  • is that a 2 cycle? (i feel real supid asking)

  • @christhetromboneguy it is 4 stroke. you can see the part of the valves at the side of the cilynder. that is where the valves are in.

  • its running a little rich.. i have an AR401 that ticks like a clock.(even in the dead of winter- one pull :D) maybe i'll put it on an old reel mower thats in the shed... o_0

  • I had two of these little guy's, and I know where there are a few other's in good shape. O yeah the ones I had that were kick start

  • Nice engine, I rarely see these at the engine shows anymore in my area. Nice to see a running one.

  • Pardon me, I meant Chore Horse.

  • These were the only four-stroke engines Johnson ever made. They were specifically designed to be stationary engines and were primarily used to power washing machines. They did make one generator with this engine called the Chore Boy.

  • That is freakin awesome!

  • i have the exact same engine that a neibor gave to me but i cant get now spark the coil is not cract or nothing it is almost mint i even gapt the points and condensor i get a very week spark can u help me thanks

  • Strip the ignition system to the basics, unhook the wire from the points to the kill switch/condensor and give it a good spin. Turning the flywheel by hand will not produce a good spark.

  • thanks i followd your instruction and now i have a big blue spark thanks so much but now to try to start it it bin sitting more than 10 years but thanks again

  • @jds44 not true; i can start my iron horse AR401 by hand

  • also, if you are game flash the primary winding with a battery. try it both ways. has worked for me before.

  • great vid nice to hear one run I purchesed one and can't get it to though a spark. the coil is all dried up and cracked. where can i find parts?

  • Sometimes there is some parts on EBAY, but the best way is to find a "parts" engine to canabalize

  • wow that is so cool nice to hear one running I purchased one from a flea market and I just can't get any spark. the coil is all cracked and corrosion took over . is there a place you can get parts for these old motors?

  • What is it running on? The fuel in the Jar dosn't look like gasoline. Is it alcohol?

  • What's the advantage of having a slanted cylinder?

  • I am not sure, maybe to get a lower profile? Or they just wanted to be diferent.

  • The slanted cyliner is for a lower profile under the washing machine!

  • its for having a lower center of gravity....this looks similar to a honda 390

  • i got an AX-417 that only needs a gas tank, a new spark plug, and an exhaust system

    (and maybe an oil change)

  • This is so cool!

I have an AR type engine on a Eureka lawn mower, but the air vane governor assembly is missing.

Would it be at all possible for you to send me a picture of the linkage that attaches to the throttle plate? From there I can make a governor, using the parts book picture I have.

    Thank you so much,

    Mike Compston

  • I will see if I can get a good picture of the linkage, It is packed away for the winter.

  • DiD YOU HAVE TO REBUiLD iT

  • I did not have to do much, just set the points, clean the gas tank and carb out and it started first pull. Not too much wear on this one and lots of compression
