When playing games on the Gen-X such as Street Fighter 2 Special Champion Edition and Samurai Shodown (Genesis), I notice that some of the character sprites turn into a mess of pixels. I have played both of these games on the Genesis Model 2 and that doesn't happen. I have noticed that when playing a game for an extended period of time, sometimes the controller won't respond to the button commands, so I need to shut the system off and then turn it back on for the controller to work properly.
well and that is also false. because of the headphone jack (and i just read this yesterday), there is a better sound chip in the model 1. It has more bass and treble as to where the models 2 and 3 are flat
@Retro1Gamer The model 1 has better audio than the model 2, as for the video quality. I am not too sure because I have a model 1 and sadly I have to RF it since I lost my AV cables :/
On the video, it's hard to hear. In actuality, the channel that produces that sound is just at a lower volume than everything else. When you are playing it at home, you really won't notice much of a difference.
Yes it does! However, the D-Pad on the controllers don't work. In order to get them working, you have to take a soldering iron to the system. I'm currently working on a fix to use original Genesis and Master System controllers on the Gen-X(that's the only way you can play Master System games on the Gen-X - modify the system to accept Genesis and Master System controllers).
Don't go for a Model 2. Get a Model 1. The 32X will work on it, and it also has VASTLY superior audio and video quality compared to a Model 2(most Model 2s have pixelated video with Top-Loader NES-style noise and audio that is FILLED with static). Make sure that the Model 1 Genesis says "High Definition Graphics" to make sure you get the very best Genesis experience.
Not if you make the conversion cable yourself. I can give you instructions on how to make your own Genesis Model 1 to 32X conversion cable if you find a 32X that doesn't come with its conversion cable.
You really should. HOWEVER: be advised that certain Genesis Model 1s are just as bad as the Model 2 minus the shitty picture quality. Send me a Personal Message and I'll tell you which Genesis Model 1s to avoid.
is it hard to s-vid a model 1 Genesis?.... and yes i do see what you mean with the poor video output of the model 2 the model 3 had a tad better vid quality but the audio was just as bad
Your Genesis 3 had bad audio??? I heard no static whatsoever when my Genesis 3 was working.
S-Video on the Model 1 isn't too difficult. Send me a Personal Message and I'll tell you how to get S-Video out of the Genesis Model 1(NOTE: with the method I send, you will not be able to use S-Video with the 32X).
That's exactly what I was going to say. And the Genesis 3 also plays imports without modification because of the square cartridge slot, and without lockout problems or a switch most of the time. GenX can't play region-coded PAL games. With the exception of the slightly crisper A/V, I wouldn't bother with this.
Actually, it DOES work with Master System games, but they're unplayable because the Gen-X is incompatible with original accessories and the D-pad on the Gen-X controllers don't respond to any presses. On top of that, 2 of my games After Burner(SHIT!) and Global Defense don't work at all on the Gen-X(black screen).
"the D-pad on the Gen-X controllers don't respond to any presses."
Let me rephrase that. Pressing the D-pad while playing a Master System game doesn't result in the Gen-X registering an input from it. You can use the B and C buttons as Master System buttons 1 and 2, but the D-pad doesn't work.
I checked this thing out. Its okay. The Sound and the color are a little off and the least amount of money was put into the manufacturing as possible but it does work. The thing cost around 30 or 40 bucks so I cant complain to much I got what I Paid for.
Sound is off because of a shitty mixing circuit causing scratching and distortion, kinda what certain Model 2 Genesis systems suffered from, but was limited to static. I'm currently working on a fix for that.
As for color, I don't know if there's any way to fix the slight green tint in the image other than altering the settings on your TV. I think the green color signal may be stronger than blue and red, I don't know.
uhh you can get stereo through an RF connection. the only advantage seperate audio offers is if you want to run to an amp.
also, the gen-x looks similiar to a model 3 genesis not model 2,
and richterEX2, an RGB connection would give little improvement other than maybe better color accuracy. NES and Genesis were natively interlaced signals. your tv would have to deinterlace either way.
the controllers that came with the gen-x system are cheap pieces of crap. i am trying to find some that will fit besides the one that came with the system. =/
Good luck, because I don't know of any that actually work in there other than maybe those of the GN Twin. Original accessories are a no-go, as even if you cut part of the plug to make them fit, the Gen-X won't register any inputs.
Hate to be a nitpicker again, but Mortal Kombat didn't do the whole "press start to switch between punches and kicks" thing, that was the Genesis version of Street Fighter II (Special Champion Edition). In MK on Genesis, with a 3 button controller, the start button was block, and you had to press back+LP to do high punches.
Since you use a Genesis controller to play NES games, did they map the buttons appropriately? I find this is a detail most often messed up on things like this. To play an NES game the "A" button should be on the right side and "B" on the left. What button acts as select?
NES button configuration works like this: A=A, B=B, C=A+B(A is pressed first), X=turbo A, Y=turbo B, Z=Turbo A+B(A is pressed first). Really odd button layout.
The system's accuracy is quite bad on the NES side, and has worse compatibility than my FC Twin.
The Genesis side is pretty good, but 3 games have laggy controls on the Gen-X, making them unplayable. Virtua Racing DOES work on it, as does the 32X, but not fully(you'd have to physically modify the unit). Sound accuracy isn't so good.
Some FM channels are too loud, to the point where the sound scratches like certain Model 2s did. Also, PSG is nearly impossible to hear! It really ruins games like Thunder Force IV(Lightening Force), where some of the music is missing. Overall, the Gen-X is all right, but nothing more.
I doubt it would look very good. It only uses composite video, which may look decent on an interlaced TV, but would look terrible on an HDTV. You need RGB video from a game console for it to look good an HDTV. If they put in some way to get RGB out of it, then it would look nice.
I second to that. I like this system, but what's holding me back is if it works with Virtua Racing. Since this is pretty much a carbon-copy(design-wise) of a Genesis 3, if it has better functionality, I'll get the Gen-X ASAP.
If you ask me, instead of NES compatibility, they should have added Master System compatibility to make this a full Sega clone, just like the Retro Duo is a full Nintendo clone (NES/SNES).
1:15 "for the hardcore gamers we compiled a little something extra" WE? haha.. like he invented the thing or something.. come on.. they just import these from China.
One thing you didnt answer, Does it play Castlevania 3? Many of these clone/nes-on-a-chip systems can not play castlevania 3 at all. Others have major problems playing certain games 100% correctly and most dont play the sound 100% right causing certain sound effects to sound slightly different (only someone who has played an real console would notice)
Is this console only compatible with Japanese Mega Drive games or does it play UK Mega Drive games too? In other words is it Japanese NTSC or Japanese PAL? If it's Japanese PAL it can probably play UK PAL as well. I was just wondering...
I just got mine today and while I think it's a really nice combo system, there's something that you neglected to mention in your review that most people buying the system for NES titles should be aware of. On the Gen X the controller buttons are A,B. For gamers who have spent the past 20 years playing classics like Super Mario Brothers 1-3, or Punch Out the placement of RUN and JUMP, or LEFT PUNCH/ RIGHT PUNCH will sadly be reversed.
... HOWEVER, I've found that the C button serves as a "macro" button which is permanently programmed as A+B. Now, the catch is that for any NES game that does not use an A+B combination as a command, you can in fact use it as JUST the A button, in most cases, correcting the A,B placement situation. Don't get me wrong, NES gameplay is NOT crippled due to the controller, but like any clone system, you'll have to deal with minor inconsistencies.
I think this console is a wonderful invention...a peace offering to Console War veterans of the 90's. Sega and Nintendo together for the first time. If either of my Sega Genesis's crap out on me, I may purchase one of these and maybe I'll discover a new world of games through the NES part of this great console.
I own SplatterHouse 2-3 for Genesis. Love those games! All in all nice system. Any news of somone putting out a Sega CD compatable? That has to be my favorite system of all time. 3DO was ok, but my heart belongs to Sega.
Huh, my 1st post didn't go up. Weird. This was my 2nd post. Well here's a 3rd one restate what my 1st one said. The Gen X looks exactly like the Genesis 3 not 2. Aaaaa.sit on it! Actually Mr. Neo Geo I am from New York & it's a NY accent. And guess what? It is a new system for us! The unit was re-tooled by our factory to work with US NES games. We worked hand in hand within regards to redesign & marketing. We also made sure it worked with NES games that were a problem with other NES playing units.
Eh, the video is somewhat informative, I'll give you that. However, the worthless tangential information just shows how self-important the guy in the video is. We get that you're proud of your gaming knowledge, but we don't need to hear about how Knuckles can climb walls in Sonic 2, when we're only watching this video to see if the console works as expected. ;)
yeah, I want to know too, because, if it isn't, I'm not sure I want to buy one, I always want to be able to buy new controllers if I need to and some games require the 3 button to work.
Whoops, am I bad..yes ur right it's closer to the Model 3 design. But honestly I was just trying to say that it's an overall smaller design. But I guess you get the idea.
I could already tell from the Contra clip that the sound is off. Just because it's actual hardware doesn't mean the sound is accurate. A lot of emulators these days actually do way better than the NOAC stuff.

