@chewbaka05 You can stop lower back pain by holding your stomach in and strengthening the stomach muscles to the point that they support your vertabrea. Also specific stretching exercises will help. I recommend advanced pilates training to correct this problem.
Since most people are going to buy it, use it once, then stick it in the corner and never touch it again, maybe they should just get the one that is their favourite colour?

I just recently started my kettlebell training. At first my forearms would bruise too. I found on the snatch punch through hard at the top meeting the kettlebell before it flops eliminates the smack. I love these things and have several friends using them to train. Kettlebells are awesome for gaining real true strength.
That's a result of improper form. Do a search on here or even better get Steve Cotter's Encyclopedia to Kettlebell Lifting vol. 1. Awesome DVD, if you don't wanna buy it just torrent it.
@gledalac1979 What's ur nationality so I can all u names as well u fuck. Did it ever occur to u that a particular make may only be labeled in lbs? If u only need kilos than go on about ur business n get the fuck off of here.
hey I'm still not really sure what size to buy. I'm 16, I'm into gymnastics. I trained 6 nights a week with weights mainly on mass building with a normal bodypart split. Now I am more focused on functional fitness, using mainly my punch bag and handstand moves like planche to handstands, frogstand to handstands to build a sort of full body strength. I back squat 85kg for 8 reps, bench 70kg for 8 reps and am curling 16kgs on each arm. Any idea what I sould get?

