Every time I hear this song I'm reminded of my first real teenage crush whose name was Mandy but the object of my crush didn't feel the same way. :( Still this remains my favourite song by 10cc, except maybe Rubber Bullets.
i used to listen to this when i was 8 years old :). still sounds great today..brilliant music...thanks for posting...oh and if your wondering im 41 now. :)
I was fortunate enough to see them play live before the weekend of the SUNDERLAND INTERNATIONAL AIR SHOW and they played ALL their hits AND more, although it ISNT the original line up,, WOW,, ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT,, sound quality was magnificent, my friends and I are STILL talking about it (6 month on),, SHEER CLASS,, P.S. if you EVER get a chance to see 10cc,,,, DONT waste it,,
I was looking for a tab of this song and discovered this guy's amazing site. Lots of 10cc I haven't found elsewhere. These sound pretty accurate to my ear... Google "gartfrets" to get the site, then navigate to "partnerships a-j".
For 4 years, from 1972-76, 10cc were at the top of their game. It is hard to describe how sophisticated the four were as songwriters. The melodies and harmonies were exquisite; the lyrics were intelligent, funny, ironic and poignant. (How do you describe a plane-crash in two lines? "The world was spinning like a ball / And then it wasn't there at all." ) That these songs are as fresh today as they were in the 70s illustrates how they were light-years ahead of anything that was happening then.
Thanx for posting this song. This is one of the best and most underrated prog rock songs of all time. I love the harmonies, the entire structure. It should have gotten heavy rotation here on American album rock stations.
My mom got this album when Star Wars came out, and after going to the theater countless times, and playing the piss out of How Dare You, they meshed together so one reminds me of the other
wore the grooves outta this disc. this tune is so beatley so mccartneyish vocals. this is clever pop rock...nothing like it today...oooh the strumming interlude and the devastating lead solo.....puff puff
Just a fantastic mysterious song with a brilliant guitar break. This has so many memories for me. I listened to the How Dare You album all the way through the hot Summer of 1976 and was absolutely gutted when I heard that Godley and Creme had left the band.
What a great free plug for British Airways--(BOAC) as was. I remember that terrific Poster of theirs--'I'm Mandy-Fly me' of course there were other variations of that plea--by the great British Public. This was a world wide hit--so both parties were happy--I bet rival airlines weren't.
A few months ago at work, a few of us were discussing 70s music and when we got onto the subject of 10cc we all agreed that this was our favourite track which suprised me because it's not their best known.
I LOVE THIS SONG!......want to know some juicy gossip about 10cc that they dare not print in the magazines.....go to "hey st peter gnowangerups70s" and read my 3 comments. regards.
If we only had C.D. you would see all four pains. The couple one the photo, on the bottom, frame of the pain. Are the same one's in the Red Car in the upper frame. The bcke 2 frames will show them hidden Thanks E.C. and T.B.
@birdinxxx Also in the inside of the album cover..It showed the woman who's crying...possibly having taken an OD and an ambulance outside the window
The back cover showed them outside a phone box waiting to make a call with what I always believed was a man making a dirty phonecall..He had a sneer on his face lol.
I remember this was number one spring of 1976 - shortly before my family moved back to the states. I couldn't listen to it enough. Haunting, beautiful. Thank God for great old gems like these resurfacing as mp3s.
Really a very great song with much variety in it, it just wont bore you, i can listnen this 24/7 , the best song of 10cc, i also like dreadlock holiday holiday , but this song has something more, its like an exciting movie that is turned into music, a complete masterpiece :D
these guys were the kings of slick production, way ahead of their time. Just listen to where that beat is in the mix, so unconventional.. awesome band
@Jibkopatha ,,,, In no particular order my top 10 harmony acts are The Beatles, Bee Gees, 10cc, The Everly Brothers, Pink Floyd, Queen, The Moody Blues, Crosby Stills & Nash, The Beach Boys, The Temptations
leaving it at 10 made me leave off a number of Top class doo wop acts and motown artists and let us not forget Simon & Garfunkel, The Byrds, & another of yours The Alan Parsons Project.
The first girl I fell in love with when I had raging hormones was named Mandy. It wasn't reciprocal but this song always reminds me of her. I remember this song was a commercial for British Airways.
Thanks for posting, been feeling a little bit nostalgic today and started recalling songs from my childhood. Although I liked this song at the time its only with hind sight you realize just how amazing this was. To produce songs of such harmononious melodies, string arrangements and vocals, with technology that compared with what is available today is relatively stoneage, shows just what a fantastic band 10 cc were. The live performances are the closest thing to studio quality of any band.
Do you know something, i just discovered 10cc again after buying all their albums in the 70s and this year have seen them twice on the uk tour and guess what, they were brilliant. Go see them if you get a chance.
why dont these so called pub bands try n play this,. ,.tell you what no chance ITS MUSIC IS TO HARD N TO CLEVER FOR ORDINARY PUB BANDS,. rant over lol
Music was a lot more interesting back then, it holds my attention more than modern music. You never knew where the next musical bar would take you. I wouldn't say I knew a lot of their music back then apart from the obvious but listening nowadays its an enjoyable musical journey as there is so much back catalogue to enjoy and discover.
it reminds me of 1976, making model aircraft....if i smell Humbrol paint and hear this, I am taken way back (or maybe it was sniffing the modelling glue)
Crap day for whitevanwoman, truck broke down on the A42 (again); then got in & surprise surprise found out from boyfriend he had got tickets for 10cc concert soon, so played this track 5 times and life seems a whole lot better now, fantastic, won't need quite such a big whisky after all!!

From the underrated masterpiece CD "How Dare You'... One of my top 5 favs of 10cc. Genius. In 1976 I helped my older brother paint a high detailed ceiling in an old house from the 1800s, and we played this album over and over again...laughing everytime in this song it says 'the sharks are coming for me'.. God... they were so good.
i saw ten cc live in 1973 at the hostel in hereford when i was in the army and they blew me away with the way they held an audience and there music was and still is sensational
my fave 10cc song. based on the silly ad campaign with airline stewardesses saying, "I'm Mandy/Cindy, fly me", which was seen as very sexually provocative at the time..
@minimeowly And another theory, Mandy relates to Mandrax, an illicit drug of the 70s , a "barb" and it relates a "bad trip" , with the references to "Rolling stones" being there to give you a hint. He met his Mandy , started to take his trip, he was flying (high) then he was coming down (crashed) he felt she (Mandy) was coming to help. Did he have another ? Was "Mandy" as nice to see ast that point as the girl from Dr No? Not my theory but having been around at the time it could be.

I've gotta agree, next to ELO, 10 cc are severely underrated aren't they?
At the age of 43, I'm kinda kicking myself for not listening to them more.
