@FSPRofLStomP as if there's anything wrong with that. The 2.5L in the Mazda 3 makes 167 hp and even the 2.5 5-cyl in the jetta makes 170 HP. its on the higher end of its class.
And if you're trying to compare it to a Civic Si, don't bother. This competes with the regular civic. A top line Koup SX with manual goes for roughly 19K which is more than 1K less than the cheapest Civic EX.
@FSPRofLStomP its a 2.4 #1. And yes there is a point, its called Torque. Take the Civic Si for example, the old 2.0 had 197 HP but only 140 Torque whereas the new 2.4 has 201 HP but 170 Torque. Torque is more important in daily driving as well because that's what gives the extra passing power and better acceleration. Even in the current Accord and CRV, they have 177 HP as well out of their 2.4s so nothing wrong with the Horsepower since they also have plenty of torque

this is the thing i hate about some people, always underestimating cars for their rubbish badge, the forte koup is one of the best cars from kia, in fact, its one of the best cars to have if you're just got your licence, i rather drive this, than be seen in a civic like everyone else, im no kia fan but i can tell you that the koreans are slowly dominating the family car market both in terms of quality and performance, but mostly bang for buck...any car enthusiast knows that..

Just so you know the Forte Koup just won Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge driver and team championship. Honda civic team came in second. A VW Golf after that, and then a Mini. BTW I drive a Honda Prelude. Kia's coming up. Its like honda in the early 90's when everyone was still shitting on them.
This car looks like it's about to fall apart. I looked at this car when I went car shopping, after test driving a bunch of different cars in the class I setlled with a Mazda 3. nothing beat the handling of that car.. just feels so right.
My 2011 Koupe with the 2.4 auto 6 runs in the low 15s, Point it and she moves. Handles very nice on wet-dry and corners nice. At 120mph she is easy. I recommend as the Dealer noted when he delivered it to my house. Go get yourself a Radar-Lasar unit with some of those C-notes you got left. 24k custom ordered . @kim Sorry to hear about your mom's troubles with Hyundai. I have had the exact opposite experience. My Hyundais have been by far the most reliable and inexpensive to own vehicles I have owned. My 2008 Subaru has been one of the more expensive cars to own....oil sending unit failed and almost blew the engine after only 33k miles, for instance. On My Hyundai Elantra I had one problem in the 6 years I owned it, and that was covered under warranty.

@betterdropdatdonk I'll give you that it's main target was younger youth that want something different from the normal Japanese compacts (Civics, Integras, tCs, Evos, etc) and the front lights do look similar. But that new futuristic style of thin head and tail lights I have been seeing on almost all new compact 4-Bangers regardless of the brand. Overall to me (besides the headlights) it doesn't look anything like a Civic. Comeon, Kia has stepped up big time and they deserve some credit.

Believe me, they've made immense strides since the dark early days. I'd trust them more now than any "American" make. i drive this exact car. it does look like the civic from the front, but the rear end looks sharp as glass. its quick AND has excellent gas mileage. i "race" a lot on the interstate, and the only thing i have lost to is a mercedes. i highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a great all around vehicle

ok let me explain the sloppy manual comment. The throttle is a drive by wire so its much harder to get a feel when starting in 1st gear. I test drove an automatic and manual and the manual is frustrating to say the least. you almost never get a smooth start. If you look at reviews for the car its a common complaint, so its not just my driving so dont hate on me. Also when downshifting you cant engine break, or downshift to slow down, it seems to just increase RPM's and not slow down the car
@SeadGBosnia sorry but it is. I test drove a 2012 Civc EX and 2011 Forte Koup SX just yesterday and the forte dominates. Better interior quality, more features for the money, and you can't forget the 100K warranty either.

@SeadGBosnia The cars are sorted into classes by their PRICE and SIZE, not their HP. There aren't 2 compact car classes that further divide the cars by horsepower. The Forte, Elantra, Civic, Cruze, Mazda 3, Jetta/Golf, and Scion tC are all cross shopped due to the fact they're all similar in price.
@techdude6693 the koup is priced in between a civic ex (around 19k CAD) and an Si (26k CAD) civic and that is exactly what it is...it is better equipped and faster than a civic ex but not as good as an Si. Equipment might be similar to the Si but the Si out performs the Koup by quite a bit. Now if you go with the SX Luxury which is actually quite close to the Si in features...then you are at the same price point ($26k CAD) in which case it is much better to go and get an Si.
Kias suck and their parts are high. They hold no value. I had a 07 Spectra with 46,000 miles on it and only got between 4 to 5 grand on trade in. The car was in good condition also. Glad I finally got rid of it.

