I think the head-rubbing thing means he wants his head rubbed or scratched. A lot of birds like that. I think it was really cute when Daedalus would sometimes hop with his fetch.
is that first bird a Quaker? (i think u said that? not sure) and how old is he/she? my quaker is kind of scared of the clicker sound lol is that normal in the beggining?
Both of my birds are caiques. It is normal for birds to be startled by the clicker noise at first. You can use something that makes a softer noise, like a retractable pen or a bottle cap with a pop-up button. You'll also want to associate the noise with lots of good things: every time the bird hears the noise, he should get a great treat. Soon he won't be afraid anymore.
Yes, of course it hurts when a bird bites you. The best way to deal with this is to avoid provoking the bird to bite in the first place. Learn to read the bird's body language so you can tell when it's uncomfortable, and then make sure you don't make it upset. Instead, associate yourself with positive things, like food and treats. Earn the bird's trust.
Every parrot has different tastes, so it really depends on your specific bird. My parrots will work for many different treats, including pieces of banana chip, seeds and pieces of nuts, sips of juice, bites of bread, and licks of almond butter. The best way to determine what treats your bird will work for is to do a treat test: Offer him what you think are his five favorite foods on the same plate and see what he goes for first, second, and third. Only give him those foods during training.
Are you asking if the bird is biting my hand at the beginning? If so, no, he is not biting. Caiques like to "surf", or rub their beaks and heads on soft things. Icarus prefers to surf on hands.
awe, I love his little hop when he brings you some toys, how cute! Some of those toys he was like "phew, this is heavy!" What a bunch of cuties! I want a bird some day
I use many different treats to train my birds. The ones I use the most are small pieces of banana chips (dried, unsweetened bananas), small pieces of nuts, and sesame seeds. The real key is not what treat you use, but what method you use to train the tricks. I use clicker training, which works very well and very quickly. My favorite bird training books are Getting Started: Clicker Training for Birds and The Bird School. Good luck with your caique!
That head rubbing thing, have you ever left wet greens out for them? Mine go nuts after any sort of freshy washed salad dive boming into it and head rubbing in the exact same way as on your fingers.
my sisters parakeet is named icarus

chocoohogger123 1 year ago
wow, lots of training time i imagine.
are they love birds or are they just similar? i never throught you could train love birds.
and about the fetch- my dog doesn't even do that!
YamboMuzeek 2 years ago
My birds are caique parrots, which are bigger than lovebirds. However, love birds can learn the same tricks. Any type of parrot can be trained.
cmoore1608 2 years ago
yes, i thought they were bigger. they have similar colouring though.
hmm i should have tried training the lovebirds back when I lived in a hot country and had about 70 of them... breed like rabbits...