i wonder... what are the risks of injury that i should be aware of? it looks like one wrong move and you can dislocate something, or slip a disc or something?
I've been on 40lb dumbells for a while and just started using a 16kilo kettlebell and it's more than enough. Something about them seems to push me with much less weight.
@yubarraboo i think it's cuz the type of exercises is not what you're used to. you've been using dumbbells this whole time so your body has adapted. now it's gotta get used to kettlebells, so it makes sense that less weight pushes you just as hard.
however that operates on modern day fitness conventions, kettle bells need to be swung 100 times, so you need to start very light and slowly build up to the 50 lb ones.
Its possible to do some kettle bell exercises with dumbells, and, I will personally vouch, its a BITCH. The reason it works so fast, is because its murderously difficult.
Its like sprinting with a back pack on your back loaded with lead.
Im a big guy 118Kg, and a bit of a fat bastard at moment but I prefere to do more reps for longer (ie for the Cardio aspect) I tend to stick to the 16Kg but go for 10-15 minutes at a time.
Loads of "heros" at my local gym come swaggering over pick up the biggest they can, swing for 20-30 seconds then put it down and walk away as if they have acheived something.
Love Kettlebells, so under-rated as a training tool
LoL... I've got my first 12kgs kettlebell... This is the size for really active women... ehhh... After a lot of training... I will buy a 16kgs kettlebell ^_^
i just did the essentials with this guy and he knows his shit. he recently suffered some back infection and came up with his own workout to recover. kettelbells are completly different and a nice break from traditional lifting
I'm a 15 year old female, I have trained in olympic weightlifting for about 7 months, I have my first dan (black belt) in shotokan karate (have been training in this for 6 years). I have ordered a 10kg kettlebell, but do you think this will be too light for me? And should my size after this be a 12kg or a 16kg? How do you know when to move up?
@ShotokanKarateRules I'm no expert, although I can only say that the lighter weights in high, fast reps (usually in punch motions) would be better for majority of strength training exercises for karate. I use 4-8kg for this, but I'm not that strong, so 10-12kg sounds good for you for this purpose until that too becomes too light in high, fast reps. Heavier weights are good for any lifts involving the legs (like squats) though. This tip is for martial arts only btw...
@ShotokanKarateRules@ShotokanKarateRules you should go straight to the 16kg. there is not much difference really so you are probably wasting your money by going to the 12kg. i started on a 16kg , my very first one which i was concerned would be too much, a guy i knew talked me into it and he was right. now the 16 feels light. i have gone up in traditional kb weights & went from 16 to 24. i thought i would need a 20 before the 24 but trusted him again and went to the 24 which feels light now.
I have a 10, a 12, a 16 and a 20 now :D 20 feels really heavy at the moment though. I can snatch and clean and press the 10 and the 12, can only clean and press the 16 and can only clean the 20. I'll get there eventually. :P
@ShotokanKarateRules awesome. i can snatch the 16kg but im too scared to attempt the 24kg. i really want to give it a go but need to work up my courage. lol. and the 32kg i have no chance in hell of ever snatching that. i have only seen a couple of girls on youtube snatch a 32kg.
Mix EVERYTHING. But the kettlebell does train your whole body. Though i would say how much you improve isn't really about the tools, it's about you. Use your brains first.
This sounds like a stupid question but how do you know when you need a heavier bell? I don't feel the hurt I used to feel when I would kbell w/ my 15 # bell. I'm thinking of doing parts of my workout with my 25 # bell. What do you guys think?
I started kettlebells when i was 14 (male) and started with a 12kg. I am able to snatch it 100 in a bit over 4 minutes.(15 years old now) I am thinking about getting anther 12kg or should i get two 16kg?
hi im 88kg male workout 4 times a week and want to start on the kettlebells , how heavy and what workouts can i do to increase size and power....cheers davy p
28y/o female, 5ft 2in 115lbs. I exercise 5-6x per week (weights, biking, hiking and stairs). I use 15, 20's and 25lbs DB depending on the exercise and I squat something pathetic like bar+15 on each side. I feel like with the 12kilo I will be able to do a wider range of exercises, but maybe I should go for the 16kilo to get more out of it?
Yeah, 16 kilo should be good for you as far as the basic swing, but you might need a lighter bell(8 or 12 kilo) to help you with certain techniques like the clean, the jerk, and the press(or at least get over the fear of performing these exercises). From my experience, getting quality instruction from certified kettlebell trainers, through DVDs, seminars, private sessions, etc., will help you get more out of kettlebell training than anything else and is absolutely essential.
Depends, You might be able to get lots of reps in swings, cleans and presses out of the 16kg. But you'll want to start lighter for turkish get ups and windmills. It never hurts to have a lighter one just to build technique.
Great video, thanks for the advice. But still not too sure - I'm female, pretty active, but don't want to bulk up, rather tone.... should I go for the 16kg or is this too heavy? Thanks. Sarah
Women cannot "bulk up" unless they are taking hormonal supplements because they lack the required levels of testosterone to build large amounts of muscles. Only steriod taking bodybuilders get big and bulky... hope that helps.
I'm 15, very active in sports and working out. I weigh 75kg, what weight kettlebell should you recommend me? I don't want to spend to much money on a kettlebell which I might outgrow in a month or so.
recommended weight for a beginner is the 16kg, reason being even if its too light for you, you practice and perfect your kb technique which will help you avoid injury with heavier kb's. Seeing as you are short on money I'd go with the kb weight as much as the db you use for military press. That way you know you can press it and snatch it, TGU it etc....however you have to condition your wrist to rest that weight on it, it will feel a bit strange at first.
If the 16kg is heavy start of with exercises such as the swing for your hips and grip, also do figure 8's. Once you feel comfortable with that do figure 8's with a hold, then press the kettlebell with the hand its resting on and help yourself out with the other hand which is holding the handle, keep doing this to eventually progress to normal presses.
