why no dog to follow it up? got no problem with huntin, or using primitive methods but surely a good hound to follow up a hit animal is a must as it must be quite rare to knock an animal over stone dead (no pun intended) using ancient methods
@fliegeroh I think hunting often was a group effort in the past, greatly increasing the chances for an encounter. A lot of planning must have increased the chances for success. ...jim
@paleomanjim I know many times American Indians in the west used weapons, probably horses, and group effort to harass herds of bison into stampedes over a cliff. Getting the meat out of the gully was a different matter, I suppose.
@TATEORTOT32 Yep. Just check out our channel by clicking on our username below and you'll find knife hunt videos as well as several other hog hunting videos.
@watertothepeople Unfortunately, I have not had another chance to hunt boar with an atlatl. I live in California and the hunting rules are strict out here. If they allowed atlatls I'd be out hunting right now! The Texas hunting laws are good ones and allow atlatls to be used at least for hogs....
in 10 000 years time, our descendants will record themselves hunting pigs with GUNS and wonder how it could be possible to have so much fun with an antiquated weapons...
I hate tracking boars, If you hit those lil shits in the hearts, You'd be suprised they can truck for a few hundred yards, Hit them in non vitals, they go back to groups and root impossible to track.
@JesusDillinger I agreee, but fairly good accuracy can be had at close range with practice. I feel fairly confident in hitting most game animals at 10 -20 yards or so. The Australian Aborignees seem to have been able to hit kangaroos at much longer distances, those guys are were incredible!
I never realized that the darts are in two sections. Help me understand... Whay is that more practical. I guess that it is more efficient so that you dont have to make so many complete darts? I have some olf graphite golf clubs that I'm coing to convert the shafts to dart shafts i a bit.
@evolesel Yep, that's the idea, instead of the dart breaking, it (hopefully) will fall away. Also, you can quickly adapt different points for different game or even a blunt tip for small game.
I don't know if those clubs are flexible enough. You get the most power when the dart stores some energy on the throw; it'll spring off the atlatl with a nice wiggle in flight before straightening out. Overall it's flying straight, just wiggling on the way. Good luck.
@splatterviz while in jueanu alaska hunting with my brother and some of his tinglit indian friends one was a haida indian but they are related to the tinglit's but we used atlatl but they called them a nugsaq i then found out that atlatl was a aztec word not used way up north, but we did have some luck threw it at a rabbit and nailed a small squrrle well not a complete loss.
I think its cool you try to hunt in the traditional ways but man dont hunt before you know you can hit it right! no use in wounding an animal if you can't kill it and no need in killing an animal if you don't use it...
@corvion6 You can't do that without some amount of practice though. All hunters end up wounding animals at some point or another. Gun hunters especially.
@MrVoiceofreason123 revise your statement. Bow hunters wound more animals than gun hunters by a long shot. Try not talking when, clearly, you have no clue.
Great job man, I would try that, but the hogs in south louisiana are far to weary to get that close to. I had to sit in a tree with my 45-70 at nine'o clock at night.
Sure. It takes a bit of practice but within a few weeks fair accuracy can be achieved. Check out the Paleoplanet forum for more information. They have a whole section dedicated to Atlatl's. Also, check out Paleoaleo's Youtube videos, he shows how to make atlatl's and use them. That is mostly how I learned....jim
@paleomanjim I built 5 darts out of saplings found in the woods behind my house. I wanted to harvest some river cane but appearently the stuff is a protected plant in AL. So not wanting to go to jail I erred on the side of good judgment. I then sawed and filed an atlatl out of a 1X4 piece of lumber. I over did it as I do everything. I inlayed a stone arrow head into the front and carved finger groves in to the handle and stained it. However the important thing is the atlatl actually works!
i do alot of bowhunting, modern and traditional. a good blood dog is a must. save your deer/hog feet in a freezer bag with some blood. train any puppy by dragging the foot and dripping a few drops of blood on the trail. let it eat the foot and praise it heavily when it is successful. start small. keep the dog on a leash always. you will rarely if ever lose an animal again, and the dogs absolutely love it!
@wagouche Sinew backed bows are awesome too, I hunted deer with them many years ago using obsidian tipped arrows, sure was fun! Good luck with yor atlatl hunting, its one heck of a good time!....jim
Too many people post comments and know nothing about the atlatl. Native Americans were hunting and killing both mastodonts and mammoths with the atlatl over 10,000 years ago and still use them to hunt game as of recent.
I just want to know how far away were you because with proper training with an atlatl you should be able to hit a target up to 150 yards away befor you start to lose accuracy
The Hog was around 12 yards or so. I would not attempt any shot much over 25 yards. My darts will travel around 80 to 100 yards max. 150 yards woud be considered a very long shot even with a high powered rifle....jim
Bow hunting is cool too! I have a recuve Yew bow I made 30 years ago and hunted dear with it using stone tipped arrows, lots of fun! Its all good...thanks....jim
You shouldn't have waited so long. had the shot been been accurate the pig should have been down 5 mins. then you could track it, in day light and an fire a finishing shot if neccessary.

