I have just read Harrers report on their 38 climb. This surely is not the same route, as just one ice field took 5 hours back then. I think a vertical accent of the face would take some doing in the time given. I am of course strictly an armchair climber but love the Eiger and its history.

In '38 they climbed it in summer when it's more rock. They had primitive gear and technique, and were climbing belayed with ropes. Steck climbed it in winter when it's more snow and ice, and he climbed it "free solo" un-belayed most of the way, much faster. Plus he's an Olympic caliber athlete.

It's the same route. Saw him talk at the Kendal Mountain Film Festival last week - stunning stuff. If you get the chance, go and see him, not only exceptional climbing but a good talker too.

100% surely steck does his speed record on the heckmair route. The same like Harrer does in 38...
