your plates are to far apart depending on your metal some stainless does have iron in it and that is the sludge this will eventualy clear up with use you should use electrolyte like baking soda one t spoon per gallon this will greatly improve the output of the cell and definately put the plates closer togather nice plates though the bigger the better also positioned like they are the bubbles will collect under and between and then instead of water you will have pockets of gas taking the place