Kettlebells kick a lot of ass and are great to work out with, but they're pretty expensive and harder to come by in larger sizes compared to traditional dumbbells, unless you order them. But it's nice to have at least one because they can provide a great workout.
Sorry, but this kind of recommendation is always crap. At BEST it gives an "average." But who is average?
The advice should be how you should FEEL when you use it, how you can or should be able to HANDLE it. THOSE kind of guidelines allow you to figure out the best size yourself.
"The advice should be how you should FEEL when you use it, how you can or should be able to HANDLE it. THOSE kind of guidelines allow you to figure out the best size yourself. "
Thats what he said, "You need to FEEL your body being loaded with ressistance" to tell which kettle bell is right for you..
The rubberized ones rip hair out of my arm sometimes. Also, it gets stuck to the ground because of suction. It's happened a couple times, the bottom thing gets pulled off, they should make ridges that don't allow an air seal. Kettlebells are awesome though!
Thanks for the input. How many times a week can one kettlebell? Can I do it every day or should I do it every other day so the muscles recover. I am a fit pilates nut cutting my teeth on a 15 pound Kbell using Lauren Brooks' DVD. I'm having a blast. It's a kick ass cardio workout, much better than my verticle climber. I will eventually work up to my 25 pound Kbell.
I think it depends on the intensity of your workout, but since in kettlebell training , compound movements are oftenly used, you should stick to the 3 per week workout schedule if you are doing cleans, snatches and stuff. And leave the others days for moderate cardio. Just remember to eat clean and had plenty of water.
no. the only thing that can make you bulk up a lot is the combination of lots of excess food, hard work, and testosterone. if you're missing one of those you will continue to have a girl body.
Thanks, conventional weightlifting makes me huge and it doesn't offer the fat burning cardio benefits that would add the cutwork to the muscles. I took up pilates to lengthen and shape the muscles. It was a big improvement but adding Kbelling to pilates is helping to add more cardio and strength training to my workout program. Even better, my husband and kids are interested in Kbelling.
I might be wrong but I'll give you my understanding of resistance training. you can only either make your muscles bigger or not bigger. you can't shape them. and certain resistance exercises cause more size growth than others. low rep, high weight, explosive movements put you at more risk of injury, but they cause more strength increase and less size growth than less weight, higher rep lifting. and such resistance training also burns calories like cardio does, because your metabolism is...
You cant ever have been stretching. Please learn how your body works before talking a lot of shit.. I can still go down in split, both side and front. I am a former KungFu fighter. Btw, Godbye from me with this/my channel.
...faster for the next 48+ hours, burning more extra calories over this time period than during the actual exercise period. this is why it is important to fuel yourself properly when you exercise, so you do it well and don't make mistakes and hurt yourself, and THEN restrict calories in the days after, which will retard muscle growth because there wont be enough calories to do it. this is my understanding anyway. good luck and have fun, its important to exercise no matter what you do :-)
I had thick, bulky muscles for a long time. I decided to shape up after my childbearing was finished. In less than a year of pilates and cardio, my bulky muscles became long and sinewy. Now, 6 years later, I took up Kbelling to add weight bearing exercises and to make cardio fun. I'm having a blast and can wear clothes that girls half my age can't fit into.
I'm a 29 year old, semi-active male (haven't been to the gym in about 2 months, before that I did weights a couple of times a week). I weigh around 95 kg/210 lbs and am around 6 feet tall.
If I were to give a comparison I usually shoulder press around a 30 kg/66 lbs barbell, bench press around 50 kg/110 lbs and leg press around 80 kg/180 lbs. With these in mind I've been thinking of getting me a 16 kg kettlebell, but I'm not sure if I should rather go for the 20 kg. Advice please?
Im 22, 6'0, slight builld, fitness not great, I was told to start with a 12. It was better for me to start off a bit lighter and just increase the reps once you have a good form. It made more sense that way.
I'm 17, and 5'9. My dad bought me a 30 lb kettlebell, which is only 13.6kg, is this not enough weight? Because It feels pretty damn tough when doing swings, and lifts and whatnot..
Definitely enough for starters. I'm 20, used to do some heavy lifting and i started off with a 8kg bell for the first few times. Now I've moved to a 16kg, which especially with onehanded lifts is still damn though.
Thanks, but let me throw one more question at you. I just started working with the bells, and I'm wondering if it's normal to feel tension in my lowerback. based on my program, i'm just supposed to practice swings and the turkish get ups. the swings are what does it for my back. Is it normal for my lower back to feel a little tension? I'm assuming I'm just working these lower back muscles and that everything's fine. am i right?
Yes, its normal. When you work with kettlebells you should always keep the middlesection of your body tense (remember to keep your back straight and eyes up!).
Yeah...I'll eventually get some 4 pd weights to use at home or whatever but I'd much rather swim or bike ride or even walk! ;) I just can't stand the gym especially when I get tired of watching CNN and ESPN that are always being shown. :)
i started using kettlebells in high school track. and we used 16s. they arent that bad. just make sure your form's good and you'll be fine. i recommend using a mirror to make sure everything's right
Wondering if anyone can give me some advice, I am 35 year old woman who has been boxing for 5 years due to injury haven't trained for four months. I weigh 60kg and quite strong. Can anyone suggest a weight of kettle bell for me to start with?
Most ladies start out with the 26 pound i believe... you might want to try what most men start out at that is if your strong. Your best option would be to try find some kettles in a store, learn how to do a swing and see how it feels for you. I would say 26 or 35 pound to start.
So you're saying that you can't use this information if you want to buy a different brand? All kettlebells are around the same price. They're spendy, but you can do a bunch of different exercises with that one weight. Don't knock it 'til you try it.
I'm 17stone and 5ft 7in. I currently to one exercise class a week. Other thant that I'm not really active. What size would I start with.