@markhinr Some cars have crappy manuals. I drove my cousins 04 G35 Coupe with the 6 speed and the clutch takeup is horrible and the shifter is notchy. An Audi A4 V6 with the 6 speed was one of the best I drove, smooth clutch and instant take up along with a shifter that I could move with 2 fingers.

Here's what I don't get, the thing makes 173 Hp with a 2.4 . . . so why isn't it a second slower than it should be? A VW golf makes 170 with a 2.5 and it's a full second faster, probably heavier, and not meant to be sporty. . . .
There is NO amount of money that could be poured into a kia and make it better than a civic. Hondas last forever. And like I said, it's torsion beam rear end sucks.

@kim Sorry to hear about your mom's troubles with Hyundai. I have had the exact opposite experience. My Hyundais have been by far the most reliable and inexpensive to own vehicles I have owned. My 2008 Subaru has been one of the more expensive cars to own....oil sending unit failed and almost blew the engine after only 33k miles, for instance. On My Hyundai Elantra I had one problem in the 6 years I owned it, and that was covered under warranty.

@betterdropdatdonk I'll give you that it's main target was younger youth that want something different from the normal Japanese compacts (Civics, Integras, tCs, Evos, etc) and the front lights do look similar. But that new futuristic style of thin head and tail lights I have been seeing on almost all new compact 4-Bangers regardless of the brand. Overall to me (besides the headlights) it doesn't look anything like a Civic. Comeon, Kia has stepped up big time and they deserve some credit.

@kimchislayer It has it over the 1st gen TC, when this review was put out. I can see your point though. I would have never considered owning one, till the Genesis Coupe and Forte Koup came out. Believe me, they've made immense strides since the dark early days. I'd trust them more now than any "American" make. But like I said, I understand your opinion, and your not alone, KIA and Hyundai still have a bit to go in getting it out there that they are not the brands they once were.

@hup53 I agree. there are no american cars that could compete with the koup tC civic or corolla. and its a good thing hyundai kicked up their game with the Koup and Genesis coupe. hopefully it will engourage honda to either release a sportier FWD (like bringing back the integra), and will make toyota release their damn FT-86/FR-S already. we're tired of waiting. and maybe nissan could make another 240sx just for the hell of it. 20k FRs from japan need to come back.

i drive this exact car. it does look like the civic from the front, but the rear end looks sharp as glass. its quick AND has excellent gas mileage. i "race" a lot on the interstate, and the only thing i have lost to is a mercedes. i highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a great all around vehicle

ok let me explain the sloppy manual comment. The throttle is a drive by wire so its much harder to get a feel when starting in 1st gear. I test drove an automatic and manual and the manual is frustrating to say the least. you almost never get a smooth start. If you look at reviews for the car its a common complaint, so its not just my driving so dont hate on me. Also when downshifting you cant engine break, or downshift to slow down, it seems to just increase RPM's and not slow down the car

Don't even bother saying its an Si competitor because it has 173HP. Most of the Regular Civic's competitors have around what the kia has. Mazda 3 S - 167HP, VW Golf - 170HP, Scion tC - 180HP, Ford Focus - 160. After destination, a Forte SX is $20,080. A Regular Civic EX is $21,275. An Si is nearly 23K after destination. @SeadGBosnia The cars are sorted into classes by their PRICE and SIZE, not their HP. There aren't 2 compact car classes that further divide the cars by horsepower. The Forte, Elantra, Civic, Cruze, Mazda 3, Jetta/Golf, and Scion tC are all cross shopped due to the fact they're all similar in price.

@techdude6693 the koup is priced in between a civic ex (around 19k CAD) and an Si (26k CAD) civic and that is exactly what it is...it is better equipped and faster than a civic ex but not as good as an Si. Equipment might be similar to the Si but the Si out performs the Koup by quite a bit. Now if you go with the SX Luxury which is actually quite close to the Si in features...then you are at the same price point ($26k CAD) in which case it is much better to go and get an Si.

Kias suck and their parts are high. They hold no value. I had a 07 Spectra with 46,000 miles on it and only got between 4 to 5 grand on trade in. The car was in good condition also. Glad I finally got rid of it.

@markhinr Some cars have crappy manuals. I drove my cousins 04 G35 Coupe with the 6 speed and the clutch takeup is horrible and the shifter is notchy. An Audi A4 V6 with the 6 speed was one of the best I drove, smooth clutch and instant take up along with a shifter that I could move with 2 fingers.

Here's what I don't get, the thing makes 173 Hp with a 2.4 . . . so why isn't it a second slower than it should be? A VW golf makes 170 with a 2.5 and it's a full second faster, probably heavier, and not meant to be sporty. . . .
