god damn. can u tell me if people still use those heavy metal tipped jousting lances like they do in that movie "a knights tale" cuz that shit seems like it would hurt
@19texasraised92 well they haven't used those lances since the 15th century after that lances started to get thinner and thinner but were still made out of Oak, the lances you see here are also made out of Oak or douglas fur
We had one unhorsing at The 2007 BC Renfest. From what I was told (I missed it) his lance hit the ground and he 'flipped' off. But this... WOW! Nice....
Relax. That's what I was told and that's what it looks like on the small vid someone at the fest took. When I got the vid it looked like the horse suddenly stopped, the lance hit the ground and over balanced you. MAkes sense and not as glorified as the original story but hey.. A good story is a good story. I have seen it happen in Ontario (Back in the late 80's)when Medieval Times opened and he wasn't aiming for the ground either.
Flat saddles are required for this joust as per the rules. Historically there were some jousts that also required flat saddles so as to facilitate unhorsings. There are many different styles of jousts that had different rules and different equipment (saddles, armour, lances, targeting etc)
I squired for Ripper in Florida where during a performance he accidently hit me in the face with a lance. I had a black eye for a week & told everyone that "a knight hit me while jousting" but for some reason, nobody believed me & my boyfriend got a lot of dirty looks. I'll never forget Ripper running to me afterwards, dropping to his knees in full armor, taking my hands & saying "M'lady, I'm so sorry. Are you alright?" How many girls can say they had a knight in shinning armor do that? hahaha
When I was the lance catcher for one of the shows, the drawstring in my pants broke. I had to hold them up with one hand, so I was forced to try to catch his lance one-handed. I ended up getting smacked in the face. I woke up a few seconds later on the ground, and my pants had fallen down.
I never get sick and tired of watching this vid. I have had the honor of squiring for Ripper with the Freelancers at Maryland Renaissance Festival and having ridden the horse that he was on here for my first tournament and coming off of him I can only imagine a blow like that. Absolutely amazing and I wish I could've seen it in person but this was before my days with the troupe but I've seen this and many pictures and other vids and you guys are just awesome! Thanks so much for posting this!
Did either of these two people die or become cripples because of this?

Yes, I have also jousted with solid lances with coronels (the steel 3 pronged spikes) on the end.

Hmm, lances made for modern jousting are supposed to shatter in the tip to prevent this from happening. What the hell where they thinking lol?

No being as i am the guy guy who fell off, it was due to a horse shying away not because my lance hit the ground. My target is not the ground.

It amazes me sometimes that they are still alive... with that much armour you have a great amount of momentum...

Ripper is such a tough guy. I had the pleasure of squiring for him for several years

I have a hard time imagining what it would be like to witness two bodies of gen d'armes going at it. That would really be something to see. ^_^