I just recently started my kettlebell training. At first my forearms would bruise too. I found on the snatch punch through hard at the top meeting the kettlebell before it flops eliminates the smack. I love these things and have several friends using them to train. Kettlebells are awesome for gaining real true strength.

hey I'm still not really sure what size to buy. Any idea what I sould get?
cheers

I've been on 40lb dumbells for a while and just started using a 16kilo kettlebell and it's more than enough. Something about them seems to push me with much less weight.
yubarraboo 1 year ago
@yubarraboo i think it's cuz the type of exercises is not what you're used to. you've been using dumbbells this whole time so your body has adapted. now it's gotta get used to kettlebells, so it makes sense that less weight pushes you just as hard.
mizzpeekaboo 1 year ago
excellent advice; very rare on youtube.
however that operates on modern day fitness conventions, kettle bells need to be swung 100 times, so you need to start very light and slowly build up to the 50 lb ones.

ShotokanKarateRules 2 years ago
I am about 5 ft 4 and 140 something pounds.
ShotokanKarateRules 2 years ago
@ShotokanKarateRules I'm no expert, although I can only say that the lighter weights in high, fast reps (usually in punch motions) would be better for majority of strength training exercises for karate. I use 4-8kg for this, but I'm not that strong, so 10-12kg sounds good for you for this purpose until that too becomes too light in high, fast reps. Heavier weights are good for any lifts involving the legs (like squats) though. This tip is for martial arts only btw...

@ShotokanKarateRules @ShotokanKarateRules you should go straight to the 16kg. there is not much difference really so you are probably wasting your money by going to the 12kg. i started on a 16kg , my very first one which i was concerned would be too much, a guy i knew talked me into it and he was right. now the 16 feels light. i have gone up in traditional kb weights & went from 16 to 24. i thought i would need a 20 before the 24 but trusted him again and went to the 24 which feels light now.

SakoYo 2 years ago
@Clairebird
Depends, You might be able to get lots of reps in swings, cleans and presses out of the 16kg. But you'll want to start lighter for turkish get ups and windmills. It never hurts to have a lighter one just to build technique.