We worked hand in hand within regards to redesign & marketing. We also made sure it worked with NES games that were a problem with other NES playing units.

Eh, the video is somewhat informative, I'll give you that. However, the worthless tangential information just shows how self-important the guy in the video is. We get that you're proud of your gaming knowledge, but we don't need to hear about how Knuckles can climb walls in Sonic 2, when we're only watching this video to see if the console works as expected. ;)

i dont like the way the controller feels and wanted to ask you guys if the system is compatible with original genesis controllers any one know?
spudbud4 4 years ago
yeah, I want to know too, because, if it isn't, I'm not sure I want to buy one, I always want to be able to buy new controllers if I need to and some games require the 3 button to work.

Could anyone tell me if it plays european Mega Drive games aswell, or does it only play american and japanese games?
I mean it´s not called "Mega Drive" only in Japan...

I'll see if I can find a European Mega Drive cart around, but I'm not sure if we actually have any. I will let you know tomorrow evening.

How large is the GOAC motherboard? Do you have any pictures of this beast open?

"o" doesn't stand for original, it stands for "overseas" meaning "not Japan"

spudbud4 4 years ago
Whoops, am I bad..yes ur right it's closer to the Model 3 design. But honestly I was just trying to say that it's an overall smaller design. But I guess you get the idea.

is this compatible with sega cd?
kcchiefsfan1981 4 years ago
It is not compatible with the Sega CD because it does not have an expansion/bay port for it to connect the Sega CD attachment.

How is the sound on the games?
Any noticeable changes?
Looks great!

It's running on actual hardware, not emulation, so it all sounds just as good as it did on the original systems.
videogamecentral 4 years ago
I could already tell from the Contra clip that the sound is off. Just because it's actual hardware doesn't mean the sound is accurate. A lot of emulators these days actually do way better than the NOAC stuff.
