  • We can use Android instead of costly weather equipments just put in some sensors thats it.. voilà! Thumbs up everyone so that everyone can know the potential of open source! :) :)

  • Amazing!

  • I wish we could access to sensory date that it recorded! it could be very helpful for any one who wants to launch his one and only phone!

  • Why cant things be as peaceful down here as they look up there?

  • so freaking awesome!

  • How high did this go?

  • Kármán line is at 328k feet whereas the United States recognizes civilian, commercial, and military astronauts if they've flown over 50 miles (264k feet).

  • You're totally wrong jmar. The astronaut "line" is 328,000 feet.

  • Well done man. Very nice. :-)

  • Thanks Matt for the post. I have the Intimidator-5 ready again for your next flight. Oh yeah, if you'd like to see a video of a similar flight from earlier this summer, take a look at my video for Intimidator-5, LDRS

  • Oh favorited!

  • I had make a typo. I type males instead of make. Sorry.

  • Congratulations from Brazil. I'm very happy you males this. I think it can change many things in the future. Regards.

  • If NASA gets to do this, then my fears of randomly getting hurt of a falling " greyhound bus" is OVER!

  • Is it normal for rockets to spin so much?

  • Matt, this is some seriously impressive stuff, I had no idea how far along your team had gotten. Congratulations, and thanks for bringing space travel that must closer to Earth!

  • DroidDoes...lol.

  • Why it doesn't look like it reached space (sky always still a bit blue) ?

  • @TiagoTiagoT It only went to ~28,000 feet., Space is upwards of 100,000 feet.

  • @motorbikematt oh, i thought the point of the experiment was to test if the phone+packaging would survive being exposed to space

  • @TiagoTiagoT One step at a time. We expect to get higher and higher as they vehicles mature.

  • @motorbikematt what was the point then? See if it would survive the launch and retrieval vibrations and g-forces?

  • @TiagoTiagoT Among other things, yes. There was a lot more going on with the phone besides taking video ;)

  • @motorbikematt Hate to break your heart, but... Space starts at 360,000 feet.

  • @jmar1371 If you're French. 360k feet is the approximate location of the Kármán line. That said, to be an astronaut in the United States you only need to surpass 264k feet.

Many folks have launched high-attitude balloons that have surpassed 100k feet and have claimed to enter 'space'. Since the United States does not officially define where space starts or stops, I'm not inclined to disagree. Therefore, my heart is not broken and my original statement stands.

  • You guys should get your hand on a few N900

  • Matt, this is so epic cool you have no idea. Actually I'm fairly positive you know exactly how cool it is. :) You are potentially altering the course of satellite technology as a whole, and -that- is quite commendable. Congrats bro.

  • @avenfoto Thanks amigo!! We're working pretty hard to change *everything*!

  • nice, now i know how make a UAV

  • what os the purpose of the launch if it just comes bak down

  • typical Iphone retard-ness

  • Typical I phone retard

  • 3 killstreak: Our UAV is online!

  • Oh god I'll watch this later I just finished eating breakfast and this is making me dizzy XD

  • @oOToMeROo If you can program an iPhone in an OPEN SOURCE way under the philosophy of Massive Participatory Exploration, then I will work to get you a badge to volunteer in our lab.

    Otherwise....

  • @motorbikematt What G did the N1 show upon launch? Only had my n1 a few days and can only get 1.2 G playing around with it.

  • @motorbikematt Just jailbreak it...

  • thumbs up if you feel like puking after watching this

  • @biotoxin21 ur soft

  • @Craigoryi thats what she said

  • ANDROID WILL BE THE FIRST OS THAT IS LANDING ON THE MOON!

  • u shouldve made it not spin

  • @Ioganstone Stay tuned for future launches, we may resolve the spin problem.

  • Why the spinning?

  • @RandomlyRantful Take a peek at the Make:Online Blog link that I've posted in the video's description above.

Check out the photo at the top of the "Red Lightning" flame coming out of the Cesaroni N4100 motor. If you peek closely at the torch, you'll see the exhaust coming out like a tornado. It almost looks like a twisted open papertowel roll.

The vorticity of the exhaust is inducing a spin in the opposite direction.

    Make sense?

  • Cool video !! Im going to throw my Nexus1 as high as I can !! lol just kidding !!

  • @gonepostal2007 Just as long as it has a parachute!

  • Thumbs up if you came from engadget

  • @Warhound360 apparently your the only one

  • @Warhound360 I came from there too!!! We're like brother now!

  • You should've modded the phone so it would have been somewhat vertical [level] on the trip down (w/ the 'chute)... the going up part was cool but a steady shot of the freefall would have been great.

  • @strateg1c Good idea. Next time. This go-round was difficult and very impromptu as it was.

Thing is, as you can tell from the portion of the video under parachute, that the entire tube of the rocket is tumbling along the lines of the parachute. As long as the tube is rocking like that, I am not sure how to do the mod you're describing.

  • @strateg1c simmer down and enjoy the damn video.

  • poor nexus

  • @zepass NexusOne is still alive and happy, ready for launch out of Mojave on August 7th.

  • I'm dizzy now.

  • you should have like made a call with it or somthing cool ?

  • @1XxENGxX1 Haha! I think we DID do something cool ;) But yes, you're right, a phone call would be neat. Thing is, there's not reception out on the Black Rock Playa...this is where Burning Man is held :)

Maybe WiFi though in the future....stay tuned ;)

  • this video made me sick....

  • Since the YouTube limit is 10 mins could you upload that as another video? lol.

  • @digitalimpulse Another video is coming ;)

  • @motorbikematt

    It's 15 minutes now!

  • @motorbikematt

The video length limit, they just increased it to 15 minutes.

  • Sounded interesting but meh.

  • @goombawa That sure took a lot of energy for you to say meh

  • @motorbikematt explain the point please i am lost.

  • @vann200 The point of launching the rocket is to test Android-based smartphone hardware and software in a launch, and eventually a space environment.

Phones are cheap but come with very sophisticated sensors (compass, accelerometers, radios, etc). These sensors are found on satellites but for a high cost. We want to find out if smartphone components can be used to replace satellite parts.

  • Hold on, hold on, give me a minute *spit* ooooh my brain. I'm cool, I'll be alrig....*puke*

  • @motorbikematt "onstrate some open source apps that can permit a Android based smartphone into a satellite controller." hmmm - not sure what that means.

  • @squaaaaash Bad sentence structure, you're right. I fixed it. ;)

  • The second half of this video looks like "Attack of the Parachute!!!!"

  • What was the point of this again?

  • @Phosphorus16 Something really cool. You're an idiot.

  • @Distractinator Thank you.

  • @Phosphorus16 The point of this rocket launch was to demonstrate some open source apps that can convert an Android based smartphone into a satellite controller.

  • You'll have to admit, it's not just the NexusOne with too much spin! ;-)

  • At least we can say Android was first in space over Apple!

  • @wicked4u2c Haha, actually it was too late. An iPod was sent into space about 5 years ago.

  • @johnhmeyer123 Rest assured that an Open Source Android App was developed to record and control data....not just look pretty :)

  • @johnhmeyer123 yeah, but they forgot to switch it on! I remember the story.

  • @wicked4u2c Indeed, There was one other Android G1 balloon launch in February that achieved a much higher altitude by the crew at NoiseBridge with SpaceBridgeAlpha.

  • well, there goes my turkey sandwich...

  • @somejackball Can I have it?

  • I feel sick

  • @bitplane I AM sick. Bwuuuuh.

  • Loved it!

  • It was an awesome flight. I just posted photos of the launch and prep on flickr.