DavidSlagter 2 years ago
recommended weight for a beginner is the 16kg, reason being even if its too light for you, you practice and perfect your kb technique which will help you avoid injury with heavier kb's. Seeing as you are short on money I'd go with the kb weight as much as the db you use for military press. That way you know you can press it and snatch it, TGU it etc....however you have to condition your wrist to rest that weight on it, it will feel a bit strange at first.
holywaterx 2 years ago
Oke, thanks for the help :)
DavidSlagter 2 years ago
I think a 16kg KB might be too heavy for you to start with. I just bought some and 16kg is damn heavy!!
bacabu30 2 years ago
If the 16kg is heavy start of with exercises such as the swing for your hips and grip, also do figure 8's. Once you feel comfortable with that do figure 8's with a hold, then press the kettlebell with the hand its resting on and help yourself out with the other hand which is holding the handle, keep doing this to eventually progress to normal presses.

Sorry, but this kind of recommendation is always crap. At BEST it gives an "average." But who is average?
The advice should be how you should FEEL when you use it, how you can or should be able to HANDLE it. THOSE kind of guidelines allow you to figure out the best size yourself.

I will eventually work up to my 25 pound Kbell.
biohazzarddiva 2 years ago
I think it depends on the intensity of your workout, but since in kettlebell training , compound movements are oftenly used, you should stick to the 3 per week workout schedule if you are doing cleans, snatches and stuff. And leave the others days for moderate cardio. Just remember to eat clean and had plenty of water.
Keep up the good work!
pakek 2 years ago
no. the only thing that can make you bulk up a lot is the combination of lots of excess food, hard work, and testosterone. if you're missing one of those you will continue to have a girl body.
moneyman10k 2 years ago
Thanks, conventional weightlifting makes me huge and it doesn't offer the fat burning cardio benefits that would add the cutwork to the muscles. I took up pilates to lengthen and shape the muscles. It was a big improvement but adding Kbelling to pilates is helping to add more cardio and strength training to my workout program. Even better, my husband and kids are interested in Kbelling.
biohazzarddiva 2 years ago
I might be wrong but I'll give you my understanding of resistance training. you can only either make your muscles bigger or not bigger. you can't shape them. and certain resistance exercises cause more size growth than others. low rep, high weight, explosive movements put you at more risk of injury, but they cause more strength increase and less size growth than less weight, higher rep lifting. and such resistance training also burns calories like cardio does, because your metabolism is...

T2431 2 years ago
...faster for the next 48+ hours, burning more extra calories over this time period than during the actual exercise period. this is why it is important to fuel yourself properly when you exercise, so you do it well and don't make mistakes and hurt yourself, and THEN restrict calories in the days after, which will retard muscle growth because there wont be enough calories to do it. this is my understanding anyway. good luck and have fun, its important to exercise no matter what you do :-)
moneyman10k 2 years ago
Thanks! Amen on the exercising. Nothing turns up the metabolism or keeps you engaged like Kbelling.

Riggidig 3 years ago
Im 22, 6'0, slight builld, fitness not great, I was told to start with a 12. It was better for me to start off a bit lighter and just increase the reps once you have a good form. It made more sense that way.
sinimini 3 years ago
I'm 17, and 5'9. My dad bought me a 30 lb kettlebell, which is only 13.6kg, is this not enough weight? Because It feels pretty damn tough when doing swings, and lifts and whatnot..
ams914 3 years ago
Definitely enough for starters. I'm 20, used to do some heavy lifting and i started off with a 8kg bell for the first few times. Now I've moved to a 16kg, which especially with onehanded lifts is still damn though.

Thanks, but let me throw one more question at you. I just started working with the bells, and I'm wondering if it's normal to feel tension in my lowerback. based on my program, i'm just supposed to practice swings and the turkish get ups. the swings are what does it for my back. Is it normal for my lower back to feel a little tension? I'm assuming I'm just working these lower back muscles and that everything's fine. am i right?
ams914 3 years ago
Yes, its normal. When you work with kettlebells you should always keep the middlesection of your body tense (remember to keep your back straight and eyes up!).

great, thanks. Now that my back is so tight I can definitely see why kettlebells are good for posture lol.
