I remember Barney, and not the purple dinosaur we're talking about. He was computer animated nose-shaped character. You might catch a glimpse of him from a North Carolina station.
We were introduced to STAR BLAZERS (Yamato), Ultra Man, Gol-Dar/Sil-var/and the son who turned to a rocket--forgot name, Johnny Sako & Giant Robot, the old 1930's Flash Gordon series...And, I distinctly recall the "premiere" of the STAR WARS's parody, HARDWARE WARES.
I was 9 years old when I met Bob Wilkins at one of those "Sci Fi" conventions--now dubbed WONDER CON--in Oakland back in 1980...I had a Captain Cosmic member card. LOL
Commenting on the 8:00 Movie music: If I remember correctly(I was only 6, please forgive me), the commercial break bumper was in key of E-flat; the background had the same blue tone as the Channel 2 emblem. There was a large white circle splitting into 2(one goes up, other down), looking like those old vinyl records. Then, "The 8 O'Clock Movie" comes at the screen, and as the last note is sounded, the top loop of the 8 clears the screen.
I lived in the Bay Area for just a scant 6 or 7 months of '77, just missing the Blizzard of 77... but I was in NYC in time for the 78 blizzard. Yet, I remember this station ID vividly all these years, and also the puppets heralded on TV2 with that flower and guitar background.
I love these old IDs!

1978 or 79'...I remember Channel 2 at 5pm: CAPTAIN COSMO!
Remember those PSA (Public Service Announcements)?
"I'm proud to be a *whatever the ethnicity-American!"
Or that "acceptance" PSA..."Steve's not only my best friend; he's my partner!"

It's Captain "Cosmic', who was played by the recently departed Bob Wilkins. His wonder robot, 2T2 was a pun for both R2-D2 and KTVU's channel number.

Oh god, Paul Frees' voice gives me goosebumps. And I was born in 1987 so I don't even *remember* this...but it still gives me goosebumps...

Paul Frees died the year before you were born.

Great clip. I was all of one year old when this came out, but I remember the music later being used as KTVU's 8:00 Movie theme. :)
