Never mind if this was a fortune to make/ operate, respect for what it is, an amazing craft that has earned a noble place in history. I think this footage is amazing. Oh by the way I'm not American
Hard to justify having a space vehicle that lands like an airplane. To land like an airplane you take a major penalty with launch and landing safety. Also, cost ended up being 1.5 Billion per flight. That is about 15 Falcon9 manned (105 people) disposable rockets or 15 falcon9 heavy launches which lifts over double the weight of Shuttle.
Doesn't have flaps. It's movable surfaces are referred to as "elevons" seeing as they do the work of both elevators and ailerons. An ogee/delta winged aircraft has no need, and really no use, for flaps.
It might be the "best view of shuttle landing" if it weren't for the stupid banner across the bottom of the screen that obscures a good portion of the image.
@theDudeAbides1100 HA, no. It would have been cheaper, but we would have lost SO much of the capability to haul the cargo we did up to the ISS. The progress ships only bring supplies (food, clothes, etc) to the station, not whole segments to build upon. And, if we went in the Soyuz, we would only get 3 astronauts, and not the 7 we were capable of.
It wasn't "just to show off"... the shuttle could move both cargo tonnage and cargo bulk at levels that the Soviets could only dream of. That's why they were kept for so long in the first place!
Wonderful video, however the news man wouldnt shut up so i could hear what NASA was saying. OMG. When its live sometimes the best reporting is the event itself.
What a majestic spacecraft, loved the contrails extending off the wingtips. What a shame that moron talking ruined it, I'll just have to watch it again in mute.
What a wonderful textbook landing. It really moved me when the longest serving shuttle, Discovery, landed for the last time. And when Atlantis ends their days in a few weeks time, I'm really going to miss them. For what some people call "dated 1980s technology" the shuttle orbiters are proof of the old adage, if something ain't broke, don't fix it.
Obnoxious banner, even more obnoxious anchorman. Did you have to talk the entire time??!! Jerk!

Shuttles are oldschool. They stopped this program to start with the USS Enterprise, which is due soon!

It doesn't have flaps, does it? At what speed does it move along the glide path? At what speed does it land (touches ground with the gear)?
Resemb1ance 1 month ago
@Resemb1ance,
The shuttle did have flaps....I believe touchdown speed is around 215 MPH....by comparison, a commercial airliner lands at about 160 MPH.

1:40 Anchor: "Let's turn up the audio and listen to this for a minute.."
He catches himself 2 seconds later as he's obviously decided that the world would rather hear him warble until the end of the live coverage.

i liked the shuttle, but it would've been way cheaper to go up the way russians do.seems like a lot of money and hours got wasted jsut to showoff.
