Talk. Slower. Darling, I know you're all famous and whatnot, and even when I don't agree with your treatises, I enjoy them, but HOLY HELL TALK SLOWER.
love robert weede love this opera lesson. i found someone who knows and agrees with me!!!!! love opera singers who sing in english. opera singers are great. where can i hear the robert weede ? what a voice and there was no stereo then. i want hear hear the entire great recording with the opera singers. "My ROmance" sung by Jan Peerce is great on youtube. ROGHARM i love your EXAMPLES. OBSESSED TOO. But i grew up with quality musical singing. remember aged 65???!!!
HAHA! ohhh, those sopranos. you know, i agree, there's a point where we can't sing consonants or the vowels will close up, but you could at least PRETEND to!
Then again, I'm working on "Out of my dreams" and optioning up, so instead of "with you" i end up with "waaath yaaa"
Seth, I love you. Thank you for giving the seal of approval that we opera-trained singers are an asset to the Broadway musical. You are now officially my new bff.

What you call "scooping" has been called "le phrasé" in France for the past 150 years. It's phrasing, darling. You might also want to look into "mélisme".
ragtime is so amazing. ahh. that show makes me wish i was a soprano
sadly, i can only play an immigrant due to my physical appearance and my vocal range...
but oh boy is the piano ending of that song FIERCE. i must look in my ragtime book to see if that piano part is in there!
o.m.g.
the "happy man" thing with the sopranos - hilarious. HILAR.
a musical director i worked with once told the sopranos: "forget about your diction when you sing high, ladies! just say vowels! consonants mean nothing!"
If you open the songs with Quick Time, you can have all the songs in separate windows so that you can drag the clips to the exact start times before you start recording your video instead of shuffling around in iTunes.
I believe that's Marin singing that note. Audra is probably also singing it but I remember seeing the mini version on Rosie O'Donnell Show and Marin was hitting the note...just an FYI...I could be wrong.
You also do an excellent discription of "trained" singing. Not necessarily "Opera" singing. A lot of crooners do the same thing. It's about placement and vowels and phrasing. Which unfortunately is missing from most of theatre today.
Love you Seth! Weede is doing a what's called in Italian a portamento - as you say on the dipthong ah-ee to get the vowel into the right place. The portamento is used to glide the voice from one vowel to the next. It keeps the "line" going.
What the sopranos were doing in the Most Happy Fella cut is vowel modification. Basically, they drop the consonants so the voice can soar on the vowels over that big orchestra without the benefit of mics.
I always thought the woman doing the scooping at the end was Marin! OMG!

Another amazing version of opera scooping --
When Julia Murney (<3) sings "Defying Gravity", on "Is ever gonna bring me down", she sings "gonna bri--HING me down" and does this amazing scoop.
And George Hearn's voice is to die for.

I am very proud of my self for actually noticing the opera scoop at the end of ragtime. And while on the subject of Ragtime, I LOVE the picalo part.
