Art Garfunkel is wonderful, and American icon, but after listening to this original version from Jimmie Webb, this is obviously the only way this song should be performed. Perfect, pained, pure to the heart and soul of the song.
Feel the pain and the passion. A Webb original...hard to type through the tears. Jimmy you have lived my greatest passions and can put them down on paper as your music. Bless you and keep you.
Jimmy this is beautiful. No other version comes close to expressing the words that are saturated with your own experience and drenched with your soul...thank you
. . . and the most memorable part of that song. -- Barry Mann wrote "You've lost that loving feeling", credited with most radio plays of any song ever at about 14 million -- Jimmy Webb fans might want to check out "Adios" -- sung by Jimmy Webb himself live, when he was quite young. At this moment it only has about 220 hits on youtube (as of June 8, 2011), but deserves more. While never yet a major hit, it is probably the most erudite song as far as rhyming goes for the entire Pop era. Adios.
Part 1 of 2: Saw Jimmy Webb in concert in April or May 2011 in Dayton, Ohio -- with Paul Williams and Barry Mann. This appears to have been a one of kind event sponsored by Fifth Third Bank. Paul Williams wrote "We've only just begun" and a lot for the Carpenters -- but his best song is "Waking up alone", I think the only song of his that he sang that hits the charts -- way back in 1971 or 1972 -- but it should have been entitled, "You're an Angel" which was the chorus . . . (See Part II)
@gotch09 It was called 'My Christmas Tree' written for The Supremes 'Merry Christmas' LP of that year. He had been writing songs since his mid teens though. He composed 'By the Time I Get to Phoenix' in 1966 and that song was first recorded by Johnny Rivers before Glen Campbell's version. Rivers got Webb to write and arrange for the 5th Dimension which led to the chart success of 'Up Up & Away' and the rest as they say is history.
@gotch09 Yes he is still alive! :) I saw him perform last year at the Center for Arts in Natick, MA. I met him after the show and he signed one of my Art Garfunkel Cds, infact it was the one that has this song on it! He is a very nice man and I am happy I got to meet him!

I've come to realize that I prefer Jimmy Webb singing his own tunes. Especially this one!

What a huge mistake!!
Never listening to Webb's version of this. The voicings, rubato and vocal are wonderfully done.

@gotch09 Jimmy is in his 60's and still going strong. Just released a new duets album called 'Just Across The River'.

This is my favorite Webb song. Art Garfunkel's version is still the best I've heard, but Jimmy does it nicely --
