@AragonKingofmacedon No matter what side won we should never forget what they did and what those soldiers had gon through, not just in battle but everyday life for them. People need to know about what happened to respect the boys and men that whent through it. You should read Co. Aytch by Sam Watkins who tells the war from a soldiers view, it really shows what they went through from the eyes of a foot soldier and is a great book.
The users of this world want us to think that blind obidence is bravery. Glory is not blindly following some cocked hat that uses you badly. Lee knew the South would eventually loose. He thought maby the North would'nt have the bravery for the fight. But, there are strong brave people everywhere. The South could have compromised. But no, the hard asses choose use up their folks lives instead. How do bullies, users and losers get cannonized?
@metalkrush77 No, they should be respected along with every man that fought in the war both North and South for their bravery and what they sacrificed in those bloody battles. Its a shame that kids are tought in school all they fought for is slavery when almost all Confederate soldiers fought for their homes, their family, and many on both sides joined because they were just kids thinking it was going be an adventure not knowing what they got into.
I never understood the "Abe invades his own country" thing. Did those states no leave the Union? And make their own government? So how did he invade his own Nation?
I do absolutely love the line "I'll tell you plain. There are times when you worry me. But when Pickett responds that he has no division has to be the most powerful moment in entire movie.
that is why Pickett took the blame, along with Longstreet, for the debacal at Gettysburg in the eyes of post-war writers who wanted to find scapegoats and excuses for why the South, with it's long proud military tradition, was defeated.
Berenger was great as Longstreet. It is such a shame that Longstreet gets such a bad name in the South. Longstreet was a very honorable, and intelligent man and general. I think Davis was foolish for not putting him in charge of the Army of Tennessee after Gettysburg.
You can blame Lost Cause writers for that. Longstreet is blamed because of a communications breakdown that led to Pickett's men not being in place at the right time, and the South viewed this as a betrayal of Lee, who despite accepting blame for his defeats was seen as blameless. Pickett was blamed for cowardice when he refused to obey Lee's orders to establish a defenisve position, even though his men were decimated Longstreet took even more flack because he and Grant were friends
@snakes3425 Indeed. I'm a Yank and have no sympathies for the Confederates or their cause but I still really admire General Longstreet. Lee was a great leader and motivator but Longstreet was the better military mind.
I don't approve of the Confederate government or their cause, I do however sympathize with the average Confederate Soldier, who simply wanted to protect his home and soldiers on both sides went through the same hell.
@snakes3425 Agreed. I can understand why they fought. It is a shame so many of them were sent to their death when the "cause" did not benefit any of them, but I think any of us would have done the same to defend their homes and land.
@Kravis63 There is an army base just down the road and my house is just fine. The US army is not oppressive. Yes once you are fighting the ideals get lost and everyone fights for the guy nexy to him or the girl back home. I read that there were many causes for the Civil War. The south was being out populated and wanted to retain equal power. Power for commerce (oppressive tarrifs) , rich folks lifestyle (slavery), amongst others.
We must remember this, for it won't last long. For a short time right now, there's a Civil War video up that doesn't bear witness to the back and forth eternal comment arguments over slavery, or a cause, or anything. It won't last though.
I never understood all the ragging on Martin Sheen as being a worse representation of Robert E. Lee than Robert Duvall. I have seen the two, and while I like Duvall to some extent, I like Sheen's portrayal far better as it is a more energetic and vigorous character which the real Lee (then in his fifties) would likely have been at that point in the Civil War.
"Fredericksburg! Fredericksburg!"
The Federal troops took Lee's greatest triumph and made a rallying cry and a defiant Riposte.
I wonder if he knew at that moment that this was the turning point.

No Civil War video can go without someone bringing up race. Enjoy our history and learn from it.

@snakes3425 George Pickett himself had the best reason of all for why his attack failed: "I think the Union army had something to do with it."

When's the last time we ever heard a politician say, "It's my fault." Lee made a mistake, but was man enough to admit it..