@Rainheron reread my post... I never said I wanted to kill one with a cudgel. Manicplea implied that an atlatl hunter might as well club one, I responded by saying that was pretty much impossible to do and survive. I hunt my hogs with a rifle... from a tree stand. Gotta love technology.
@radagash22 Feral pigs devastate the natural environment. They should be cudgeled, atlatled, riddled with arrows, have rocks slung at them, be shot with firearms, speared, dog hunted, knifed, and any other method to eliminate the vermin. Maybe, sure was fun! I'm hoping state laws change to allow atlatl's to be used in most states, just like archery hunting. Only Alaska and a few other states allow atlatl hunting.....jim
Jim you sly rascal, you slipped this one by me! I love it! Now you can see what it was like to be a hunter for a group, the challenge of the shot and the art of trailing game. It doesnt always work out!
Ill guarantee you those memories will last forever. PETA people just dont understand without this type of hunting they wouldnt be here at all. The Atlatl is a very powerful weapon. Ill never forget the first one I threw! AWESOME SPEED!
Steve, I think you're right, I'm still thinking about it, man what a rush! I'm thinking about doing it again, maybe next spring. I knew you'd like this video!....jim
The Atlatl I used for the hog hunt is actually made from a branch of Oleander, a very light wood. My Osage atlatl is similar but has a narrower beam. Both woods work very well....jim
Wow! you only started atlatl throwing 6 mos ago? amazing you are so good. the atlatl LOOKS longer than 24" in the photos...you did a good number on the killing throw. Texas has way too many hogs, and they need to be thinned. Throwing the atlatl really completes the cycle of making points I think. I couldn't help but think of trying to track that hog at night, dressed like they were 6,000 years ago, fiber sandals, loin cloth. think of the rattlers etc. yikes!
Thanks, I mostly just target practice, but hunting hogs is just plain fun! I made my atlatl from a branch of Oleander and it is 31" long. The cholla cactus and spiders were more of a nuisance than the risk of rattlers, I think I bled more than the hog!...jim
If you get a chance, see the DVD called "Spearthrower". He does a test using both modern broadheads and stone points. The stone points penetrated just as deep as the modern heads!....
Jim, this is Daniel I met you at pasadena on fathers day, you let my son David and I shoot your atlatl. I remebred thay you said that you had a hunt in texas, well I just looked up atlatl hunting and there u were having fun. Maybe next time you will collect your hog, yfis dan & dave

Yes, just started throwing 6 months ago. This is my 4th atlatl and is made from a branch of Oleander, but osage is better. Made the darts from river cane (arundo donax) and knapped the point...
Yeah, I was really surprised at how quickly the hogs reacted to both throws. I will compensate for that next time and throw where I think they will be, not where they are at!....
Yes, Shawn had a gun when we went out looking for the hog. I did not! Best place I have found to hunt deer with bows in California is Mt Lowe, its archery only but lots of deer....
That was just awesome!! I wish you could have found your pork, but thats hunting. I am tinkering with flintknapping and working on a longbow to try out soon. Good luck on your future hunts, and keep those videos coming. Your knapping vids have helped me greatly.
Tred Barta, eat your heart out! So what are the rules and regulation for using primitives like this down in TX? I'd like to see you go after something a bit more substantial, like an elk.
Makes throwing easy.
Good luck with hiting anythin smaller than the broad side of a barn.

Yeah, I was really surprised at how quickly the hogs reacted to both throws. I will compensate for that next time and throw where I think they will be, not where they are at!....

Did you ever find the pig? Was that a folsom style point that you shot the pig with?

Hunting in Texas sure seems a great deal easier than hunting in California where game is more limited and pressure is high. Very cool video.
Does the back up guy or the camera man carry a firearm to protect the spear hunter? That looks very dangerous.
