Better grab a Garand while you can. The best deal out there is to get one directly from the Civilian Marksmanship Program. CMP is selling out!
Prices at gun shows are off the chart. The CMP sells Garands for less than $700 shipped directly to your door, except if you live in NJ. Thank Mr. Christie for that.
Seriously, check the CMP webpage for more info. You need to join an CMP affiliated club like the M1 Collectors Club or your State Rifle Association. NRA members do not qualify.
To think that your on the wrong end of a 30-06 yet close enough to here that ping... it ain't good for the bad guys... but that's WAR! General G. Patton said "The two most important implements in ending WWII was the jeep and the M1Garand rifle" Thank you Mr Garand, "Canada's favorite son" for the battle rifle that won the War on all fronts.
Well, I believe it's going to be a little while until I get mine. I have to buy an old Bronco to drive around and chase cattle in. We are retiring the POS mail Jeep. Fucker.
The key to preventing Garand thumb is proper implementation of the bolt. Simply assure the bolt is retracted firmly and completely to the rear. Experiment with your bolt. You should find that the bolt can be retracted to a position that gives the impression it is fully retracted, when it is not. This is the Garand thumb position.
You only get M1 Thumb if you aren't paying attention. When you're loading at the range, you're not gonna get it. When you're sitting on the couch fondling your newly acquired M1 Garand and watching TV at the same time not paying attention, you'll probably get it.
@1shot2kilu Ever bites your thumb and you will not forget that either.... my first M1 Thumb was 1969 .... still hurts ! That day I realized how much I missed my Blankie .
One time at the range a guy next to me was shooting one I put down my SKS and got a.bit.closer...he turned around after and asked if everything was ok... I told him I just HAD to hear that sound...then we both started.cracking up.....pure bliss
go for points on paper. just pick a target that has a 10 ring and an x ring in the center. the nra 25 yard pistol target would be good but you may have to shorten it to 100yds
the germans listened for that sound then rushed the troops. but the troops kept empty clips to lure them out bu bouncing it off something. then they would shoot them... nice rifle btw. now make a vintage rifle competition video. nothing special, 200 yds standing or sitting.
@danthman114 Whoa, that's a very bold statement. I would like to see a source on that, because in a lot of environments the sound of a 30-06 will drown the ping.
Plus, during combat there would be a lot of firing from both sides and pinging from the American side.
I doubt you could hear the pings during intense combat.
Well, if you had a fight coming, and you had those. You got out numbered, you had to be stealthy, if the people attacking, knew what you had, they would know when you was out. That would be the perfect weapon to take to shtf, or zombie apocalypse.
@gilyardk Yeah, I still think it is the perfect gun for a shtf, or zombies 30-06 go through several zombies, if you get the steel core ammo might go through more than one. .223 5.56 would take out one guy.
Nice rifle, but I cringe every time I see a rifle laid on its bolt.

@millerusaf show an clean target and walk back then shoot slow fire loading single rounds. 10 rounds
danthman114 1 month ago
@danthman114 Sounds like a plan. I'm gonna find some good, common targets. I could do that this weekend if the weather isn't too crappy.

@millerusaf or use a print off target so everyone can print one off. ill send you the link to put up on the video.
