Yea I've seen several in comedies, most notably in the comedy series "Gaki no Tsukai." They once had Bob Sapp and Ernesto Hoost as guest participants. Bob Sapp has even done Japanese commercials, in addition to several other athletes. There's a huge appeal for foreign athletes in Japan.
Beyond comedy, sports, and teaching though, good luck finding a job. You'll need to be fluent, otherwise forget it. This is what I've heard from "Unrested" (look him up on YouTube).
nd u kno wuts even funnier? one of the guys in the end in the actual t.v. studio is american. his name is dave spector. he understood every word u were saying hahahaaa
I don't know if you caught this, but after the clip the female hostess says something along the lines of 'Okuni wa-"...For some reason I thought she was saying something along the lines of 'Honorable Cooney." Ha ha ha.
Even though its English - I'm slightly surprised that they didn't censor the profanities (since they managed to translate okay) with it being 9.30 in the morning.
You say it wasn't that funny, but I liked it very much, but there's no denying that they probably cut out the funnier parts.

Oh well, no one really cares here deshou? Besides, I don't think I get that channel. I mean, I saw the F word on a little kids t-shirt at Jusco one time. I mean...really.
They don't censor the f-word because not enough people understand it for it to be offensive. Even for people who do understand it, the word doesn't hold the same power as it would to a person who was raised in an English-speaking culture.
I'm just starting to learn japanese but I think he said he could hear people saying, "oh, it's cold isn't it?"..."what?...oh yes... it is cold."... "do you think it will be cold tomorrow too?"... "oh, yes... I it will be cold tomorrow."
The topic of the morning talk show chat was basically... what do foreign jokes say about Japan... so basically my comedy group is the place to go for that.
The "fuck" and "fucking" should have been translated here as "koraa" or "konoyarou", this is often use to make laugh even on things that aren't that funny in japanese shows or anime, but they didn't translated it here and i'm not sure japanese do understand this 'cause they just can't catch the words even if they understand them, they only understand creepy deformed japanese english accent. How many times did i hear japanese telling me "puri-zu supi-ku suro-ri (please, speak slowly)"
Congrats on being on Tokudane! What did Dave Spektor hafta say about it?
I've heard American curse words in anime, even. I don't think they're ignorant about what it means. Rather, it doesn't mean as much to them - similar to the whole fannies thing you mentioned.
Are you trying to look pretty for us or do you just like wearing a tie?
Yeah... I was wondering what Dave Spektor must have been thinking. As for the ties... when I get around to doing a apartment tour you'll see I have an insanely large collection of them. Over 100... I'm secretly a neck tie otaku.
Kudos, Kuni! (I'm being alliterative there.) I hope you don't decide to substitute the "n" word for the "f" word or change your name to Michael Richards! You the man, man! You so funny longtime! nJoe
When I did a tour for Japanese high school students, I asked them about their impressions about America and Americans, and they said it was very free and things were very big, and I told them I think things in Japan are very stiff and things are small, and they were honestly a bit surprised and went "wow, I never thought of it that way." I mean, we Americans take pride in our freedom and make fun of our size obsession a lot!
It's true I think americans generally have a sense of humor about themselves (UK, Can, NZ & AUS more so). But the most different thing is the amount of self-analyzation. There are SO many Japanese TV shows about "what doest the world think about us" but basically Americans seem not to care so much.
It's interesting, Japanese don't seem to be aware of how they are viewed in the rest of the world, or have some warped idea, from what I see from the talk show hosts' reactions, and from some of my own experiences talking with Japanese here.
thats so true... cuz in this one japanese rap song theres some bad japanese parts that get bleept out but right after the bleep comes the word "muthafucka" unbleepted.
I rarely get heckled since most of my act is me shouting, so Its a little intimidating I think. Japanese NEVER heckle. I did once though perform at a year end party for about 300 drunk australian rugby players and family... that was horrific. Im not joking, I got hit by a salad roll before I even got to the microphone. That was the hardest paycheck I've ever earned.
xD; Laff. That's great. Hey, well it seems thing are going pretty well career wise for you in Japan then :U Which is good! Hope more things like that fall in place for you. xD Keep the movies coming!
I believe you can say english curse words and they dont bleep it out, since to my knowledge, most japanese dont underdtand it anyway therefor are not offended by it. Besides, There's a video of Gakt saying fuck on a japanese tv show. No big deal over there.
No, they don't bleep out foreign curse words. I remember watching 9/11 coverage on TV from Tokyo and they were showing the live direct feed from the scene. I imagine the American networks didn't broadcast the audio. But I was hearing the direct audio from the scene... wow there was some colorful language on Japanese TV that night. But of course no one in the news room here knew what the people on the street were saying so it went out on air.

Well, do remember: The US has some of the most strict censorship laws in the world. Japan, erstwhile, doesn't censor near as much stuff as we do.
Don't you just love our wonderful Puritanical roots in the USA! (Yes, that was sarcastic!)
netsurferx1 3 years ago 9
USA certainly has stricter censorship than European countries in certain areas, but there are certainly lots of countries that go beyond this.
Japan actually has some fairly limiting censorship rules, just not in the areas like cursing and such that we are familiar with.
