if it was attached or attracted to it somehow, thats not normal! Could you help me to solve this please?

  • You shoud check your weight painting... it sometime hapends if 2 limbs are close to another..

  • Man this is good tutorial :D:D Good job!

  • how do u get the bones to bend mine won't bend am I doing something wrong? plz help me any body

  • thnks u !!

    very good tuto (Y)

  • What i try to add IK Constraint it says IK Root can not be linked to IK Tip, please reply :(!!!

  • Oh I fixed it:D I just deselected deform in the neck and that way the face remains the way it should be:D

  • There is only one realy problem I still have with this, my characters had deforms when I move or rotate it:P Any ideas?XD

  • I don't understand what you mean. The model is supposed to deform when you move or rotate the bones.

  • I mean that per example the jaw moves slower than the forehead:P Or that his eyes stay behind when looking from left to right:P

  • I was wondering if you know how to fix it if one the right set of the arms moves both arms and the left moves the chest armor and cloak i have on her. the right arm arm also moves the the pants but not the legs?

  • Yes. You need to paint the weights for each bone. I will be doing a tutorial on this soon.

  • SUPERB!!!!

  • Have to say, this is the best basic rigging tutorial I've found.

  • thxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx thx thx man aaaaaalooooot!

  • Dude I Really Apreciate this tutorial I waz messin Around For like 3 hours trying to figure this out, Now i dont feel lik breakin somthin :D

  • like the tutorial very helpfu! will you be adding the weight paint tut with regards to this one?

  • Thank you, thats a very nice tutorial,i've seen very complicated rigging from other artists, specially in the leg/foot area ,but your rigging method is quite simple and effective.nice work!

  • Both of the knees on my character moves to the left. How do I fix that?

  • Did you select all bones the hit Ctrl+n to clear the bone roll? This is an important step. I will spin all the bones in the right direction.

  • I did that already, but the Knees still move to the left. I may have to redo them again.

  • Nevermind, I fixed it. I just had to align the joints a certain way.

  • When i try to move my guys arms both of them move and the armatures on the left stay in place. plus when i do it, like right where the thumb is pointing his thighs strecht out toward were ever his hand/arm gos. help please! (nice tutorial though!)

  • I'm not quite getting what you mean. It sounds like some parts of your model are moving with the wrong bones? In that case, select the mesh, then choose the Weight Paint option from the Mode list. Press 'n' to bring up the weight paint options, then right click on each bone that is giving trouble. Add ,Substract and Smooth your weights until they look good.

  • well, i already tryed the weight paint thing and its still hapening. the model isnt exactly moveing with the wrong bones its just that when i move the right arm the left one moves to and the armatures on the left arm stay in place when it moves. And when i move it the thighs stay in place but the mesh streches towrd the arm. (the legs dont work right either).

  • I would think OB is object, and BO is bone, just a thought ;)

  • Finally! After busting my brains out on Rigging the armature for over a week, It only took me almost half a hour to get it done. ^_^ Horray!

  • very good tutorial but there is something bad happening to my character when i move it is seems that is made up of water or i dont know !!!!help!!! i think hahahah

  • It's impossible to say what the problem is from what you say here. I suggest you post the .blend file on some of the Blender forums. Or make a video showing what you have done.

  • I've never has good luck with any Direct X exporter in Lightwave or Blender. If you must use Direct X, you are better off exporting to the COLLADA format and then using some program like Direct Explorer to convert it to Direct X. Unity accepts Blender projects natively with the armatures.

  • thank you! this is a very2 great tutorial!!

  • if i make the arms with two bones , will it move like an elbow? or do i just have to be really carefull?

  • I'm not sure I know what you mean about the elbow. You can rotate the bone at the top of the chain so you point the knee or elbow in your case. Also, you can add a Pole Target so you can point the elbow by moving that bone.

  • i mean the elbow is only supposed to rotate on one axis, like a hinge instead of a ball and socket. and how do you record the renders?

  • You lock the rotation for the other directions. In pose mode, select the bone and press N. Click the little buttons to lock variables (location, rotation scale). If you lock 2 of the rotations, then it will only be movable on the other one.

  • As far as rendering goes, look in the scene tab for Output. The first directory is where it saves animations. Under Format, you can change the dimensions and the filetype. When you have things set up, you can click animate and it will save the animation in the folder you chose with the filetype you chose. For single renders, just press F12 to see your render, then press F3 and choose a save location.

  • thanks, but i found a web source about that yesterday. and for the bone thing, does the xyz rotation options have to be parented to the bone so it doesnt lock the global xyz?

  • hey when i try move move my persones arm hes bone only moves..what do i have to do? help pleas!!!

  • you need to do more blender 3d tutorial pleas, i love blender , if you wold make a fan film short in blender that'ed be sweet

  • Absolutely fantastic tutorial mate =) Really clear voice and instructions. You've helped me a lot =)

    5 Stars

  • hah, woops. I did all that, and just when I was parenting the bones and the model together, I accidentally hit just "P," instead of CTRL + P, and that starts the blender game engine which crashed my scene.

  • if it happens again press escape and itll exit, same with a render thats taking too long

  • i think he means blender crashed when the ge started

  • Thank you!!! the best rigging tutorial!!!!

    Helped me a lot!!!!

  • Thank you very much! Great tutorial! I have been having a lot of difficulty figuring out the armature especially trying to understand the Armature Modifier for objects which is apparently a bit new and absolutely boggles me. This is a good alternative until I can find how all these newish features work. The documentation said it was easy with no need to parent but I have no idea how to do it.

  • This is an excellent tutorial. But when will the final / next one come out?

  • I have watched a lot of videos and if you sell a series i would buy it thank you.

  • Super video! Helped me a lot :)

  • oh sorry i click on the #1 star by accident when i was rating this video i was gonna rate it 5. xD man i failed lol

  • BO: stands for Bone Object

  • With this tutorial it´s very easy to learn character rigging, thank you for this!

  • thank you! this is the best tutorial in the world :D

  • only u could do this with blender
